Never played KOTR, but Mass Effect, I completely agree. Some of the best AI work I've seen, and useful, but I'll still kill them myself if I hear 'not now, Sheperd!' one more time.Irridium said:dude, scripting AI is really difficult.
In recent memory the only games I played where the friendly AI was bearable was in Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic
I'd have to disagree on L4D: the number of times I've been pinned by a hunter and being mauled by a large horde only to have an AI survivor walk towards me backwards, stand next to me for a few seconds, before turning around to try to free me, instead of shooting stuff off me as any sensible player would do.Smurfy 0151 said:Never played KOTR, but Mass Effect, I completely agree. The AI in Left 4 Dead is decent as well, if I must add something. Smart enough to point out where the big baddies are, yet still dumb enough to have a pecking order as to who is going to save YOUR LIFE! Any L4D fans in here will know what I'm talking about.

You don't want AI that does everything for you, but you also don't want AI that runs right into the middle of a firefight that has no idea what he's doing. This is extremely hard to program and rarely done right. Just give the developers some time and they should get better.
Sliiight disagree on the Mass Effect part. I find that they rarely go out of their way to independently change their position to be able to fire at enemies, nor do they actively seek cover if they are under heavy fire. But if they do move themselves, you can bet your biotic implants on them running in front of you.Irridium said:dude, scripting AI is really difficult.

Yeah, KOTOR was more or less the same, it was made by the same developers, and used the same 3 party system, and the AI actively fought and didn't need much commanding, the main differance was that KOTOR is set in the star wars universe and had a better inventory systemSmurfy 0151 said:Never played KOTR, but Mass Effect, I completely agree. Yeah, thats happened to me a few times, especially on the harder difficulties, but I haven't run into that problem a lot, I have, but it was rare for me, although I did issue commands every second or so.Rhayn said:Sliiight disagree on the Mass Effect part. For example. Today I was playing the DLC-world, and I'm in one of those fusion torch-houses. There's a sniper across the room. Garrus stands still in front of the entrance. Gets hit once. Almost dies. He stands still. He gets hit the second time. He dies. I use Unity. He stands still. Dies.
But yeah. What goes without saying is that I'm an idiot for not using the squad commands. But still, those little things that would make it so much more enjoyable. I don't really care if they get in my way to be honest, but they could at least do more than watch me fight off Batarians.
It's however not often that I find the allies to be more than bullet magnets or punching bags. It is not often that I randomly get an XP gain and money without me killing something myself. Mass Effect AI may be skirting the border of bearable, but I could do without them, I think.
Because AI is incredibly hard to program, pure and simple.crazyhaircut94 said:Now why is it this way? Why are most AI this pathetic?
Yo, man, you know I'd be lying if I said your statement was false. Happens all the time. An idiot is smarter than those NPC allies. My point was that fact that they know not to Friendly Fire, and rarely miss what they're shooting at. My fault, shoulda specified.whyarecarrots said:I'd have to disagree on L4D: the number of times I've been pinned by a hunter and being mauled by a large horde only to have an AI survivor walk towards me backwards, stand next to me for a few seconds, before turning around to try to free me, instead of shooting stuff off me as any sensible player would do.Smurfy 0151 said:Never played KOTR, but Mass Effect, I completely agree. Ok, maybe a minor irritation rather than a major flaw, but still intensely annoying when it happens in a tight vs game (and please don't say 'you should be playing with friends': it's rare that there are 4 of us that want/have time to play a game at the same time, and (rage-)quitters do happen*)

Yeah: they;re strangely inconsistent in L4D: sometimes too efficient at shooting special infected, at other times, hopelessly stupid, mostly at very chaotic moments when they need to act properly.Smurfy 0151 said:Yo, man, you know I'd be lying if I said your statement was false. Yes, what is it?JokerGrin said:It's pretty irritating, but I just accept bad AI as a given. I'd be incredible worried if AI got to a point where it could actually think like a human. Hello Skynet!
Untrue. Intelligence is (at it's most basic) the ability to process multiple stimuli and formulate a response. Modern AI can do this. The sprites in Wolfenstein 3D could do this.thiosk said:because AI is not actually AI.
there is no I in it.
Yeah, but every fan is hoping for at least phonics lesson for them, if you take my meaning, with the DLC in a few days. Not likely happening thoughwhyarecarrots said:Yeah: they;re strangely inconsistent in L4D: sometimes too efficient at shooting special infected, at other times, hopelessly stupid, mostly at very chaotic moments when they need to act properly.Smurfy 0151 said:Yo, man, you know I'd be lying if I said your statement was false.
