It's not always about money. There are a whole bunch of reasons. Some people really don't like each other for a start...
In before "war, war never changes" peoples. War won't ever stop because we'll always want what someone else has, whoever that someone else might be. Plus you guys treat your military like we in the UK treat our NHS, some sacred cow that we must show off about, and what's the point of a military if you don't use it?

Someone getting blown up half a world away is more entertaining(to the masses) than have a news article on a town installing new speed bumps.

Well, theoretically if some (probably nuclear) war destroys all life, than war as we know it won't happen for millions of years. That's bad, however.
I think that if some form of government could be devised in which career politicians are incapable of existence and that form of government became universal, war would probably cease. However, this will realistically never ever happen.

So you elected Obama for the money...? And Iraq and Afganistan are more like money pits than cash cows, even if oil was a misguided motive in Iraq...Merteg said:

Anyway, we're doing a horrible job in Afganistan. We shouldn't just kill all of them, we need to have more missionaries and diplomats. For every one we kill, ten of his family members will hate us.
