Why is Metal the dominant music genre on internet gaming forums?

Cause Rap sucks and Metal fits alot of the numerous action-filled game? Thats my reasoning as to why.
Wow, why does every music thread have to have someone who needs to voice their disdain for a music genre? By the way it's hip hop not rap, rap is a primary ingredient of hip hop music.

And quite frankly, I could play plenty of action packed games with hip hop in the background, though I only like playing games with the soundtrack that is given to me.

And there is far too much musical elitism on these forums, this won't end well.
I hate Rap, but I can enjoy hip-hop. Most notably Black-Eyed Peas, since they actually have great MUSIC and are not just shooting people and slapping bitches. You assume too quickly, and what you can do is not what everyone can do. I assure you I turn off the 'hip hop' (usually just the crappy rap though) selection in games that allow it. (Or only listen to the rock station in GTA's case) Rap is not music, talking is not music. Music requires music to be music. Instruments and singing help. Also if you are worried of things spiraling out of control, dont be the one to ignite the flame.
Wow, just...wow.

Once again, 'Rap' is not music, you are correct in saying that, because rap is not a musical genre, it is a rhythmic technique that is used within the genre of hip hop music. Hating a rhymic technique and then liking the genre that uses it is quite silly. I'm also not quite sure what I assumed too quickly, perhaps you could point it out.

Hip Hop music is a genre which contains over 40 subgenres, and I can assure you that there is mainly one subgenre that talks about shooting people and slapping bitches, and that's gangster rap. There are many other subgenres that don't talk about such things, Black Eyed Peas falls into one of them, but they are a mixture of hip hop and pop music.

Don't worry, I'm not worried at all about things spiralling out of control by the way.
I hate the stuff, deal with it. I have been in enough of these type of arguments to know neither of us will bugde on our views and will just result in us trying to make the other slip up, So I am just going to stop here. I am aware of my prejudice against this type of lets say entertainment sounds, but this is merely out of experience since most I hear sucks, and most fans of it tend to be people who piss me off.
Then fair enough. However I will say this much:

The problem is some of your statements have demonstrated astonishing ignorance.
He has a point. That is all.

No idea why it's the most popular genre, though it fits well in some types of games.

As for me, I listen to almost every type of music (favorite being any rock, and oldies), except for most gangster rap. Even that, however, finds it's way into my playlist when I play certain games like Saints Row 2... As long as the song is half decent and not about just raping people, which there is a few in the game already.

Atmosphere is hip-hop, but they perform with a live band. All the music (or beats to the uninformed) are recorded by real musicians. Just because Slug doesn't sing, doesn't qualify it as non-music.

There is plenty of hip-hop that uses real instruments. The Roots is by far my favorite example.

DJ Abilities does things with turntables that no one has ever done before. It takes a high degree of skill and talent to do what he does.

You don't have to like hip-hop, but don't make sweeping generalizations of the genre. It's ignorant.

I'm not a massive death metal fan, I'll listen to it ocasionally, I prefer alternative and industrial though. I guess gamers like metal because it's formulaic and has lots of hooks, and is generally a fast paced genre, all things that games share.

Loud I will give you, but atonal? What is atonal about The Clash, The Ramones, or Dead Kennedys.
That's actually probably just my (friend's) bad - most of the punk I've heard tends to go with "loud is good" instead of "learning to play your instruments is good."
I have nothing against punk, though.
I think that pretty much goes for all genres of rock music. I am glad to see you are not hating on punk music though.

Some pretty crazy stuff! I liked both of those, it would be a bit weird for me to listen to those while playing an action packed game, I tend to listen to game soundtracks, but I can easily see how that would work.
Maybe so, but that's what I thought at first that it would be weird not hearing the sound of distortion.
Yet some of the beats, you kinda sink into a trance and just let the violence fly.

It's really good fun when you get into a killing spree to a good musical score.
Both songs have been good to me in PvP.

I'm going to be as rude to correct you here, get crunk mo'fucker!
Hilarious mashup but...
Ha, that was amazing! I couldn't stop laughing for ages. Yes, Crunk is another example, the emphasis isn't on the lyrics, but they tend to have a similar kind of theme such as above (or just nonsensical in general). The other genres would be G-Funk, some forms of hardcore hip hop, and a good deal of southern Hip Hop, but that's not to say all of it. I won't count mafioso and Horrorcore, because to me that seems like they are adopting a certain theme for storytelling or entertainment purposes, like pirate metal.

