I've been thinking about a lot of popular series and I'm wondering why are the popular?

The series in question are

Half-Life
Halo
and Harry Potter

Half-Life: Awesome shooter for it's time, good story.
Halo: Mindless and fun.
Harry Potter: Still have no clue.

Those are my reasons.

Hmm. This is pretty easy.

Because people like them.

Just because you don't doesn't mean others don't.

Half-Life: good story and puzzles and other fun items.
Halo: was good when it first was released and it spawned many a fanboy who still follow it like a religion
Harry Potter: the christians said it was evil and demonic and people bought to defy them

Surely that's essentially the definition of "popular"? It's not of itself a reason :p

Here's a question for you Mr OP.

Why do you think the search button is so unpopular?
It would save so many repetitive threads if more people bothered to use it. It even finds relevant threads nowadays, which is better than it used to be.

Half-Life because both games were very advanced for their time, and included a lot of innovative and original gameplay elements, as well a story that was good and didn't get in the way of the game.

Halo, which I don't like either, was the first console FPS to offer such a solid MP experience and to have very easy to handle controls.

Harry Potter because they're great books, which are perfectly paced, don't shy away from vocabulary while not being pretentious about it, because, like Tolkien, Rowling uses old folk myths and legends and adapts them to her own world. Also, they created a universe that is fantastic in theme but believable in its execution.

Halo? Different? New? How? It is a good(not great) FPS. On a console. That is all. It did nothing new or different. Besides maybe auto regenerating health, which is a terrible idea. It also had a good story, for the first one. The main character Master Chief is also pretty awesome.

As for Harry Potter that is easy. The books are a relatively well written series of books that young people can relate to as it is based in a school.

Half-Life? Well, that is easy too. It was one of the first FPS's with a story that was more than just "hey look, monsters, kill them". It also broke new grounds in terms of graphics and gameplay too.

Look! On the horizon! Do you see it? Yep, there's a flame war a comin'. Feel it in my bones too.
I'm not asking which is more popular just why are the popular. Its a question asked because I don't have an answer for it not to insight a tournament where academics battle for their favorite series.

Because people like them and they are easy to get into. People have different reasons for liking things, not everyone is going to have the same reason.
