Why I bought Sim City

So basically, I needed a new game to launch a brand spanking new video series on youtube. Anyone interested can hit me up via PM

However, I remember playing Sim City 2,000 and Sim City 4 for many, many, many hours as a kid. SC2k and SC4 are arguably two of my favourite games of all time and i will remember them fondly.

YES I KNOW THE TEACHERS ARE ON STRIKE, WILL YOU SHUT UP A MINUTE, ADVISER?

*ahem* sorry.

Anyway, for years I've railed against EA's gross stupidity in their handling of game launches and general idiocy, and now I feel is the time to give them a second chance at getting me as a customer. I haven't actually bought anything of theirs since Dragon Age 2 came out, and don't intend on getting anything else from them for quite a while.

So! Sim City (the fifth) will be EA's last chance to redeem themselves. Given that Maxis has been the one in charge of decision making (let's run all serious computation on OUR end! GREAT IDEA STEVE!) etc, and are rapidly replacing servers and getting fresh hamster wheels, I'm confident that they won't dissapoint me.

Again -_-

So, what do you think? Am I in fact an idiot for this purchase?

Only time will tell.
You'll get no judgements from me, however given how bad this whole shindig has been perceived, I'd say there are probably safer bets for giving EA another chance.

I'll I can say is I hope it works for you and hope you enjoy it!

Yeah I've done a lot of yelling at EA over the years, hopefully they've improved. Slightly.

This is an odd game to choose for EA to redeem themselves. This is actually the only time I have seen EA basically apologize for the state of there product, instead of playing dumb and justifying it as per Dead Space or Dragon Age. This seems like trying to hop a moving train that is in the process of detailing to give that rail line another chance to impress you. Not to say running into disappointment is inevitable, but the odds aren't in favor of redemption.

Considering their track records I say have low expectations so you won't disappointed if it's a flop but you'll be pleasantly surprised if it isn't.

Granted they're fixing everything up but when they need to bribe the current players with a free game to stay on their good side, it's clear they're getting kinda desperate...

Ok your analogy sailed right over my head after the third verb.

I wanted to get Simcity...

Then I reminded myself that I'd have to use Origin...

And to use Origin I'd have to waive my right to sue EA...

Then I saw how it was always online...

Yeah sorry I really don't think I'm going to be buying EA games ever again. I seriously can't think of the last game I bought from EA either.

Why would you be suing EA?

Something tells me you will never be buying another EA game again.

I haven't caught T4S's work since the end of the first season of DBZ abridged. I see they're still as awesome as ever.

OT: I think this was a bad game to choose if you were hoping that EA had redeemed themselves, OP. The latest Sim City is evidence of just how far they've fallen in their crusade to punish paying customers for what pirates have done.

I would have waited three weeks minimum before purchasing the game.

By then the server issues would have (hopefully) sorted themselves out and by then the first DLC packs would be available, enabling you to see if they've cut any content to sell to you later on.

I would have to agree with some of the other posters here, you chose one of the worst games to give EA a second chance with. The Always Online DRM system was doomed to collapse under the weight of players, I mean Diablo 3 did something similar and Blizzard at least had some experience with launch overloads with its WOW franchise.

Me, I bought it because it was half price and looked like fun. And as I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive (will probably take 2 more weeks for some reason) I've got more immediate problems with it and I hope most of the server crisis will be solved by the time I finally get it. I still have faith that they eventually will fix the problems. Always online isn't really a problem for me, even if the necessity escapes me. In the mean time: Tomb Raider!

No. But you should have waited until all the issues have been fixed. Buying it while it's broken doesn't encourage the publishers to change the way they go about their business. And EA definitely needs to change how they do business. Which means that it's up to us to provide them with the incentive to do so. And the best way is to ignore their products until they reach an epiphany.

Well it's working perfectly now.

Also I'm streaming it here. Mod edit: Please do not link streaming sites on the Escapist! Thanks.

As you can see (hopefully), it's all fine.

Simcity 2013 is an excellent game. Truly a worthy successor to previous simcity games. Vibrant, intuitive and innovative. It's missing a few things like subway systems and elevated rails, but it brings so much more to the table, like street cars, mining, production and the global markets. I'm sure we can expect to see things we are missing in the future through DLC or patches.

Allot of EA hate has been thrown where it is not due with regards to this game. The constant complaints about day 1 DLC are completely unfounded, seeing as these are cosmetic changes only, with no effects on the game.

However, the DRM disaster has resounded through the whole industry with its failure of epic proportions. When it's FINALLY fixed (eventually) the EA hate machine will have a hard time rationally justifying their bile.

Sorry that is "derailing", not "detailing." Used my phone on break and it changed it.

It's working better now. Hardly perfectly. The servers still go down during prime time, often for several hours, including the brand new ones. And cities are still getting corrupted by the roll back with frequency, leading to either the individual cities or on some occasions the entire region being rendered unrecoverable. And there are numerous AI and system bugs that need addressing. And most of the online/region features are still turned off, and the ones that aren't turned off sync erratically. And Cheetah speed hasn't been re-enabled.

But yes, aside from that, it is "working perfectly". I played for a few hours yesterday and had fun, until the servers puked out.

Couldn't you wait till EA released another without the DRM? The whole point of the current uproar is because of this move they made and how it didn't work straight away. And I'm sure some people will still have problems with it in future. So no, bad Resonance, bad.

Why would you say that? They don't know who you are, nor do they care if they disappoint you. You gave them money...all you are is $$$ to them. Your opinion will never be heard.

Not at all. Sounds like you liked the series, so you bought this one. I think that is a lot smarter than just listening to some guy with a youtube account saying the game is bad, which a lot of people do now days (and they call us sheep).