Punk is awesome, and I love The Clash (I did see an album that I didn't have, but I didn't have the money for it at the time >_>) but isn't punk music a subgenre of rock music?

Id say it would have to be because...

1. The music can pump up people to enhance gaming, whenever I listen to SlipknoT I tend to be alot more powerfull in call of duty and gears of war
2. Alot of gamers tend to be the nerd stereotype/not have many friends. This can lead to anger, even when I get pissed off/someone talks shit to me, I listen to a metal song I can get the anger out peacefully

The reason its not on the radio much is because alot of the song has swears in it, and most radio stations dont even bother getting a censored edition or the bands didnt make a censored edition

Did I say that everyone had to? BEP has real music in it, but they do not all sing all the time. I never said anything against DJs, and I am pro musical Hip Hop groups. Read what I said a bit more closely.
Just because I write paragraphs does not mean they should be only skimmed. MUST I write only sentence long posts so people read what I say? Seems people like misinterpreting me a bit too much.

I like music. Not just metal. I like Everything but rap, hip hop/r&b, country, and bluegrass.
Woah now, a bluegrass technique can sound amazing when used in conjunction with other styles.
eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4RDr6XPpOg

Anyway geeks love metal because:
1. It represents power, aggression and masculinity, same reason jocks love sport.
2. Unlike most mainstream music, it's not uncommon for metal to demonstrate some complexity or intelligence.
3. Metal is often a rejection of the mainstream values to which geeks tend to be in direct opposition. Christianity for instance.

Because people on forums are more than intelligent enough to understand, that the music is far superior to other types of music in most aspects, such as variety, soul, effort to make it... plenty of other stuff that the masses don't seem to understand with their simplistic rap/rave/dance genres.

And lets face it, there's nothing more motivating in a game than metal in an intense match.
It all sounds mostly the same to me.
Which is to say loud and generally atonal
I don't see anything that makes current metal less simplistic than any other kind of music. A guitar being thrashed to death while a guy screams into the mike? Whatever. I like classic metal, Ozzy, AC/DC, Judas Priest, the Scorpions, that sort of thing, but the current stuff all sounds the same.

If I need audio caffeine to get me pumped up, it's going to be something in the electronic genre, something like Juno Reactor [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n01oW4bMA4E] or Kraddy [http://mk2systems.com/memekast/mk005.html].

But back to actually point of the post, and the question "Why so much metal on the Escapist?", I'd expand on what Cainx10a said - it's angry white man music.

Metal gets you pumped. All of the yelling and loud noises make you feel empowered. At least, that's the way it is for me.

Metal does not dominate the radio (and I believe you mean car radio) because most drivers come from a day and age when metal was dead, so they just don't want to hear it. Maybe metal will dominate the radio within the next 20 years. That's my hope anyway.

I was 7 years old the very first time I played doom. Knee Deep in the Dead level 9's background music is a Midi version of Pantera's Mouth For War. I loved that game criminally, and still do today. Needless to say before I had ever even heard Pantera. Many years later, when coming of adolescence, I heard Mouth For War. I think some sort of synapses fired and made a permanent connection in my brain. I'll never forget thinking "This was on Doom, this was on Doom. Doom equals rule, Music on Doom equals Rule. Music rule. Metal rule. Metal rule forever."

Aww...I thought Noise was the angry white man music. I guess I'll have to become a metal head now. I don't want long hair and leather pants. Or speed masquerading as good musicianship or an excessive insistence on Baroque complexity. Can I at least stick to Drone Metal?

Never heard of Gfunk, any you can recommend?

I have a certain dislike for sub-genres such as Pirate metal and the likes, I can dig folk metal but when you start throwing shit like pirates into the mix.
Soon we'll be listening to Ninja robot zombie chef metal, an Oriental, electronica, fugue played on the electric guitar using a whisk like a bow.

Glad you liked the mashup, it's awesome to say the least.

Is it wrong that I think that'd actually be pretty cool?
