Why is Metal the dominant music genre on internet gaming forums?

Now I'll be honest and say I don't really like Metal, but I've noticed that for some reason on every internet gaming forum I go on or look at, Metal is by a country mile the most popular music genre, and this place is no exception. Despite my general dislike of the genre, it doesn't make me angry - just curious (after all, music taste is subjective).

Metal isn't dominating the radio stations, so why is this the case? I don't want to attribute all gamers to one taste because that's ignorant; since I know next to nothing about Metal I'd like to know what characteristics of the genre appeal to you and what, if any, connection do you see to the fact you're a gamer? Is there a connection or is it just a massive coincidence and I don't visit enough forums?

I always thought being gamers would make people more inclined to like electronic/8-bit music like the video below so I find this quite interesting.

I think it has something to do with rebellion against how we are (were?) seen as loners and different to 'normal' people, as is Metal.

Cause Rap sucks and Metal fits alot of the numerous action-filled game? Thats my reasoning as to why.

Honestly though, I really don't know but it seems there are an awful lot of metallers on here, but not everyone is.
I listen to everything but I love Electronica, dance whatever really. Listening to one genre is just hilariously boring without anything to compare it too.

I have playlists for different genres on my Spotify account, rap,Electronica,metal & I'm currently building a retro and relaxed playlist.
People need to expand their horizons more.

idk really but i know that whenever i am playing CoD or even just running a raid in WoW, i am always listening to metal, and for some reason i just seem to preform better as a gamer w/ it...i guess because it is a genre of music that i like and just metal in genral produces an adreniline rush like no other type of music could ever hope to rival

Because people on forums are more than intelligent enough to understand, that the music is far superior to other types of music in most aspects, such as variety, soul, effort to make it... plenty of other stuff that the masses don't seem to understand with their simplistic rap/rave/dance genres.

And lets face it, there's nothing more motivating in a game than metal in an intense match.

Personally I dont really see many metalheads around the place because alot of them turn out to be angry trolls =/

But for me trance/rave ( dont forget nerdy remixes ) seem to be dominant

I think rock in general is listened to by gamers not just metal but there are so many diverse genres of rock so that why rock is popular. There are a decent amount of metal forums on here but those people that post usually listen to more then metal.

Maybe some people are like me and don't understand elektronica because it just sounds really wierd to me and a bit pointless. I don't even like electronic stuff in the old rock it gives it a wierd sound that I don't like.

Well, the obvious answer is that the type of people that like videogames are the type of people that listen to metal, but as for why that is... I have no idea

Personally, I'm more of a rock person, but metal is a very close second.

Ok ok ok, on a more serious notice, I love euro Metal/Rock bands like Opeth, Porcupine trees, and a lot of them suit well the D&D and dark fantasy genres ...

I think that the reason that gamers listen to metal (at least any nerds out there) might be because they are trying to seperate from anthing mainstream.

It also could just be that metal is good music to listen while gaming.

Wow, why does every music thread have to have someone who needs to voice their disdain for a music genre? By the way it's hip hop not rap, rap is a primary ingredient of hip hop music.

And quite frankly, I could play plenty of action packed games with hip hop in the background, though I only like playing games with the soundtrack that is given to me.

And there is far too much musical elitism on these forums, this won't end well.

Country and Western? I could massacre to the sounds of Johnny Cash any day, it would be deeply ironic (or not, considering his stuff is pretty dark).
