Personally, I feel very strongly about the saying "Might makes right". I can't think of any problem that can't be solved with force, granted enough is applied. Thats just the way the world works, isn't it? I think so.

Probably woudn't help much Though I was expecting that response and toture is vector for digital security fortunately most users never know either the prive or public key as those are generated as part of the connection without the users knowlege. beating up a nerd wont help. Beating up a user won't help and best brute force attempts probably wouldn't break it in your life time even with a significan't investiment in a cluster of say 1,000 computers.

Hmm... I've heard of the literary theory that life and death are the biggest things on our collective minds - hence sex and violence (things that cause life and death, respectively). It actually makes the sex and violence in media make a lot of sense - it's just an extension of the human existential crisis about the nature of life and death.

Also, I can see that the destruction of something (say, a tree being cut down) can lead to growth (say a house being built from the lumber).

Or, on a basic biological level, we must do violence to our food (even you Vegans, abusing all those innocent plants) in order to survive. I can sort of see that as being the reasoning behind this thread.

Not... sure how the sun fits in, though.

Wouldn't this come under the more powerful the computer, the faster the brute force method works.

Does brute force apply on your example?

Yes brute force would count, but the last time someone tried to crack something that was it was around 2002 they have 30 grad studends they were working on a 32 bit key and it took nearly 5 years using a cluser of 100 computers. Computers have gotten faster and you can build bigger clusters, but the problem gets exponentially harder the more bits you add sor 256 is a lot harder than 32.

but my point is there are things were physical force ( we are talking violence here so don't go trying to change the meaning of force to get around it) would in no way help you.

Knee-jerk reaction I guess. It always blows people's mind when I explain the sheer violence going on under the hood of their car when they start their engine.

Different meaning. Violence meaning energy and power. The OP was referencing violence in the sense of killing, maming, fighting, hurting. None of which happen in a car engine. (normally at least)

hmmmm, I might have to give you this one. Of course it probably wouldn't work because 4 countries would drop a nuke on you before you finished your muahhahaha's but it at least has the potential. And it is so over the top that I just have to give it to you.

Violence is a possible solution, but I firmly believe that it should be a last resort. Hell, there are animals that resolve conflicts without resorting to violence, why can't we?

The biggest problem a lot of people have with violence today is that it's glorified. Violence is made to seem not only acceptable, but cool. It also seems that the more brutal and gratuitous the violence, the cooler it's supposed to be.

I'd just like to know why sex is somehow still more taboo to glorify than violence.

I'm just curious about your why you think violence = existance of the sun. If you are thinking violent reaction like the nuclear reaction that is the sun that is a very different mean of violence and basically means energetic.

It's simple. God woke up one day, went to a ball of gasses and said "I swear to myself, if you don't form a sun right now I'll punch you so hard it'll bring about the Big Crunch early".

For those who ask about the sun it's a big engine consuming hydrogen to put out heat, radiation, and many other things the act of consuming, heating, radiating are the acts of violence. Violence comes in many forms isn't just about hitting.
