Why the hell do you care?

I've noticed a lot of "When will "a" end" threads around lately and I've gotta ask the people who start these threads one question...

Whether it be Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Dynasty Warriors or any other venerable series, if you don't like it why do you care if it keeps going? You're not playing the games, the companies and creators that make them aren't going to suddenly make games you will like if you didn't like their other work.

So yeah, why make such a big deal about long running series?

Also you never see a "When will Elder Scrolls end (6 games and counting)" or "When will Might and Magic end (god knows how many games/spinoffs and counting)" personally I think it's just Yahtzee inspired and poorly informed bandwagon jumping.

I agree completely and I also do not care. If I like a game, I'll buy it and if not, then I won't. I really don't care if they keep making Dynasty Warriors until the end of time because it doesn't affect me in the least.

I'm not familiar with your taste in games rossatdi, but do you remember Western RPG's before Baldurs Gate? No Storytelling, No Characters, pretty much just mindless Dungeon Crawling. As well I don't really think Oblivion can be said to have "good characters" in any sense of the word, seeing as Martin has what? 10 Lines in the game?

(I forgot Fallout, but its the exception to the rule)

bandwagon jumping does exist in massive amounts on this forum from time to time, but the when will it end thread is a fair enough conversation point as long as it isn't a "this game series sucks and I hate it" thread in disguise.

The sad thing about having them posted over and over again is that the answer is always the same: when the franchise stops making money.

In the game's industry right now, every one is about franchising and sequels (it's gaming's equivalent to the mid eighties movie scene, Police Academy 8 Anyone? How about Revenge of the Nerds 4?) The obsession with sequels and franchises will drop down within five, maybe ten years, it is already starting to get old.

As for established franchises (like Metroid or Morrowind) they stand apart from things like Gears of War or Halo because their enduring nature is based on something different than the corporate equation.

I actually gauge a lot of the threads as...

"I hate this game! Why doesn't everyone hate this game? Why aren't I more right?"

Basically it's a lot of grandstanding bullshit that annoys me.

Grandia II had a pretty good combat system. But the characters were generic with a capital G-E-N-E-R-I-C.
