Why I do not like MGS5 phantom pain

There are some things that can be bashed around but most of what you said is just wrong, and it doesnt take a fan to see that you are bullshiting your way through the post.

I was only very recently introduced to the series; I have only gotten through MGS 1 and half of 2 and even I can see it too, yeah. I wouldn't say he's bullshitting since he seems to actually believe what he says, but he certainly is doing something wrong to get so many things factually wrong about the game that you can check against already uploaded Let's Plays let alone the hours worth of videos shown by marketing to hype up the game.

Seriously OP a lot of the people responding to you are right and again I'm completely new to the series so it's not like I'm some diehard fanboy who sees no wrong. Some of the things you are describing literally never happen, don't work that way, etc. in the hours and hours of videos I've watched and things I've heard from friends playing the game (since I'm behind in the series I'm not playing it and even if I could I don't have a platform that could run it).

I will attempt to describe what's going on in ways others haven't already though since you really seem to believe this is how the game is:
Maybe from a certain point of view you can interpret SOME of the things that way as misleading as that would be. Maybe you haven't adapted to the game well enough and the way you play is giving a skewed perspective or causing the game to act in ways it normally would not. Maybe you needed to build up by playing the rest of the games in the series because it otherwise has TOO steep of a learning curve? Have you played the other games? I know, that last one is a bit of a stretch; I heard you can pick this game up as your first just fine if story and lore really don't matter to you. You might be thinking certain things happen because you are missing out on the other details that prove otherwise. After all, it's a big game and I imagine it's easy to miss other things going on when you're too focused on one aspect of what's going on. Otherwise...

You DO point out some legit criticisms, to be fair, like others have said but a lot of your post makes no sense and I don't even have to have physically played the game to tell you that. Something is wrong when I can tell you that from only having seen a lot of videos and getting limited info from friends.

OP, a good number of things you're saying are just flat-out incorrect, but I dunno if I really want to bother to address them. MGSV is certainly not a flawless game, but you're looking for ones that aren't there or presenting bad information.

I was happy seeing no one responding to this garbage this morning and hoping it would just fade away. It's obvious bait because the game doesn't work the ways the OP is complaining about.

You can't dismiss every post like this as bait and trolling. If I made a post like this and was completely honest I'd feel pretty disrespected to be accused of that. He really seems to believe what he is saying. Look at his follow-up posts. If this is all one big ruse then he's WAY too dedicated to messing with people because it's lost all appeal at this point and requires too much work to maintain.

It's still the same game. The AI and the way weapons work isn't a matter of opinion or the system that you play on.

It's even harder to take your post seriously after having said that...sorry, I mean that in the least rude way possible. I mean, if this game was on handhelds and you owned it on a handheld I could understand why you might be experiencing a modified version of the game. But, characteristics like that SHOULD be consistent among the "big" platforms especially those characteristics that aren't subjective enough to be up to opinion, which is really a lot of your post.

I'm also rather underwhelmed by the game and I had really high hopes for it.

No long cutscenes is a huge let down for me. I can understand why they may have wanted to cut them down a bit, but now there are almost none at all. I've heard there were some crazy people who didn't like having 40 minute cutscenes, but that is one of the things that defined the series and I do miss them in this game.

Also, the open world is kind of pointless since nothing exists in it except for a few bases with troops. Each base may as well have been a separate level because absolutely nothing is going on outside of the bases. The problem is especially bad in the Afghanistan map, which also keeps you mainly on the roads.

The other thing that really annoys me is that the characters barely interact with each other, although I guess this is largely due to having no cutscenes. It's really annoying, though, because I don't feel like I'm learning anything about the characters...new players to the franchise will have no idea who they are. God damn it, I want to see these guys on the battlefield. Get out of bed, Miller and go and beat down some Russians with your crutch!

The other thing is that the objectives are always the same; there is almost no difference between main ops and side ops, except when the skulls or bosses have a role in the mission. This makes things get dull pretty fast, especially since there is barely any story driving things forward. Most missions are a loose pretext to go and extract a prisoner or kill a target, who you can just extract anyway. The problem with not having any story or cutscenes setting the scene is that every mission is the same and the people who you have to extract/kill have no personality or any real story behind them. They're just an objective. It makes gameplay so repetitive.

