Why Halo is called innovative?

It was the first console FPS I played with a Co-op campaign, but I'm not sure if it was the first ever (I think perfect dark had this.) I can't think of a console FPS before it that used vehicles, but again I'm probably wrong (again, I think perfect dark might have had this). The dual joysticks for movement maybe, I'm not sure.

I don't think it was as innovative as just really well rounded.

I suppose Doom and Quake don't exist in your world.

Anyway, the first Halo was innovative because it was pretty much the first console game with online multiplayer that was easy to use and fun to play. It also introduced the "sissy shield" ie. hide in a corner to get all better. I suppose that some find that as an innovative addition as well. Other than that, Halo was your average FPS.

I would say Halo 1 was innovative, it used good 3D graphics, and the setting was a little more then copy-paste here are some bad guys, go shoot them.(I am talking about 1 here. NOT 2-3, they ARE copy pasted)
It was also one of the first FPS games that brought in regenerating health, and various other things. I actually prefer Halo1 to 2 or 3. I liked the health system(Health NOT regenerating, and shields that do. IT MADE SENSE!), the weapons were well balanced, and and the game-play was actually fun.

Well, actually, Halo was one of the first console FPSs that became really popular. That's gotta count for something.
And it was still better for PC!...yet it never caught on very well.

I really did like Halo for PC. It was sort of a brand new type of fps...I guess. I mean, the weapons had all been done before, save for maybe the Covenant pistol. The low(er) gravity parts were fun. Vehicles were semi new for fps. Yeah, I mean, still a great game, but I wouldn't say entirely innovative

If there was this question, report it for deletion. Thanks!

I go over the internet, and people keep talking about Halo being innovative [like in the other Innovative FPS thread]. I think it is worth a seperate thread to talk about it.

Was I the only one who saw the standard "Here's is your weapon, go kill bad guys" scheme? I really don't have a clue why it is innovative!
I'm with you there. Everything in halo was cannibalized from another FPS.

The first Halo didn't have online play, just LAN. Well, at least the xbox version.

Halo 1 had colour other than grey. Halo 2 wasn't innovative. Halo 3 has the forge and theatre mode making it the best game on any console to make machinima.
Halo 2 made a rather popular matchmaking service that has been used in nearly every other console FPS. I suppose you could say it's innovative in that regard. Thats about it really.

WAS innovative. WAS. And that's debatable.

It WAS considered innovative because it was one of the first mainstream console FPS games that didn't absolutely suck. The recharging shield and SF setting probably didn't hurt, either.

To call Halo innovative now?... That would be nuts. It's like calling "Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Whatever 12" (not an actual name, but you get my point) innovative.

As for me, I prefer Black, Urban Chaos and Project Snowblind.
Nobody ever listens when the forge is brought up; show me another console FPS with a system similar to the forge and a theatre mode for making machinima and I will agree that Halo 3 isn't innovative. Until then the naysayers are just riding the anti-halo bandwagon.
This. Exactly this.

The first Halo could certainly be considered an innovative game and if innovative is too strong a term for you then it is undeniable that Halo refined the FPS to a ridiculous degree.

The more open levels, slick aiming and seamless integration of vehicles made Halo:CE a tour de force in the FPS genre when it was released. Its brilliant graphics, (at the time), certainly helped its cause. All these factors made it head and shoulders the best FPS of the last console generation.

Halo 2 brought nothing new to the equation in main game and although it could not be criticised overly for that it certainly didn't innovate in any way. The online multiplayer could be called innovative, (admittedly I never played it), and it was the most played Xbox live game by far. I would personally consider this something of a hollow victory considering online gaming was still developing at this stage in time.

Halo 3 is quite simply one of the least innovative games I have played. So many sequels have been slated for not eveoling enough but Halo 3 somehow got away with just a graphical upgrade. Also, despite the emphasis reviewers put on stories these days, no one seemed to care that this "conclusion to an epic trilogy's" story sucked arse. The campaign was dull in the extreme and offered very little in terms of memorable gameplay moments. You could call the online multiplayer innovative simply because the matchmaking was so effective but overall the game brought nothing new to the FPS genre as a whole. Even the trademark blisteringly good graphics lost out in the current generation.

Overall I would say that Combat Evolved could certainly be considered innovative but the the other games not really. The incredibly slight changes just don't make enough of an impact that the original did.

In very basic summary -

Halo:CE = Yes please

Halo 2 = Hmmm

Halo 3 = Meh

Thing is, the regenerating health actually made sense in the first one, because your health didn't regenerate: your shields did, and health was a separate meter. All other shooters with any kind of regen health took away the separate meters though, including Halos 2 and 3.

I don't believe Halo: 3 was innovative, Halo: 3 was all about the gameplay, its engine was brilliantly done, it was more focused on the multiplayer gameplay aspect, considering everything is sorted out into lobbies. I think innovation in regards to Halo was most likely referring to Halo:CE. Which, in its time, set the bar for modern FPS's to strive for.

Halo Combat evolved introduced the following to the best of my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong, really.

Introduced
Regenerating Health
Limited Weapons Supply
Integrated Use of Vehicles

Personally my favorite thing about the original was how every weapon was useful unlike the weapons scaling of most shooters up until then (Pistol then Shotgun then Machinegun then Rockets you get the idea, usually once you got The Machinegun you never switched to any others until you ran out of ammo)

Halo brought nothing though enemy AI was limited to the room they were in on legendary mode you could easily go through a door gun some enemies run out wait and repeat process over and over weapon realism was a nice throught w/ only 2 weapons carried at once but overall it was mediocore at best and should be buried along w/ E.T down in New Mexico

I think it was the first (or one of the first) FPS games to use regenerative health, and it's partially responsible for bringing the FPS genre to broader public attention.
that one, basically it started the massive trend toward Regenerative health meters, rather than simple health
