Why is there always ancient technology?

I have the same problem with Metroid. How is it that the ancients built all of their transportation systems to accomodate a ball-form?

Well, if none of the traps and platforms worked, then it would make a for a pretty boring game.

Very true..it would kind of make it pointless if you could walk right in, get what you are looking for, and leave quietly likes it's a 7/11 or something.

Technology is whatever the pinnacle of science is at that time. Sharpened sticks were technology once.

My only complaint is when the "ancient" technology is somehow more advance then anything we have.

Because UFOs abducted Rube Goldberg and the Vietcong to design and build the Pyramids... or at least that's my blanket explanation for all ancient technology-based plot mechanisms.
