Why has there never been an attempted Steampunk game?

Arcanum was a great game with some pretty nifty steampunk stuff. Also it had Gill Bates an obvious parody of bill gates. Seriously though i wasnt a bad RPG....great now i want to play it again

I got to thinking about this the other day. A free roaming, or even linear game with Steampunk as the central theme would be awesome. It lends itself so well because you could have all these zany gameplay elements and gadgets and they'd be totally believable because of the universe they were set in.

Imagine having a huge sprawling Victorian Londonesque city. It could be in it's own "world" so you wouldn't have to bother with our history and stuff. For the main character, let's say you're a private detective. You're hired by some woman to find out why her husband was killed. It all turns out in the end that he worked on some super secret weapons program (all of which would be steam powered, of course.)

You have this enormous city or several cities that you can visit and explore. There could be many ways of getting around, from steam powered car type creations to more wacky things like that steam wheel motorcycle thing in Steamboy. There could be massive trains that work like bullet trains but run on steam, special guns that work on steam (but aren't the pew pew kind, but more a BOOOOOM kind.)

Maybe you could also get around with steam powered gadgets, like some kind of spring heeled shoe (in a reference to Spring Heeled Jack...the legend not the book.) You could have airships with cannons to defend them with if you so chose (or as the story would require.) You could have massive crazy weapons that required tons of manpower and steam, and have puzzles that revolve around levers and valves.

You could have a huge open world with all these things that you could do even though the story wouldn't require it, just for the heck of it. It wouldn't have to be GTA set in a Steampunk world, either...maybe a little more like Skyrim set in a Steampunk world.

It just seems like it'd work so well. Not just because more people are getting into Steampunk now days, but because it could be an original and interesting experience. The world of Steampunk doesn't have to follow the laws of natural technological evolution. Anything you can think of can be made with enough levers, valves, and steam. The game could be a fun "detective" game or at least hold some of that "class" that some Steampunk settings have, with the characters able to be interesting and fun without having to worry about "the real world."

Does anyone agree? Are there any good Steampunk games? Did you actually read this whole thing? Do you have the ability to make games and want to turn this into a real thing? Will our heroes survive? Can Batman outwit...oh. I got carried away.

You ever hear of flash games? Because there has been a pretty good Steampunk game out for a while. Its called Remnants of the Skystone. If you want a AAA steampunk game don't expect that anytime soon it seems like we are in as yahtzee calls it Shooter season.

Arcanum would be your best bet, It's a little old now, but should still be good fun. It's basically Elder Scrolls goes Steampunk.

If there was a way I could credit you as being totally awesome, without just saying "This guy is totally awesome!" I would. Seriously, thanks for those links, I had only heard of the Thief series, and I didn't know it had Steampunk elements in it!

All of these sound pretty interesting and luckily I can play them all on my computer. You have just given me several things to look into. I wonder if Steam (which could be considered ironic) has any of these for sale. Hmm...

You could look into Remnants of Skystone, a sort-of-maybe-Metroidvania-ish flash MMORPG. Very heavily grounded in steampunk. On one hand, there are maybe twelve people still playing it. On the other hand, steam powered jetpacks. I believe that answers any questions that anybody could ever have about anything ever. Give it a look, there isn't even a download involved.

Well, you can get Arcanum and the Syberia series from GOG.com for dirt cheap (re: 6$ US a piece). Hope that helps!

Also, I agree that we need more steampunk games in general. It is a fairly untapped genre right now...

Erm, Bioshock? It may not be strict Victorian London, but pretty much everything is powered by steam gadgetry. In Bioshock2: Minerva's Den they even have a difference engine (computer) run off of steam.

BioShock is dieselpunk my friend; WW2-era tech taken to extremes topped off with a delightful Art Deco aesthetic. Way more advanced than Steampunk and with a different mindset to boot, a lot more dystopian than optimistic.

BioShock Infinite comes closer though.

OT, This probably isn't what you had in mind but Metroid Prime 3 has a huge area in it called Skytown which is a giant floating steampunk city. There are enemies called Steambots and Steamlords and other robots and knickknacks that are steam powered for some reason. It has a very nice art style to it.

Rise of Legends comes to mind... although I wasn't all that fond of it myself, it did have a very good steampunk-themed faction - or maybe it was clockpunk, come to think of it.

The only games that I've played that can be vaguely called steampunk are BioShock 1 & 2, and Fable 2 & 3.

More on topic, I guess that'd be cool. I've been interested in steampunk for a time.