This game could have been great, but it doesn't have any quality that is really outstanding. They clearly sacrificed all story and character focus to improve the gameplay. While the gameplay is pretty good, it still isn't amazing or really fun. It gets repetitive quite fast and I feel like if they really had to go down this gameplay heavy route, they could have put a lot more effort into the maps and game dynamics, such as having contested zones, shifting battlefronts, or being able to use your motherbase troops to cause some shit. Or at least have some sort of allies or something different on the map other than just outposts of enemy troops...

Yeah, and as Shinji mentioned, Big Boss is basically a silent protagonist. I was worried about having Kiefer as the new voice, but I guess it doesn't matter since he barely speaks.

So yeah, my main problem with the game is that so far (finished Chapter 1, wont spoil anything) the story is lackluster and the plot is worse then Peace Walker (it was shit). The parts where its about Big Boss and his team are good and interesting but everything related to Skullface is bad. I'm hoping that Chapter 2 justifies this story being the one used to fill the time gap that was missing in the series.

I'd say my biggest problem as of yet is the game giving mixed messages surrounding certain Boss encounters. The biggest one being...

...the second encounter with the burning man. I had no clue whether to fight him or avoid him. I figured I was supposed to avoid the guy since nothing hurts him, but call in a chopper and he blows it up. So then I realize I need to use the water tanks, but that doesn't kill him, it only stuns him. So I figure 'stun him first, then call in the chopper'. Miller even explicitly tells you to stop him first before calling Pequad. But the stun doesn't last long enough. So I basically needed to time it so as to stun him as Pequad was arriving, and ignoring Miller's advice. It was fucking frustrating.

Same goes for extracting the truck from the Skulls unit. I need to get that truck out of there, but if I try to drive it the Skulls tear it apart in no time, and if I try to fight them they kill me in no time. If it wasn't for Quiet I never would've made it through that one.

The boss fights as of yet have been very meh. The two sniper battles were great, but every other one was just not up to Metal Gear standards.

And yeah, the story isn't great. And Snake/Big Boss might as well have been a silent protagonist with the amount of dialoge he has. Here's hoping Chapter 2 improves a bit on this. And just for those playing the game and getting to those long end credits... Don't worry, that's just the end of Chapter 1. I was getting seriously pissed initially thinking that was the end of the game.

There are about a million ways to win that boss battle. Also, the vast majority of the dialogue and plot information is contained in the cassette tapes.

You can fulton extract Volgin when he's stunned, you can put out his fire with the water pistol, you can use a shotgun or C4 to knock him into the pool of water near the gas tank, you can hit him with the jeep and drive him off a cliff into the lake, hit Psycho Mantis with a supply drop to knock him out when he pops out, etc.

As for the Skulls, D-Walker's minigun will easily shred them. Failing that, don't destroy/extract the escort vehicles so you can just jump into the tank and blow them away.

If all the faults MGS5 has, the AI is the least among them.

Personally, I'm fairly underwhelmed by the game itself, mostly because of how boring the game is. There's a lot of tedious grinding involved, and I absolutely hate Motherbase management, which was on of the reasons I disliked Peace Walker. But that's not a valid complaint, as I know it's only logical to add more depth to the series rather than just copying and pasting what MGS4 did.

The story is disjointed, the combat is pretty par for the course, buddies make the game far too easy, unnecessary micro-transactions are present, and the voice-overs are lame across the board - Kiefer Sutherland is just find, but the whole cast sounds utterly bored. I've never heard Troy Baker phone it in so hard. Worst of all is the ridiculously stupid plot-twist that I saw coming from the very beginning.

Personally, I didn't think this was a story we needed to have told at all. The events surrounding Big Boss becoming a villain was something I was easily able to fill in after the events of Snake Eater anyway. It's like God of War Ascension - fun idea, but did it need to be an entire game? Nothing interesting really happens.

Well, if I recall correctly, Kojima stated that Big Boss speaking less was completely intentional.

And I've seen people suggest that part of the reason they went with Keifer is because they were doing actual facial capture for the facial animations, and Keifer does a good job of emoting with his face, which is extra important in MGS5 because BB is CLEARLY sick and tired of all this BS.

Unsure if that's actually the case, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.

