Why is there not a severe overpopulation problem in the Pokemon world?

Even Charizard's Seismic Toss can't kill the lowliest Rattata, they only faint, and that's nothing that can't be fixed by the Pokemon Center. However, apparently Pokemon do die because there is a Pokemon graveyard in Lavender Town. So it seems that the only way for a Pokemon to die is of old age, but at the same time they breed and expand in numbers. Imagine if you couldn't kill rats and pigeons in real life - they would soon be EVERYWHERE, eating EVERYTHING.

Maybe the Pokemon of that world follow the same "rules" as humans of this? When life gets good, reproduction is no longer a high priority. The higher the quality of life, the fewer children people have =3. No need to pump out a lot to have your family live on, as they are much more likely to grow up. The Pokemon world seems to have a very good life-quality average X3.

Pokemon seem to be much more ingelegent than animals.

Trainers are regularly beating hundreds and hundreds of wild pokemon into unconsciousness. That world doesn't need a traditional predator/prey system, as the carnivorous beasties need only wait until someone knocks their prey out for them. So I imagine a lot of the 'mons you leave scattered behind you get eaten. Since people need to eat too, I assume there are also humans waiting to grab unconscious rattatas/bidoofs on a regular basis

Well, I think it's implied with, as you said, the graveyard and also the game deliberately dodges issues like reproduction too with just saying and egg appears and offering no explanation. It's just something they chose not to bring up.

They faint because game is aimed for kids and they don't want mature violence in their games and because then PETA would call it probably animal killing simulator.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Just because they faint doesn't mean they won't die. Considering that many PokeDex entries add something about prey, it's obvious they eat other Pokemon. And the easiest prey is the one that can't do a thing about it.

If they're caught, then they don't have to worry about dying as someone can actually look after them.

Has anyone notice how there's almost no infrastructure either? There's no roads (except for that one bridge in Black and White), almost no public transport and the only services seem to be for pokemon. Imagine if every shop on Earth was just there to cater for cats. There'd be anarchy!

They do die, thats why Lavender Town has a Pokemon graveyard. Also it seems that Pokemon only produce one offspring when they breed so ideally the parent to child ration is 1:1. This indicates a stable population.

You do know that Pokemon do eatother right? Well the carnivore Pokemons that is.
Sure in the cartoon you only see them eating fruits and pellets but if you read some of the Pokedex it mention some of them do eat meat e.g. Ekan eat pidgey eggs and Anorith use its claws to capture preys.

Pokemon are actually quite endangered.

The myth of the happy, free-range adventure pokemon. You never see the slaughterhouses in the pokemon literature. The resistance is fighting to change this. We will expose the world to the harsh reality in which pikachu roe is harvested from live pikachu. Most of the pokemon are converted to pokesushi, where they are eaten in trendy japanese restraunts.

don't even get me started on dewgong soup.

You cut the nub off the head and throw the rest into the ocean. You need 100 nubs for one pot of soup.

Shhhhh.... I quite enjoy my Snorlax steak thankyou. Don't ruin it just because you can't handle the pure awesomeness of psyduck liver. -_-
