It's a solid single player RPG, that leaves you a lot of freedom. Games like that are rare. It reminds me of the old Gothic tiltes (and of course the other Elder scrolls games).

The reason why Zelda didn't get as much attention is the old Nintendo problem, the title is limited to the Wii. I don't think that a very high percentage even owns a Wii. Everyone on the Escapist can play Skyrim though - I assume almost every user has either a Ps3/xbox or a computer, so the audience is much bigger.

Also, I don't think that you can compare Zelda to Skyrim. Skyrim is a Rpg with a serious touch, the new Zelda is a colourful Adventure game. Don't see why they should be compete in any way.

That Skyward Sword that will turn naysayers into fans?
Hakumen makes a valid point. As does Yahtzee.

I just like the Elder Scrolls games...
I love the open worlds and the quests.
And I love the mod support they all get.

As for why I don't have Skyward Sword...
I just don't have a Wii, otherwise I'd have gotten it.
Now if only they'd release it for the Gamecube...

Because Skyrim is a vast world with actually fairly decent writing with the ability to take your character in any way you desire and you can chose how to go through the game (missions and such). You can equip your character any way you want, play as a mage, warrior, heavy warrior, spell sword, rouge, archer, or as any species you want the choices are endless as the land it takes place in.

Why isn't Skyward Sword getting the same recognition as Skyrim? Well I'll start by saying that Zelda games are still very popular despite it starring the same bloody game staring the same characters with the same gear with the same plot. Every, single game. And in terms of visuals? Skyward sword is the ugliest Zelda I've seen, Link looks like he's just gotten some botched plastic surgery with those lips and the nose. In terms of Zelda titles Twilight Princess and especially Windwaker look FAR superior to that game and had a FAR better story.

Skyrim is bigger, there's more options, there's more ways to play, equip yourself, it's never the same game twice, it's story is different every game, there's no set path in the game to where to go, and to top it off you can mod the game and put whatever you want in the game.

Is it a better game? No it's all subjective.

I think y'all postin in a troll thread. I remember seeing this guy about, and most of the threads he creates are all like this. While I do encourage discussion, im not sure its possible with this guy/girl sometimes, he/she doesnt really take critisism that well or listen to reasons people give relevant to the topic. I do hope this changes in the future but asking "why is game x popular" or "why is game x more popular than game y?" seems kinda...trollish. Frankly, he/she should know by now why a lot of people like it, with the billions of skyrim threads that popped up over the last couple months.

As for why people like elder scrolls games, and skyrim in particular? Well, its an open world game series where you can do anything at anytime. Its non-liniarity is a trademark of the series. You can be who you want to be in that gameworld, whether it be a wizard, rogue, warrior, or any mix of those. Heck, you could even just roleplay a merchant if you wanted to, and just level up speechcraft and merchantile. While there are glitches, not many are gamebreaking and it would be unreasonable to expect the devs to get every single bug out. I love the series, just like I love the zelda series, but when I dont feel like playing our hylian hero, I like the option to play my dark elf assassin with a heart of gold.

In conclusion, please do more research before you go asking such questions. A quick search bar check will give you many many threads answering your questions. Also please be a bit more open minded, not everyone will agree on everything, but a little consideration into another persons point of view can do wonders.

I love Zelda. I love Skyward Sword.

I've never cared about Elder Scrolls, and Oblivion certainly didn't keep my attention. But from what I've played of Skyrim, it's freaking awesome and I'm looking forward to getting it this summer. (When it won't interfere with school and other games I wish to play first.)

Umm... wait a second...

"Skyward Sword is so awesome!"
"Why do people like Skyrim?"

What exactly do these two things have to do with one another? Because I can't help but get the impression that you're sulky about the fact that people (or at least the people here) are talking about Skyrim instead of Zelda.
You're correct. I am upset that people are talking about Skyrim over Zelda. Having played Skyward Sword, though, I believe that Skyrim would have to be PERFECT to better it to such a degree that it drowns it out. Considering the points I made in the original post, though, it is not perfect, and can't deserve more than SLIGHTLY more PR than Skyward Sword.
I like how your a typical fanboy, raves how a game is perfect/better than another game. Yet you havent even bloody PLAYED the other game. How bout you borrow a copy or do something else to obtain a copy nudge nudge and try it before you whine openly on a gaming site. IMO skward sword isn't that great of a Zelda title so skyrim is better than skyward sword. "Also pushes the Wii's hardware" L O f'n L

I know how you feel, man. I just HATE it when people are talking about things that they like rather than what I like. It annoys the hell out of me.
OT: All I can really say is "Deal with it." If you like your Zelda game, fine, that's great. But, I don't see the point in saying Skyrim is bad because people talk more about it than Zelda. I loved L.A. Noire, but I don't get irritated when people don't bring it up in favor of a different game.

a game that would turn any graphics junkie or motion-control naysayers into followers of the Nintendo way.
LOLWOT?

Obviously not, since the major defense Zelda fans are using against people who didn't like the game (Other than the tired and lame "haters gonna hate") is "you just suck at motion controls!"

It would, but for some reason, everyone seems to be ignoring it in favor of a completely different game.
Ignoring? Hardly. I can't even tell if you're serious at this point.

tl;dr: Why is Skyrim popular?
Because It's an Elder Scrolls game, meaning they could place a turd in a box and get a 8/10.

But beyond that, we're talking a large, open-world game with the freedom to build your characters as you see fit.

People tend to take the bad with the good.

But I have to ask, are you seriously going with "why do people get all fanboyish about some game other than the one I'm so fanboyish about?"

I love how to creator of this forum is taking down to skyrim and supporting skyward sword and asking the question of "why do people like skyrim?". I've seen arguments on the first page and the creator (jailbird) admits to being a fanboy as to explaining why he loves zelda more than skyrim. so I understand what he would think of this brand new game from a series that hasn't made a game every year like zelda, and has so much more story and things to do as a rpg than zelda which has a strict storyline and similar endings to the previous game.
Listen when first saw the skyrim teaser I said "meh", as I got oblivion and didn't enjoy it as fallout which I enjoy so much, but when I saw the first bit of gameplay I was impressed by the sheer potential the game had and the lovely interface of it all. The game made me a godamn fanboy in the case of zelda, not at all. I've played it at my friends house and didn't enjoy it much. my friend who is a hardcore zelda fanboy, loved skyrim much more than zelda actually and admitted that the zelda franchise needs to grow on you for you to enjoy every game.
So yah skyrim YAH skyward sword NAH.

Now I have not played this particular game yet, but from what I've heard about it, I'm not sure I want to. Why is Skyrim popular?
with a little editing of your post, it explains it all.

the problem is you love zelda, and you don't like skyrim cause it stoled zeldas thunder.

so you look for every source you can saying its bad, ignore every source saying its good, and came up with your own conclusion with out playing it, and made this thread out of jealous spite.
