Why is it always subs over dubs?

I generally prefer subs because the voices are more enjoyable/believable. But on the other hand, when I'm reading the subs (and usually as quickly as possible so I don't miss and word or two in their long-winded sentence) I miss out on the action. Granted, I'm still seeing it while reading, but I would prefer to fully watch it without having to worry about missing something else.
But hell, if the subs are done well, and that's what's readily available, I'm satisfied. And vice versa.

I don't even watch anime much at all, but here's why I like it: it's more close to the original script and it's a better translation. There are no synchronization limitations, so the translation in the subs can be as long or short as they need to be. I've tried both ways, and subs just usually make more "sense" because of this.
I'm willing to give either a chance; I just wind up preferring the subs more often.

There's also the facts that, personally, I love listening to Japanese and I have no problems reading subtitles quickly enough to still watch the show.

Depends how good the voice actors are. I'll happily go with dubbed if the voice actors are good, but i don't mind going with subbed occasionally either.
In some cases i just have to go with subbed though. I've spent the last few days trying to figure out how to get subs for Kung Fu Hustle to work on my PS3, the English voice actors on that are fucking URGH.
Because it's a comedy they must've thought they could get away with 10 years olds doing the voices in their worst foreign sounding accent.

Well, for me it's a mixed bag.
On one hand, I have a reputation for being a snobby veterin watcher (16 years of anime) & we snobby anime veterins concider mainstream anime & dubs to be "noob magnets," & everyone knows that old fans of anything have little tollerence for inexpenced newcomers into a fandom. I also have a deep-rooted resentment for Funimation & 4Kids; which slam-dunked Manga Corps on dreadfullness when they set up shop. A lot of us oldschool fans have also noticed how popular dreadfully mediocre series have become, simply because they're available on cable in English. We take this as "noobs have poor taste."
My more polite & decent half is simply sick of 16 years of inacurate translations, ill-fitting voices, & bad voice acting. I also think male Japanese voices are just sexier. Not all dubs suck though; Excel Saga, Gensoumaden Saiyuki, Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, the first 2 OAVs for Heroic Legend Arslan, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, etc. & sometimes the innacurate translations can actually improve the humor in a comedy when done right (Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman).
There are also just a lot of really dreadful dubs like Yu-Gi-Oh, Ghost Stories, Lost Universe, & Juubei-Chan, that should never ever be watched in english.

Now, this is not an anime show, but the Chinese film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is far better with subtitles than the dubbed version.

I prefer subs to dubs, mainly because of the poor english voice acting for most of the dubs (Not Johnny Yong Bosch though, he is awesome).
Also I noticed that some of the english dubs try to shoehorn jokes into the script. One example is in Digimon Tamers don't judge me, when Vikararamon attacks and the military shows up, one of the soldiers says something about "giant pig manuevers".

If I can I watch it both ways which is why I prefer getting it on discs.

Subs for me. Dubs sound so awkward when you're used to hearing Japanese. And they don't fit the character archetype any more, mostly because of the pronunciation and identity ("Hi, I'm from Japan yet I have a pleasant North American accent.")

alright, not a great anime fan here, really dont watch to much, however i am interested, the only thing that puzzles me is people saying they prefer "subs" because it is closer to the creators original vision, surely the creator originally intended it for japanese audiances that would instantly know what is being said, therefore watching it woth subtitles would have to opposite effect, not getting the emmersion that the creator intended and having to read along, is you had a good dubbing then surely that would be closer to the creators original thought because you can understand it without effort and just get straight into the story. the problem with anime is that some fans just take it far to seriously, just calm down guys.
