My butthurt Nintendo fanboy scanner is off the chart!

Seriously dude, I don't even know why you felt the need to make this thread. It's just complaining that something you like isn't being talked about as much as a game that's much more fun.

A. They're two completely different game with little in common besides fantasy elements and a focus on exploration, the audiences are fairly disjoint

2. If you haven't played it, don't judge it. The opinions you get are biased by the viewer.

3. Because people like it. Doesn't mater why they like it or your your opinion of it, people like it and that's why its popular.

4. Your insinuation that the popularity of one game somehow means another is less popular has no ground to stand on, these games have different audiences and its entirely popular that if it wasn't Skyrim it'd be some other popular game that you wouldn't like.

I love Skyward Sword. (It may seem weird that the first paragraph of a thread has no apparent connection with its title, but bear with me.) It's beautiful, well-written and solid, and really pushes the Wii's hardware to its limit. It is a game that everyone deserves to get, and a game that would turn any graphics junkie or motion-control naysayers into followers of the Nintendo way.
It would, but for some reason, everyone seems to be ignoring it in favor of a completely different game.
Now I have not played this particular game yet, but from what I've heard about it, I'm not sure I want to. A sub-standard if not retarded script, bugs and glitches in every corner of the game, a completely broken and lazy PS3 port and gameplay mechanics that have been outclassed by so many games before it add up to a game that doesn't deserve the memetic status it holds.
I'm not saying it's bad. I'm saying its place in the hearts of everyone here... confuses me.
Which brings me to my question: How did this all start? What were people looking forward to in Skyrim, why did they even care about it, and why is "Arrow to the Knee" of all the lines in the game quoted and twisted like it's an untruthful cake?
tl;dr: Why is Skyrim popular?
reason Skyrim is loved:

It doesnt suck, its intro though could be less of an exposition dump and the starting hill is annoying.
The glitches are absolutely hilarious. Physics? *****, im a Horse
It has minecraftian depth and gameplay evolved from an old and well enjoyed classic.
a level of refinement most games dont have.

The reason people who played skyrim like it is because while the voice acting still is crap, its alot better. The story itself is completely irrelevant to your entertainment, and unlike the story in Oblivion, not locked off to all but the most hardcore and forethinking players. you can do practically anything, and make your character look like how you want. Narrative is what you make in it, not something some unimaginative nintendo author decided to dictate to you.
Skyrim for anything but the PC is terrible. judging a game for a bad port on a non-home system when the game has very much inequal capacities on said console, is being narrow minded. Skyrim, and every elder scrolls game, host massive modding comunities that console games dont have. want your dragon flying normally instead of backwards? too bad PS3

Skyward Sword has these things going against it:

its a rehashed legend of zelda game with only one new thing and with a gimmicy setting.
this is Link #304. we stopped giving a shit about link and his incessant incapacity to remember he should shag the princess once his story is over. maybe if this link was female we would see some commentary on the game. Hell, having a Female link shag Zelda at the end of a Legend of Zelda game would make it the highest selling game of the year in the first hour of launch.
Motion controls as they are currently dont work. the Wii is sluggish, the Kinect is anal, and the move is just a bandwagon gimmic. Motion Capture studios would vastly improve the controls, but normal human beings dont have access to 10000sq" soundstages with perfect lighting, 60x million a pop high speed cameras, and the patience to velcro 250 white balls/dots to a black skintight velcro suit.

TLDR: Skyrim=New
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: Same shit, different day

I doubt the OP is reading these since the first couple of posts kind of killed his arguement. We should probably stop posting and giving this shit attention.

I'd like to preface this by asking you to not be a fanboy. It really looks like you're just bitter that a game (any game, didn't have to be Skyrim) that isn't Skyward Sword has captured the community's interest. It's... not a good light to shed upon oneself.

Nobody plays Elder Scrolls for the script or innovative gameplay. A lot of the glitches are funny rather than game-breaking, so that's not so bad. I can speak from experience that the PS3 version isn't "completely broken and lazy," it just has a lag problem, in the same way that the 360 version has a texture problem.

People play Elder Scrolls because it's fun. You probably have a friend, or at least know someone, who owns Skyrim. I'd suggest you go try it; maybe it'll help you understand.

"Why do people like Skyrim?"

What exactly do these two things have to do with one another? Because I can't help but get the impression that you're sulky about the fact that people (or at least the people here) are talking about Skyrim instead of Zelda.
You're correct. I am upset that people are talking about Skyrim over Zelda. Having played Skyward Sword, though, I believe that Skyrim would have to be PERFECT to better it to such a degree that it drowns it out. Considering the points I made in the original post, though, it is not perfect, and can't deserve more than SLIGHTLY more PR than Skyward Sword.
Wait...Skyward Sword is FAAARRR from perfect. The art design isn't up to par with TP or any of the previous releases, really. And the aging Wii hardware provides glaring graphical deficiencies when compared with Xbox, PS3, or PC. The wii motion plus controls are at times extremely frustrating.

That said, I played the shit out of Skyward Sword. Mainly because I love the Zelda story line and this one was most definitely not a disappointment. Also, playing the first one and being able to recognize settings from other Zelda installments was pretty amazing. However, its unfair to compare this to Skyrim. Skyrim was produced with cutting edge technology and is a whole different genre of video game. If we're just judging video games, though? Even with the nostalgia factor, Skyrim is a much better game. It provides much more entertainment per dollar.

I stand by my previous posts...people who ask this question are either trolling or living under a rock. Even if you don't like Skyrim or the ElderScrolls subtype of game, you can appreciate a well made product and understand why a whole lot of people enjoy the game.

You must have played a different Skyward Sword to me and everyone else. Skyward Sword was pretty average for a Zelda outing, but further tarnished by a horrific method of control.

Skyrim is popular because it's good. It's immersive, it's fun, and it eats hours like little else.

The same reason people talk about Uncharted 3 over Infamous 2. They like it more. I don't but I also don't say oh look at me I disagree with everyone else look look look.

"I've not played this game but im going to tell you how bad it is anyway!"

That just had to be pointed out though I imagine im not the first person to spot that. Anyway, onto the main event.

I bought (and loved) Skyrim because it was a successor to Oblivion and promised improved combat, better world, better dungeons and improved visuals over it's predecessor, it delivered on all of this and most of what made the previous games great also made a return.

Dude, Skyrim is a great game, there's no denying it. If you liked Skyward Sword so much you'd appreciated it for what it is and not subject it to some petty comparison to Skyrim in your mind.

Simple: its a good game, the reason why people pick holes in it is that quite frankly people have so many fond memories of playing other bethesda titles that they expect every game that comes out of their studios to be near damn perfect.

Anyway whats so terribly wrong with bugs and glitches in the first release, Its a very rare thing when a studio releases a game that promised so much to not have a bug or two flying around, ie: look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R ok not a AAA title but a series of games that have a Massive cult following; they release buggy. Minecraft was and still is a buggy game and is still one of the most popular games of all time.

I havent seen anywhere that say's that the script writing is bad, hell The Elder Scrolls has won literary awards to being one the best written game universe's out there.

The source of "arrow to the knee"? probebly 4chan.
