Why isn't Kirby popular in the states?

Because kirby is not only irrelivant, but incredibly annoying. Thats my opinion, remember, you asked for it.

Irrelevant how, exactly? He has 9 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kirby_media] games currently released, all of which had some good reviews. Furthermore, his E3 showing this year received much acclaim, so I fail to see his lack of relevance in the gaming community.

Wow. What an interesting idea that used in that one. Gameplay mechanics seem famliar though. Can't seem to put my finger on it.

The funny thing is, I first discovered Zelda when the shop was only selling Kirby's Dreamland in conjunction with Zelda: Links Awakening and not on it's own. The kirbys on the SNES were good too, loved being able to take powers.. when they brought in the pets it went a bit over the top but that's alright. Hadn't heard of Kirby games after that...

Americans have figured out that Kirby sucks. :) Someone pointed it out earlier, Kirby games were HUGE here about 20 years ago, its just I dunno, the premise ran dry. Platformers just seem to have a limited life span here. Every now and then we need some new sprite to run, jump, and use its special skill/power. Though I'd have to say if it has something to do with style then it is less the effeminate thing and more the crazy psychedelic dream world plot thing. We are the country of American Idol, CSI, Survivor, etc., most americans just aren't into the whole surreal thing (not all, there are always exceptions to generalizations, myself included).

Well just watched the trailer, guess we'll have to give him another chance, he only sucks as a spaceship now I guess.

Never said he was irrelevant to gaming, but he is irrelevant to me and prolly 90% of the american gaming demographic

Hmmm... Not sure what to think of it. It looks like Kirby as far as gameplay, but not at the same time...

And is it odd that this game seems to have better "paper" (or fabric) effects than the Paper Mario games?

I love that little Pink spud. He's right up there in my top 5. His games have also always been fairly well recieved critically, I think Air Ride being one of the lowest.

I guess the stigma of him being a Nintendo character and a pink one at that. In a society who value roided up super men inside a bank vault's worth of armor, cute little pink marshmallow's aren't quite as well recieved. Shame too because Kirby's games, as previously mentioned, are pretty good.

I thinks its because Kirby has barely had any console games and a lot of standard hand held games. They were good but still interchangeable and same-y. Kirby is just not as big of a game character for Nintendo to worry about unlike Mario or Link.

What's his personality? What's his purpose in life? I feel like I could answer those questions about just about every other game mascot. I think the pink blob has a bad PR agent.
Kirby's personality=Cheerful
Kirby's purpose=To help out people in need and to eat all stuff

And I think the main reason is because of the sparse release of his titles (though all of them are good when they do come out), and America's hate on happiness, pinkness, and all around adorableness

I thought it was because he was a cannibalistic serial killer that impersonated his victims.

At least that's why I don't play him.

Kirby's a furry pink hairball and only noobs use him in Brawl.
Kirby has no hair, good sir.

But pretty much it's because they're usually extremely easy games (unless you're going for 100% where they occasionally have some mild challenge) with very bright, colourful graphics and they're pretty much everything America derides as childish.

The new Kirby game still makes me sad : (.
Kirby is a blob that has no regard for sentient life, and is only concerned with satiating his appetite and causing widespread destruction, as well as emotional trauma. What's more, he's an anarchist. It can't get anymore badass, or manly than that good sir. So why he isn't popular peaks my interest as well.

Kirby Superstar/Fun Pak=Epic game, I even played it in hospital as a kid when I was 5. I remember it fondly. The DS remake was also really well done.

I love Kirby and I grew up on his games, but as much as love them, they were just too damn easy.

Also: Meta Knight was pretty badass.
