Why has there never been an attempted Steampunk game?

Torchlight - Steampunk Diablo

Septerra Core - Legacy of the Creator (Steampunk RPG)

(Both for PC, but I think TL is available on XBLA...)
Septerra Core is REALLY not steampunk.... maybe cyberpunk

Thief is a mixture of fantasy and steampunk and one of the best games ever made. Not kidding, it's awesome. It quite literally invented the stealth genre and the first 2 games are amazing, the 3rd game is pretty good.

Arcanum is also pretty nice, very open and complex RPG for it's day, but unfortunately flawed.

I think some of the Final Fantasy games are steampunk (don't ask me what games exactly)

Syberia is a pretty well known and well received steampunk adventure game

You should try Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's a massive steampunk RPG from 2001. Think Baldur's Gate or Fallout in a steampunk/fantasy setting. I'm not sure where you can get it these days though. I kinda hate myself for losing the play disk, it's a really great game.
Arcanum has apparently been reprinted, and adjusted to work on modern computers. I recently bought a new, sealed copy from a perfectly ordinary game store, and got it working just fine.

It should be readily available from Amazon, or your favourite game outlet!

Thief and Arcanum are classic steampunk games. Don't forget the upcoming Dishonored, too.

O_O
I WANT THAT GAME NAO!
That seems like it might be really fun.
Why can't it be released sooner?

They have attempted them.

Rise of Legends comes to mind... although I wasn't all that fond of it myself, it did have a very good steampunk-themed faction - or maybe it was clockpunk, come to think of it.
I was about to say that but you ninja'd me, but yeah the Vinci were both clockwork and steam-powered (the robots ran on clockwork, the bigger mechsuits and siege weapons on steam).

Erm, Bioshock? It may not be strict Victorian London, but pretty much everything is powered by steam gadgetry.
If im not mistaken the appropriate punkism for bioshock is Dieselpunk, heavy reliance on gas powered internal combustion. Sort of what you see in fallout 3 as well.

Bioshock infinite now that might be late victorian era, and might hold some elements of steam punk

Though I feel Final Fantasy 3 (snes) is in essence a steam punk oriented game. Perhaps the reason why we dont see more is because people are still trying to wrap their heads around steam punk and its not really been able to hit mainstream successfully, though they are trying and the more main stream acceptance it gains means the the sooner well see it infiltrate games. Its just they have yet to pull it off well.

Yep. Take for example SSI's Spelljammer. Pirate ships in space, can't get more steampunk than that, and it's an extremely appealing concept. The game itself is garbage.

I don't know how good it is but Damnation was steampunk orientated from what I remember of the trailers etc.

Well, it's a fairly niche genre, especially when compared to space marines and USA vs Terrorists/Russia.

Bioshock Infinite does look a little steampunk-ish, although it's more early 1900s than Victorian era.
The Edwardian Era and the Old West are both applicable for Steampunk. It's just that the Victorian Era is where most of the genre falls.

For example: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is Edwardian Steampunk, while the film version of Wild Wild West is Western Steampunk.

Wow, ya'll have really given me some stuff to look at. I'm gonna check out Arcanum as it's been posted by just about everyone, and also Resonance of Fate (which I've been wanting to play since I saw (I think) Unskippable do it...or maybe it was some other show...but still, I'm a JRPG fan so I'd like to play it.

I'll check out Arcanum on GOG whenever I get some extra cash. Sounds like alot of fun! That'll be one my next comp games!

Specifically Arcanum should be paid attention to if I may add.
As much as I love Thief, Arcanum is the best Steampunk experience you can get in my opinion.
GoG.com has it (because I doubt you will find a cheap original copy anywhere).

And, in case you were wondering, Arcanum was made by many of the developers that brought us the original Fallout 1+2.
Have fun if you are going to pick it up, its a really unique game.
