Why Have 4 Player Co-op Games Been Disappearing?

The wider usage of big-screen TVs kind of allows for more split screens, but you obviously don't want to assume everyone has one. I'd agree it's probably mostly just developer greed for more copies of the game.

Microsoft wants to push xbox live and prevent people from not buying another console and another copy of the game.

Same reason why there aren't any games with bots. Name 2 games that have multiplayer bots on the 360?
Gears Of War 2 and Unreal Tournament 3, I think.
But I think they are the only two. Yeah, the question may not have needed to be answered but I thought I would do so anyway.

OT: I think it may be the push to get us all online. Either that or the graphics would be too much for 4 player co-op to handle.
Gears of War 2 doesn't count. At least if you're talking about horde. Those are in game special bad guys. In other words, they're not replacements of human players. You can't have say..... one human-player/4 human-bots against 3 locust-bots/2locust-players.
Yes you can. In private and local matches, you can replace humans with bots.

I think they're thinking that having 4 people would make it too easy. I mean when your offline you can also look at your friends screen to make sure they don't die but if your online you have to listen to what they have to say and guess. Also having the 2 player feature might actually make it smoother due to the fact that its hard to do stuff when there are 3 people in the way.

Well it seems like these games were most common back before HDTV. But I think the money grubbing is a good possibility.

What, you mean like Left 4 Dead and Borderlands?
No, this is exactly what my problem is. I'm talking about games where you can have 4 players located in one room, with one television, on one xbox, playing through a campaign at the same time.

Lets just face it: these consoles are just too sophisticated for their own good.
So we must dumb them down to make them more enjoyable?
yeah, why do you think I'm playing my PS2 and GC more than my 360 or PS3?

these games are getting too focused on the technical aspect that they are forgetting the "fun" part of playing GAMES.

I think the best example is Prince of Persia. If you don't know, watch Yahtzee's vid about POP2008.

personally, I don't care if a game runs at full 1080p (I think the next one is 1640p) at 120 hertz. I don't care about how "visually stunning" or "realistic" a game is. I want my games to be fun. if the game is only going to let 2 people play at a time, unless you have more than 1 console even though the console can support up to 4 players makes it less fun and more of a chore.

Holy shit! You can? I've owned that game for like... a year or something, and i play online all the friggin time. I did not know that. lol. Well hurrah for EPIC games. They're the only company that creates in-game bots.

I imagine it is incredibly difficult to create a campaign that plays well both with one player character and four player characters. While it can be done of a lot of focus is being done it (l4d) it isn't something most games will do. Also, most games don't really need it, sure it would be nice but the average person likely wouldn't use it enough to play it. The average set up is a decent campaign with 2player co-op and a large multiplayer side, 4 player co-op is mostly a novelty for these games. The only other way would be if a game went full campaign or full multiplayer. Most games that are solely campaign likely can't fit 4 players in the genre and multiplayer games are dependent on the game mechanics.

As the xbox melts itself half the time, you really don't want to be putting more strain on it. It would be nice, but the experience from the games would be a little diminished for the console to not die because of it. On a PS3, i'm sure it's more possible, if not easy... but not many have a ps3 and theres not that many games out for the thing.

Because they're way more enjoyable.I would personally like to play a 24 hour marathon of Time Splitter with 3 other people then some random game that isn't as fun but has way better graphics.

So if we boycott all co-op games that don´t feature 4 player offline co-op,we might get it again?
no. boycotts don't work in this situation. just look at the short lived MW2 boycott(i saw it some where.) or the disasterous L4D2 boycott. it just doesn't work to well.

Those were boycott's on specific games.I´m talking about boycotting every game that claims to be a co-op.No exceptions.

Well, Halo 3 kinda has a 4-player split screen co-opish online multiplayer mode. I love that feature.
he's talking about offline co-op.

OT:

Yeah, I've noticed this and it does sorta piss me off sometimes. I just don't really get why it can do splitscreen with two people, and the map can obviously handle 4 cause it can online, but they won't let me play with four

The MW2 PC boycott was one of the biggest fuck ups ever.

I know. But you can still play 4 player split screen online play. Like Team Death match.

YES, for god's sake, YES.

I too have had a problem with this, me and my friends usually end up playing halo because that's the only game that we own that is 4 player co-op online and atleast 2 player offline. I wish, oh I wish that ALL games offered 4 player co-op online and off, even if you don't enjoy it, game developers should at least give people a choice in whether they play with friends or not.

You could consider Rock band or Guitar Hero if you have the firends, money and storage room to spare.

If you want shooters I'd say go for what takes your fancy of what previous posts have said.

Or just hook up the good old N64 and Goldeneye
