Why is my internet so shit?

Can anyone help? We changed internet providers and the change over was about 2 weeks ago. They told us that the internet would be slow for a few days, but this is ridiculous. It takes about 5 minutes to load the latest Name Game comic strip and it won't work AT ALL for online gaming on my PS3. I can't link it up with a wire as they are in different rooms and it also defeats the purpose of a laptop if i link that up with a wire...

Can anyone help? I want it fixed so i can play games online (only thing battlefield is any good for as the campaign is so short... and i ain't wasting £40!)

You'll just have to wait. That's the only thing you can really do, it seems.
But it has been two weeks. Surely it shouldn't be this bad still...

You should probably ask about that to the internet providers...

You could set up a hotspot, my dad is able to do it for free with his (rooted) Android phone. When my Internet went down for ten-something days, it's all I had to rely on for online interaction.

Anyway, call them.

We had tons of problem with our connection as well. Called our ISP, they said they were sorry, and that they were gonna get the technical staff to look into it. 5 days later, our net is marvelous (3 times faster, doesn't drop out all the time). Just call them and explain your problem.

Commonwealth Telecom companies. I have never heard anything good about them. Hell, the horrorstories are worse than the BS AT&T put me through earlier this year. Sorry man.

Interesting. I fail it to understand why connection should be slow for a few weeks. I'd understand no connection at all, but not this.

Just curious...
Could you provide results of this simple test ?

Have you had a tech come out and check your box? Also, I'm curious what speed £40 gets you over there?

Andrew,
who's the new ISP? You can expect a 24-48 hour teething period but anything past that is ridiculous. Call the ISP and explain what's going on, if you get through to a call centre and they don't have a clue what they're on about, ask to speak to an engineer, or make an appointment to have one come out.

Something to try in the mean time, assign your computer a static IP address, just google it, you'll find guides on how to do it, the best ones will probably be of port-forward.com.

also do this, before AND after assigning the static IP.
Let us know how you get on. :)

I was talking about not wasting the money on battlefield 3. I have no idea what the cost of the internet is and my dads being a dick and not telling me.

Simply tell us. :)

Edit : Hmmmmmmmm... Bad news - with such weak results it's rather your ISP's fault than anything else. I guess there's no workaround other than contacting them.

BTW : You may edit your former posts, don't make a new ones that fast. :)

Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn !
Now i'm starting to think there may be also additional software problem. I mean - some malicious software working on your computer in the background. Do you have any Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software installed ???

Edit : Since i need to sleep i can't help anymore for now. Sorry. Things i'd consider in the meantime :
- contacting with your ISP
- full avirus/aspyware check (you may use comodo internet security for that, it's free and pretty reliable)
- different web browser (chrome, firefox, opera)

There are more options, for example trying some tricks with TCP/IP configuration, changing some properties of your network/network card, doing additional tests, but - it's my guess - they may be a little too advanced for you right now. ;)

That's the results of the scan. I'm guessing that's bad. And creepy.

But what i'm most concerned about is the PS3 not working at all. I can live with the laptop being slow, but the PS3 is very important to me right now (only escape from parents arguing about my brother knocking up his girlfriend) so i need it online. Only so much you can do offline.

I would never, EVER trust those "Run a free scan!" Ads on sites. They exist to sell you a product and they're not going to sell shit telling you "Not much wrong here, boss", they're going to go "HOLY FUCK HOW IS YOUR COMPUTER EVEN STILL RUNNING?!"

What were your results of the internet speed test, NOT the PC scan? (ping, Download speed, Upload speed)

I don't think he wanted you do do a registry scan, but a speed test of your connection. I mention this because the uniblue registry cleaner that it links to has been identified by some as malware. If you really want to clean your registry (which comes with some risk), you should use something trusted like ccleaner.

My net results are poor

DL speed: 1.39Mbps
UL speed: 0.58Mbps
