So basically they're selling the collector's edition at launch...I'm less angry and more confused. Aw the Hell with it, I was going to buy the Collector's edition anyway, no skin off of my back. He'll probably be like Legion, he'll just walk around and nobody will look twice at him, maybe a couple of extra lines of dialogue and that'll be it. The only unique dialogue will probably be squad banter and Shepard talking to him directly, so yeah, not losing sleep over this.

However, if I could offer a request, please take the time to send a formal e-mail to BioWare, explaining your actions and your concerns...

...As consumers, we can stop this, but we need to tell them. Silent objections will gain us nothing, so let's make like TotalBiscuit and object, and tell as many people as we can.
Already done and I appreciate your support.

Usually I (as my profile says) just observe I've been coming to this site since 2007 I only made a profile last year and don't often make posts unless the mood takes me, but this kind of thing just infuriates me and I can't stand it. I also realise that I can't change the world by myself It isn't right that were paying for a game that in all essence isn't finished, and this isn't even because they ran out of time/money like with kotor 2 where the game is rushed this is flat out theft. I wanted to pay for a game that had all of the content available on day 1 only to find out that basicly probably the most important side character was going to cost even more. At this point it not even about the money I was already undecided about whether or not to cancel it and buy the Delux edition its the entire ethic I want company's to sell me a game not half a jigsaw!!!
Take heart. EA has proven in the past that, if a policy stands to lose them money, they will change it. TB pointed this out with the controversy over Battlefield 3. If other gamers, like you, act on their beliefs, we will make a difference. One person might not be able to sway the opinion of a giant like EA and BioWare, but 1,000, 5,000, or 10,000 "one" persons can.

I'm sorry were you expecting him to write a thesis paper over why he wanted to buy a bloody video game?

No shit. I don't mind that, but this move is effectively holding content to ransom.

Why are we assuming the Protean is going to be a huge importance to the game?
Because he's a Prothean, plain and simple. Without the Protheans we'd effectively have no Mass Effect games.
I would like to address your points.

1.- we wont know if they are holding content for ransom until the game is releases, Zaeed was not a plot centric character even though he was integral to the Blue Suns, who are major antagonists in ME2

2.- That is a poor logical conclusion to reach, just because Shepard is human it doesnt make every other human as important.

No but in the context of the thread's topic, one would expect something more than, "I plan on buying this video game because-blank. Its less demanding a thesis and why he chooses to buy the game in the context of this topic's discussion.

On topic, I ordered the collector's edition from the start so it isn't a huge deal for me personally. I don't like the precedent though, I don't mind if they do it for new copies, but something like that for the collector's edition does kinda reek of bullshit.

I would think that it was made clear that it didn't bug him and frankly does he really need to say anything else? Saying that he is still going to buy the game, flat out says "this doesn't bug me enough to make me not buy it" otherwise he wouldn't buy it.

P.S. same here, except I really don't care that much.

In a thread dedicated to the reasoning behind the rationale behind one's purchase? Yes.

1) Zaeed was free with any new copy of the game.

2) If Shepard was the last human alive in the galaxy s/he'd be important by default. If Shepard was the last member alive of a species that basically enabled the events of this entire game series? Moreso.

I've not just played through the first Mass Effect and have started the second just to not get the third.
I just won't get the DLC unless I feel like my game is missing something.

So you were expecting him to write a college paper over why he wanted to buy a game...am I the only one who thinks that this website is way too freaking dramatic?

I already bought the collectors edition, but I can see how this must be frustrating to people who didn't buy the CE. I mean, they are basically holding content hostage. And a PROTHEAN?!? That sounds like a pretty big fucking deal.

um guys, were going about this all wrong. why are we boycotting the game? we should instead boycott the DLC! i don't care if its a fucking prothean who knows everything important about everything in the lore, i don't care if the DLC is better than the game itself (haahhahahah no), and i don't care whether or not they make it free afterwards, we need to show EA that this is unacceptable (and for anyone who is trying to pin the blame on bioware, they probably wanted to oppose it with all there might, but we all know what happens to studios that get in the way of EA's paws). if we do that, and don't boycott the game but attack the problems source, then we might be able to stop this before it becomes a regular thing. why make bioware collateral damage when we can show EA what we really think.

Gamers? Boycott? Too bad some are going to pirate it and call that boycotting. There's an enraged TotalBiscuit venting on youtube, but still gamers in general have always been disorganised as a group...

can we just rename bioware Liberal Democrats?

i mean seriously this kind of thing is making disgusted as a consumer and a Mass Effect fan. i know il probably be banned or suspended for saying this, but IF i was going for the pc version i would actually pirate it, but as im going for the xbox (to import my saves) i cant. Bioware has really phoned it in imo, so not only am i not getting a game which really is not up to their standard (based on what ive played, seen, heard and general trend in their games) and now they are cutting out a very important piece of content... im now serious one more bit of bad news about this game (one tinsy bit) and im not buying

No I'm with you there.

OT: this is one of the few collectors editions that makes it worth while buying, they normally just come with a weapon or a skin for shepard or something. They probably developed this character BECAUSE they planned on a collectors edition, so you wouldn't have the chance of getting your precious prothean if it weren't for the collectors edition in the first place. People that pay that extra bit of money will probably want something cool in their game, and they will get it. This will probably not change much to do with the game, other than adding 1 more loyalty mission in, it's not like they'll hide any of the plot from you because of it.

This isn't hiding part of the original game from you like in dragon age, this is giving the collectors edition some meaning for once.

I loved Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2 but after watching this video I have cancelled my pre-order
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri0vrJ-y2zM&context=C39179a6ADOEgsToPDskJl3lWj020_lrFLeeTgWUh4

This kind of thing just goes too far and is the king of money grabbing nonsense I just can't stand. All I ask is that you watch the video and consider the implications.

Edit: The video in short explains that bioware and ea are forcing you to pay for a game changing character those of you who who have played mass effect will realise the significance of this kind of Team-mate.
It is a Prothean
The content is only avalible for those who are willing to fork out for the collectors edition or pay extra for day of release DLC
While I can understand your frustration with all of this, I have to say that I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective, as are a great number of people.

Indeed, there are a lot of exclusive DLC codes that come with the action figures and art books and collector's edition and everything else. But here's the thing: they're not selling you the codes and giving you an action figure/art book/collector's edition, they're selling you one of the previously mentioned items and, as a bonus, giving you a code. Does it sweeten the deal? Indeed it does...but the DLC codes are not the entire selling point. People that buy such things are super-fans of the series. People that actually want to collect the action figures etc etc. They're buying those items because they want the items. If they get a DLC code with it, kick ass. But that's not why they're buying them. I dare say that anyone who buys those items specifically for the DLC codes quite frankly deserves to be ripped off because they're a frickin' moron.

So you can look at it as them wanting to milk more money from the game by having people buy the collector's edition or pay to download the character. Or you can look at it as them rewarding the fans that are loyal enough to be interested in all the other stuff that comes with the collector's edition by adding a free character to that pile of extra stuff while also offering other people the chance to download that character if they really want to.

I've heard rumors that the DLC is just to make the prothean a squad mate and that he regularly appears in the game regardless. I really have no idea if that holds any weight, but if it does, I don't need him as a squad mate
