I think Kirby got some Sonic treatment, although not quite as bad, also, being a Nintendo exclusive character he got rather pitiful exposure across 2 console generations. He also came in late with the NES, so while everyone knows Super Mario Land on the GameBoy and Super Mario Bros on the NES, and then Super Mario World on SNES, and so on, when Nintendo was big, that's the character everyone knows. Kirby was less known all around.
