Let me know how it turns out.

I'm really on the fence on this one.
I love Simcity, I don't care about the Always Online as soon as it gets fixed. (and I'm sure it will)

It's just that because of all the problems, I have yet to see a proper review of the actual gameplay.
(probably because even the reviewers can't play it)

Well if you can deal with the online DRM, are okay with having the servers shut down in the future at some point and are willing to play the game broken while EA fix all the problems (if they do fix them all that is) then sure go for it. The actual game itself is pretty good, most of the complaints are aimed at the DRM and the city sizes (which EA said they'll update). So yeah, not an idiot in my books.

Cox'n Crendor made me do it! They made it look so damn fun.

And now that i can play the game consistantly. It is fun.

Also $20 off plus the 30% off Dead Space franchise, I got Dead Space 3 for $23 :D

Yeah I've done a lot of yelling at EA over the years, hopefully they've improved. Slightly.
I would suggest all your "yelling" (whatever that means) is negated by actions. By buying SimCity now your essentially saying I don't care about any of the myriad of issues that cropped up since launch. Which is perfectly reasonable because probably in a week or so those issues should disappear, assuming EA didn't release a game that is fundamentally crippled. Idiocy is buying the game right now and being upset at the issues. Normalcy is not being the game and being pissed off at the issues, or buying the game and not caring about the issues. You can't support poor consumer practices and complain about them simultaneously.

I too bought SimCity, and am enjoying it when I am able to play. Quite addictive.
The always-online doesn't bother me too much. I try to remain positive and see the occasional disconnections as forced breaks, I guess.

I really wish the city size was bigger though. And terraforming. And many other features which will most likely be released as microtransactions/dlc, such as subways.
I don't mind paying extra for substantial content, but previous Maxis titles suggest to me that it will be mostly small pieces at "low prices" which will add up fast.

It might be worthwhile to check out Civitas on Kickstarter. Though there is no gameplay footage yet, the ideas behind the game seem to align with what everyone hoped SimCity would be.
Here's hoping.

However, the DRM disaster has resounded through the whole industry with its failure of epic proportions. When it's FINALLY fixed (eventually) the EA hate machine will have a hard time rationally justifying their bile.
Uh huh. Until their next disaster. It's EA. Disasters are kind of their thing in case you haven't heard.

Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Dead Space 3, killing off studios if they don't meet unrealistic expectations, games that don't work on launch day etc. Almost every major release in the past several years had created some sort of controversy. I think only Battlefield 3 was lucky enough not to create a complete shitstorm. Even though I chose not to get it because it doesn't have an in-game server browser.

Well I guess there is more hope if Maxis are fairly involved in the game still, it wouldn't surprise me if EA just ripped the game out of their hands and told them to go away and let them reel in the money.

I hope your gaming and youtube series goes well!

They have games from 95 with servers still working, I don't see why sim city would be dropped in two years.

I wanted to get Simcity...

Then I reminded myself that I'd have to use Origin...

Then I saw how it was always online...
This is how I felt. The always online requirement was actually less of a kick in my pants than the origin requirement. The anti steam crowd loves to say its basically the same, but I have way too many passwords, logins, and secret codewords to remember that I'm actively trying to stop signing up for new services.

I'm rather sad about sim city. Perhaps in some months time, when the city sizes are increased and the hubbub dies down, I might pick it up at a discount. Not now.

So, what do you think? Am I in fact an idiot for this purchase?
This kids is what we call a loaded question!

If we say no we are lying, if we say yes the mods get on our asses! :p
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who saw that.
At this stage, SimCity has shown its hand, flaws and all.
If it still appeals to you at this stage, well, I won't pretend to understand. You have been warned.
