*thread jack ahoy!*
What really confuses me is the impractical clothing. What the hell is Cloud wearing in that picture? It's like half of a skirt with only one sleeve held together by two belts. How do you fight in that?

I think it may have to do with momentum. It is a simple equation.

Coolness is equal to spikey hair times momentum (Force divided by time) to the power of gravity (9.8 m/s^2) times the mass of the sword.

C=S(F/t)^GMs

"Why indeed" was my answer when seeing this topic. Anime seems to be chock full of it and I barely remember a series that had swords of a normal size i.e that weren't over the top in terms of size, shape and power.

I'd rather be interested in a sword-wielding character who had genuine true-to-life skill, rather than someone screaming at the top of their lungs before hoisting up a blade the size of an orbital elevator. It's irritating and incredibly clichéd.

Besides the obvious Freudian connection?
Pretty much hit the nail on the head with that too.

I realize that others have said this, but it's because they're compensating for something.

I personally think shield + longsword is "cooler" as I rather go for realism in fantasy than what people call "awesomeness" theese days. That being said; I see the appeal in a huge two-hander which chrushes through anything, and I guess there's kind of a humorous side to it.

I always wondered why a character would choose to wield a sword when guns are around as well. Realistically, a gun can do just as much damage as a sword, if not more. It makes no sense.
I think this is the best of both.
What about the gunblades in FFVII: Advent Children. Y'know, the ones that could actually fire bullets?

Also, it seems clear that the people using these ridiculously large swords can block bullets with them, so guns are kinda pointless against the might of the skinny androgynous teenager. That just makes them yet more ridiculous...

{First actual thread!}

Well I've always wondered and I've decided to ask. What is so attractive about swinging around an excessively and unrealistically large sword?

JRPG's are the staple of the extremely large sword, but I ask, why? Why a large sword, when a small one would probably be less unruly? Why a sword, when guns are available, even revolvers or western guns that seem to be popular in anime.
it's actually bandages
Not only why the gigantic sword, but why the sword at all?

{This is a bit short, I realize, but I don't really know how to post those nice long ones; I don't really do the forum thing.}
why does the sword in pic 2 have toilet paper on it?
it's actually bandages on his sword. the bandages are symbolic of how he is restricted in the kingdom hearts universe his strength his memories and his existence in kingdom hearts

Isn't it obvious... They are all over compensating. Like a man with a big car and very loud engine.
Damn them overcompensating for having so much money!

....that's what you meant, right?

On Topic: Because large swords look imposing and badass. Standard heroes have normal sized swords and guns, manly badasses wield swords so large they can cut buildings down with them.

because swords are dick extensions, and the japanese have much to compensate for.

But seriously, they are phalic symbols, thats why people love them so much.

EDIT: to the beowulf comment, that story was all about how weapons are for people with huge vaginas, real men use thier hands.

Second question, how can they even swing that thing fast enough to be any kind of threat? I think they would drop it quickly if they fight with one arm (which they always do) and chop their feet off.

Because when a massive sword gets dull it's still a highly effective weapon. A dull small sword will just crack a few ribs at best a big one will crush your skull.

It's phallic imagery. People are attracted to it, and designers subliminally put it into games. Gigantic swords are a symbol of dominance, expressed in a very masculine way. You know Pyramid Head, right? That is the sort of shit he represents.

I suppose it's because being able to lift the sword and use it would make the user pretty damn strong and look "badass"

Don't forget, the West has it's fair share of pretty silly weapons too.

Actually No.. JRPG's are not the stable of oversized swords at all.
They're just prettier made in JRPG's so they get noticed.

Also, haven't seen Kaguya Nanbu's sword now have you?

Anyway. It's a matter of taste. I like big swords but I can't at all use one because they're too heavy nor would I want to wield one. With the exception of Sephiroth's Masamune of course.
..............what sword?
