I have put all my components together with the help of my dad, we got a DVI cable and plugged it into the monitor, switched it on, and nothing happened apart from the fans working, the disc drive working and the graphics card making a loud beeping noise. What's happenening? :(

Did you connect the 6/8 pin power connectors to the video card?

I had the same problem not too long ago. Make sure the processor has power from the PSU. It's a little power slot on the motherboard I missed.

If in doubt

Read the Fucking manual!
Most of the parts are second-hand and didn't come with manuals.

Video card is probably dead, or not getting enough power.

Find out what mother board you have and then look up what a long beep coming from it means.

Then fix it.

Edit: for me it was overheating, make sure your heatsink is on properly, (although it should turn on really for a bit and then break your processor instead of not turn on at all if it isn't cooled right)

You installed all the drivers?

I can't install the drivers when the computer will not work, can i? Do i just put the disc in and then it will install itself, or do you have to use the monitor for it, because the monitor doesn't work.

Well, to me, (I'm no expert.) the beep, if short and fairly quiet, could just be the system POSTing. If it's more drawn out, it's probably an error tone. As others have said, check the graphics card.

Try plugging the monitor into the motherboard instead, for a while, if it has the appropriate port for it, then you can check it's not another component also breaking.

is this your first time setting it up? I mean, you haven't installed windows yet?
Are you using windows XP? IF so, I have a solution for you.

First, see if you can use VGA ( Sorry, took me a minute to remember the name) instead of DVI. I don't know why it would work, but it may work so you can see what you're doing.

Aside from reading all the manuals, make sure everything is connected, make sure you cooling fan is cooling your CPU. See if you can find out what that beep is.

Now, if you are doing a fresh install with windows xp, I have more advice for you. So let me know.

The beeps might be telling you what is wrong. If you have a different class processor, try looking up on google what the beeps might mean instead (such as, if it wouldn't classify as IBM, then try googling: (processor type here) error beep codes

Good luck

Read the manual, if in doubt, take it to an expert.

I get this with bikes, lots of people brings me bikes with various problems they can't figure out. It's usually something that's very simple to fix, provided you know what it is to begin with.

It might be something very simple, but £20 for a tech guy to look at it is better than a £100 burnt out graohics card...

If it doesn't give you a beep error on the POST test then you most likely have a broken video card. I'm assuming you can't see the BIOS when you boot-up? Have you tried swapping video cards for one that you know is functioning? Have you checked all of the power cables? You mentioned second hand hardware...are you certain everything is functional?

Do you know anybody in the real world that fixes computers..someone you can bribe with whiskey?
