Why is Metal the dominant music genre on internet gaming forums?

I like Rock and Metal. Why? Because hiphop sucks, electronical music is too fake, rap is just poetry talking about hos and money. Worst kind of music is emo. It's sad they call it alternative rock...it's just sith! But ofcourse, everyone has his own taste.

I play bass and guitar also, and i can say metal, especially fast metal style and nu metal are the most difficult kind of music to play. Almost everyone can write poetry like hip hop singers but few can play good metal. It's high level of music. AND my playing is high level. High grade gaming and high grade music are connected :D You can't double walljump and make two headshots at the same time in UT and listen to pop music at the same time XD

I think that the reason that gamers listen to metal (at least any nerds out there) might be because they are trying to seperate from anthing mainstream.

It also could just be that metal is good music to listen while gaming.
metal has been mainstream, get off that horse already, we are not in the 80/90s anymore.

Cuz metal is for socially repressed morons with anger issues, and these are the main users of forums.

(the entire post above is a joke. I am a fan of metal as well as being a socially repressed moron with anger issues).

I was just wondering the same thing after watching 50 different CSS montage videos, all with the same loud, blaring metal crashing on your eardrums the whole time.

I'm disappointed by the number of people stating it's because Metal is inherently better than anything else, which is wrong. My music isn't inherently better than Metal, it's just my opinion that it's better.

The only time I've ever liked metal music is while playing Painkiller, because it... just fits the mood of relentless murder. Otherwise, the only "metal" music I listen to is Metallica, Live with the Francisco Orchestra, because I love that album.
S&M album :) love it too ^^

OT
i just like metal more than any other genre because it just feels right for me... was at Metallica concert last night with Mastodon and Lamb of God as opening act... A true metal concert and they way you feel and they way it gets you pumped... just no other music genre gets you going like metal...
and i just like the lyric's, Solo's... just the insane sound a metal song is cabable of ... = pure awesomeness... can really be described.. i will quote this:

"you feel the sound, its hits you right here *pounds on his chest*"

Because Metal (and their never ending spin-off genres) give me a rush when playing action packed games, especially Online FPS's.

I think this is defintely the best explanation I've seen in this thread. I think there is some sort of need in the nerd psyche to be different, and let's face it, snobby. Being into a non-mainstream music genre certainly affords you the oppurtunity to be a music snob, and that would also explain all the hate for any music perceived as mainstream in a lot of the music threads on here.

For me however, the best explanation is that it's a cultural thing, that metal music is a part (however peripheral) of the gaming subculture and people pick it up from each other.

Maybe lyrical things in it. The sound of it. The feel of it. It also fits into many games well. It can pump you up when you listen to it. There many reasons, i think.

You ever tried to do a dramatic transformation with Kung Fu Fighting in the background?

That would be why.

It's really no different than how Hollywood manipulates music in movies. It's all about the right music for the mood they are trying to project.

For some reason, when you stand before 10,00 screaming, blood thirsty orcs, all looking at you. I doubt you will ever find an Garth Brooks song that fits that "mood" better than a Celtic Frost song would.

i guess with the action packed games there needs to be action packed songs to pump you up. Imagine playing CoD WaW to some poppy tunes...
Your point is entirely blown away by games like Bioshock and Fallout 3. If you haven't played those, they feature old 40's and 50's style music, mostly big big band stuff in Fallout 3. They are very light and cheerful songs, as the player blows off heads.

I don't like metal. If you were to compare music to martial artists, heavy metal would be a warrior of the Maori tribes. It is harsh, brutal, angry, mad, and utterly uncivilized. It may very well be effective at accomplishing what it set out to do, but only people who delude themselves could consider it a joy to spectate at its performance. Take these opinions as simply that: opinions.
actually you've got your analogy very wrong. metal is overly civilized and overly complex in it's execution compared to most other genres of music out there. the funny part is a lot of the most celebrated and top guitarists are metal guitarists

with other guitar based genres you don't see people say "wow that guy is the best guitarist ever" but with metal you do. punk for the most part is the uncivilized, uneducated genre of music,
Maybe the 'punk' you see in some hollywood movie. Punk in reality is an incredibly diverse genre that includes everyone from descendants of pub rock like Cock Sparrer to art school types like The Talking Heads to 50s/60s enthusiasts like The Ramones.
actually punk isn't very diverse really, it's more or less 3 chord rock. you can divide it pretty much into a few bands and the rest branch off from there

there's the big 2 which are Ramones and The Sex Pistols, then there is the major players which are The Clash and Dead Kennedys. you can possibly add Black Flagg or even the descendants in there but the last one really comes from the bigger ones

when it started out most didn't know how to play their instruments.
which is part of what made it great. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsider_Art
actually if you wanted to see true outsider art in the music field, you would have to look at Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle and a bit later Skinny Puppy

i've been to all types of concerts over the years and frankly there's nothing like some good guitarist doing a monster solo for a few minutes. you don't see that at punk shows, alternative shows, industrial shows, electronica shows, rap shows, you only see it at a metal show
Or it's only at metal shows you see that kind of instrument wanking where the whole vibe of the show has to come to a grinding halt to watch some dude show off.

It's all a matter of taste. Just like how most people love "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes, even though it's the simplest tune to play.
actually you do see it at other shows as well, jazz, rock and the like. it's a way to show off the skills of the musician. sure some people might call it the musical equivalent of wanking but frankly everyone i've seen say that, especially the bands, are just jealous of the fact that someone can do that.

the bands i see claim that typically have middle of the road at best musicians that will never be more than a pop band who is made or broken by how well they chart.

as for it grinding to a halt, it really doesn't, most of the people will just watch and listen and admire the musician for doing that and give them the respect that they deserve doing something like that

When it comes down to it, when a rockets flying to a group of people a zombies head being blown off or an impossibly expensive car drifting around a corner while being chased by every officer in liberty city not many people want to hear,"UNDER MY UM-BUR-RELLA ELLA ELLA EH EH EH..."

I think it has something to do with rebellion against how we are (were?) seen as loners and different to 'normal' people, as is Metal.
Speak for yourself please, I listen to metal because it's a kickass genre and in retrospect fits the type of games I like, actiony sometimes over the top violence.

It's not that metal is the dominant genre, it's that people that don't listen to it but some other stuff(, like -core stuff, it's not metal, don't flame me for it [but i expect you to.]) is extremely popular and is what most people consider metal because it's what they advertise themselves on sites like myspace.
Not here to totally insult you, but I really hate when people have this elitist stance that -core genres are not metal. It is. It's a branch of metal. And if you respond with, "no, Cannibal Corpse is metal." Then you're saying that death metal is the only metal genre. Or if you say, "Metallica is metal." Then again you're wrong, Metallica is trash. Understand that there's a truckload of sub-genres within metal and whether you like those sub-genres or not, it's still metal.

because most gamers are white suburbanite kids, in their late teens, and frustrated with their lives. so they listen to music that "speaks to them.
Don't stereotype an entire group. I listen to metal because I like the complexity and how awesome it sounds. And my life is fine, I'm hardly angry, so I don't need music that "speaks to me."