That said, apparently they had to drop an entire ending and mission chain from the game because Konami pulled the plug, let alone dropping the 'go back to the Ground Zeroes base' map, so there's definitely places where the game was shortchanged because of Konami's managerial decisions. Either because of budget, or because of their newfound apparent dislike of Kojima, the game definitely did get nipped from what the intent was.

Love the gameplay in this, felt very fluid and comfortable. While the maps could feel sparse in a way it made sense; there were wars on and the areas they were placed in were quite sparse.
Despite being absolutely hooked for the better part of two weeks I do have my complaints. Buddies (largely D-Dog) were overpowered as all hell. At least with Quiet you could control her level of power. I enjoyed the story for the most part but towards the end it felt rushed. There is also one massive plot thread that is never resolved:

Eli running off with Sahelanthropus is never resolved. At all. There's info floating around of the cut content and I cannot fathom WHY it was removed. It's meant to happen after the end of the game too.

Also Miller started to piss me off screaming about his revenge all the time. Plus at the end of the game it gets... REALLY convoluted. Moreso than usual.

HAVING SAID THAT, the ending was actually kind of nice, not the greatest but it was suitable. Felt like a 'thank you' in some respects. Plus the game broke me emotionally in a couple of segments. I don't remember the last time a video game made me cry.

The Quarantine mission was INCREDIBLY effective at breaking my heart. Putting on the goggles, desperately checking and double checking to see if they have a glow in their throat. Finding out the 'traitor' wasn't a traitor but in fact the guy who tried to contain it. Your iDroid pointing out that a staff member has died with every trigger pull. I even found myself saying 'I''m doing the right thing' while Huey was calling me a murderer.

A Quiet Exit was the other one. As cheesy as her explanation for no clothes could be I enjoyed the character. I'm also a sucker for romance. I loved the scene where she played in the rain with Boss. But that part where Boss was bitten by a Snake and she desperately tries to contact Pequod in Navajo and then she speaks English despite knowing it will kill her. I bawled. I bawled like a child.

So yeah, I adored the game, but it wasn't flawless. If it gets story DLC I'll probably get it.

The issue is that I really don't like long cutscenes. I enjoy watching movies, and I enjoy playing games. If I'm playing a game, however, it's because I want to actually play the game so I get frustrated if a cutscene takes too long, no matter how enjoyable it may be.

Nothing wrong with cutscenes themselves, of course. It's just that some games take them too far for my liking. I've heard that this one doesn't have as many long cutscenes so maybe this would be better, but if they've reduced the longest cutscenes down from 30-40 minutes to 15-20 minutes each I'm not sure it's much of an improvement. Still too long for people such as me, but too short for those who actually wanted those really long cutscenes.

No intro to a game should be an hour long cutscene. By the time I actually got the play the game I was too bored stiff to care.

That cut content was cut because they didn't have the ability to finish it. I'm really hoping that it's released as DLC so the game can be wrapped up properly. It's out there actually, and totally viewable. Look it up on Youtube.

Barring the beginning there are very few cutscenes at all so far about 35 hours in. Barely any of the missions have cutscenes, and they're usually too short whenever they do show up.

That's probably going to be a plus for you, but it's pretty disappointing to me. A ratio more similar to Metal Gear Rising would be a lot better in my opinion.

Still a great game though.

The game seems rather story light with a lot of the missions being just gameplay with only a minor story element.

One complaint I will level for myself is that the missions seem to be getting smaller. You start with that big map with a lot of bases and options to do. Though now a lot of missions seem to revolve around a single base without much reason to go to any other base.

Another thing was mention in the ZP video, you have tons just tons of weapons/items/ect, but the riot SMG is good enugh for most cases. Fit it with a scope and the only thing that stops it are the people in full armor. (And vehicles too)

Just curious, what platform are you playing on?

I am playing on PS3 and I have over 100 hours worth of gameplay invested in this so I cannot say this is a bad game. It does feel very underwhelming to me. My opinion is as set as its ever going to be by this point as I have almost done everything there is to do in this game after whch I am probably never touching it again.

I kind of wish their was more enemy verity. It's kind of a unfair thing to ask because wow wee there is a lot of verity already, but it's mostly the game dressing up the standard enemy with new gear. I would have liked to seem something like the skulls as a elite enemy type.
