Why is Metal the dominant music genre on internet gaming forums?

I just want to put it out there that I like hip hop/rap, seemingly contrary to everyone else here

Metal is the most dominant genre for this scientific reason:

Gamers enjoy awesome.

Video games = often contain lots of awesome
Metal = made of awesome.

Im not wallowing in anything nor do I use it as an escape mechanism for anything it just sounds good it is fast loud up tempo music. I dont care really about the subject matter of the songs it is more about hte emotion that goes into metal songs. It is fun and challenging to play. Truth be told I started getting into metal from playing rock band and the challenge of the songs made them fun and I started to enjoy the way the songs sounded the more I listened to them so in essence I found metal through gaming.

Other possibilities is that it makes sense that someone playing the role of a soldier would want to listen to a song called The Trooper it just fits perfectly with the role you are assuming. It is also just unfathmoable to me that anyone can listen to Iron Maiden and not fall in love with metal as a result of that

or maybe because metal rocks, I'm not sure
that's a good question, I wouldn't know since there's maybe 20 metal heads in my town

The term "metal" has a ridiculously large span of genres and sounds. Your definition of metal is probably much different than mine. Hip-hop, on the other hand...well, that's a pretty straight forward genre.

I find it hard to listen to anything else. A lot of music I hear isn't complex enough to draw my interest.

Must. Resist. Urge. (to advertise a certain group here on the Escapist)

Anyway, rock/metal is my music of choice because, well, I don't know. Maybe I just love listening to that kind of music. I myself, don't like those screamy/growly songs, and that's what the detractors always point out with metal. There are a lot of metal songs and bands that feature clean vocals. Kamelot, being my favorite (the vocalist's an Opera singer by training, how awesome is that?).

If metal is the dominant genre, then I must be the odd one out. I listen predominantly to blues, (acid) jazz, funk, soul and the odd hip hop song. What can I say, I like a good groove. But I also like electronica, rock, ska and yes, also metal. In fact, I used to be a metalhead, but over the years my tastes started expanding and changing.

It is sort of regrettable that many metalheads take this elitist stance and proclaim their chosen genres the musically superior one. I believe it isn't. I believe no genre is. Music is as complex and deep as you want it to be. The rest is up to individual tastes.

EDIT: here I am saying this with some art from Tool as my avatar ;)

It's not that metal is the dominant genre, it's that people that don't listen to it but some other stuff(, like -core stuff, it's not metal, don't flame me for it [but i expect you to.]) is extremely popular and is what most people consider metal because it's what they advertise themselves on sites like myspace.

When I was 14 I had two favorite things; playing some Quake 3 or Unreal with my buddies online or at LAN parties, the 2nd was metal, which stemmed from a torrid affair with Viva La Bam and the bands espoused by Margera and company (System of a Down, Children of Bodom, HIM, Bloodhound Gang, some others I can't even remember, i just remember that in hindsight they were pretty terrible sans COB)
My liking of metal evolved into stuff like Lamb of God and Slayer (after a brief period of Slipknot, Disturbed and Rammstein) and diverged into Dragonforce (before Guitar Hero 2 and their meteoric rise in popularity with nerds) and other Power Metal bands like Wintersun.
More recently I've been delving into more Electronica/Industrial stuff like VNV Nation, Assemblage 23 along with one of my favorite bands, Muse.
My recent preferences aside, I would say that the link between metal and video games, as articulated by other people in this thread, is the "Escapist" (HA!) element of both media.
In short, lots of people who identify as gamers (being as they play video games a lot, and can really get into the game and world of the game) are a bit alienated with other people. Of course, this attribute isn't applied only to gamers, this alienation can be seen in Metal as well.
Metal's really an easy scene to get into, unlike other things like sports or painting your nails or whatever non-gamers/rockers do. All you really need to fit in from the getgo is to espouse your anger and to find at least one band that you like (not hard to do with the wide variety of metal genres out there). This may seem a bit idealist, but Metal's accessibility gives it almost an 1800's American "Give Me your Tired, Your Poor, Your Hungry" vibe (for a better metaphor, tack on a "AND BUY ALL MY METAL ALBUMS" to the end of that).

oh, sorry for the wall of text.
TL;DR - Video games and Metal appeal to the same base interests; violence and ease of social interaction among fellow aficionados.

Because metal fans tend to be the most passionate, intense musical fans.
You, sir, deserve a hi-five and a bag of Skittles.
And you deserve a fine tankard of beer blessed by Odin.

I do not understand this attitude that metal is somehow solely about pent up frustration, anger and self pity.

Anyone who has ever actually been in the pit at an Iron Maiden or Metallica gig knows that metal is one big fucking CELEBRATION.

I can't think of any time I feel happier or more calm and content spiritually than when I'm jumping around like a primal ape with some metal blaring.

Hails to that! I raise a tankard in your honor, sir!
I clink my three pint tankard to yours and drunkenly spill ale down my three foot beard.

Now where did I put my battle axe of headbanging +10...?
