dude, scripting AI is really difficult.

In recent memory the only games I played where the friendly AI was bearable was in Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic

Never played KOTR, but Mass Effect, I completely agree. Some of the best AI work I've seen, and useful, but I'll still kill them myself if I hear 'not now, Sheperd!' one more time.

The AI in Left 4 Dead is decent as well, if I must add something. Smart enough to point out where the big baddies are, yet still dumb enough to have a pecking order as to who is going to save YOUR LIFE! Any L4D fans in here will know what I'm talking about.

Once AI is like an actual human gaming will be awesome. Imagine this... your playing a stealth game and from your hiding spot you yell I am the ghost of christmas past and have come to eat your bananas! That would be hilarious.

I'd have to disagree on L4D: the number of times I've been pinned by a hunter and being mauled by a large horde only to have an AI survivor walk towards me backwards, stand next to me for a few seconds, before turning around to try to free me, instead of shooting stuff off me as any sensible player would do.
Ok, maybe a minor irritation rather than a major flaw, but still intensely annoying when it happens in a tight vs game (and please don't say 'you should be playing with friends': it's rare that there are 4 of us that want/have time to play a game at the same time, and (rage-)quitters do happen*)

*general comment: not just directed at you Smurfy

Crappy AI is easier to program. Do you know how hard it is to create intelligent AI that's not overpowering? You have to make it just right. You don't want AI that does everything for you, but you also don't want AI that runs right into the middle of a firefight that has no idea what he's doing. This is extremely hard to program and rarely done right. Just give the developers some time and they should get better.

This

There are so many aspects to programming AI. Computers think in a linear method, and most modern games demand they think in a non-linear fashion. I hope that AI gets better, but with people constantly demanding new game play innovation and shiny graphics it gives developers far less resources to spend on AI.

Sliiight disagree on the Mass Effect part. I find that they rarely go out of their way to independently change their position to be able to fire at enemies, nor do they actively seek cover if they are under heavy fire. But if they do move themselves, you can bet your biotic implants on them running in front of you.

For example. Today I was playing the DLC-world, and I'm in one of those fusion torch-houses. There's a sniper across the room. Garrus stands still in front of the entrance. Gets hit once. Almost dies. He stands still. He gets hit the second time. He dies. I use Unity. He stands still. Dies.

But yeah. What goes without saying is that I'm an idiot for not using the squad commands. But still, those little things that would make it so much more enjoyable. I don't really care if they get in my way to be honest, but they could at least do more than watch me fight off Batarians.

It's however not often that I find the allies to be more than bullet magnets or punching bags. It is not often that I randomly get an XP gain and money without me killing something myself. Mass Effect AI may be skirting the border of bearable, but I could do without them, I think.

Yeah, KOTOR was more or less the same, it was made by the same developers, and used the same 3 party system, and the AI actively fought and didn't need much commanding, the main differance was that KOTOR is set in the star wars universe and had a better inventory system ;)

Yeah, thats happened to me a few times, especially on the harder difficulties, but I haven't run into that problem a lot, I have, but it was rare for me, although I did issue commands every second or so.

Now why is it this way? Why are most AI this pathetic?
Because AI is incredibly hard to program, pure and simple.

Yo, man, you know I'd be lying if I said your statement was false. Happens all the time. An idiot is smarter than those NPC allies. My point was that fact that they know not to Friendly Fire, and rarely miss what they're shooting at. My fault, shoulda specified.

Yeah: they;re strangely inconsistent in L4D: sometimes too efficient at shooting special infected, at other times, hopelessly stupid, mostly at very chaotic moments when they need to act properly.

Also keep in mind that a messy AI can put a lot of strain on a computer.

Doesn't matter how smart your friends are if you are looking at them through a slideshow.

Have you ever heard of the game "Creatures"?
Its like what spore tries to be today, a creature sim, where you have to grow and teach your very own race. And they can learn pretty much everything you want to teach them...over time of course, teaching their children what they know, the base of knowledge rises every generation.

I heard that the RAF tried them in their simulators, and in a mere 360 generations (one lasting about a day or two) they where able to shoot down even the most elite Pilots of the RAF...so much for "stupid, nonexistant AI".
I do agree there might be no AI behind it, but the routine to progress that must be pretty impressive<.<

because AI is not actually AI.

Untrue. Intelligence is (at it's most basic) the ability to process multiple stimuli and formulate a response. Modern AI can do this. The sprites in Wolfenstein 3D could do this.

Yeah, but every fan is hoping for at least phonics lesson for them, if you take my meaning, with the DLC in a few days. Not likely happening though
