Why Would Someone Do This?

Our school is considered one of the "good" schools in the community. We are also considered the "preps", even though a lot of complete d-bags attend our school.

Anyways, last Thursday, our school installed some concrete picnic tables outside so the students could have a place to eat, as they noticed how crowded it was getting inside. They also wanted to get us outside with the nice weather coming up. That's a nice thought, right? Well, the tables lasted through Friday. On Monday morning, we come to school to find that every single one of the CONCRETE tables has been broken. They've either been taken apart or smashed.

We were discussing this in French class, and something they said surprised me immensely. My class blamed the SCHOOL for the broken tables because they said that the school should have known that someone was going to come along and smash them up. ....WHAT?

To me, that makes no sense. Our class was basically saying that our school can never upgrade anything, or put anything remotly breakable around, because someone will come and smash it. How ridiculous is that? So much for the "good" school.

So, what would be the reason for this? Why would someone come and break concrete tables, and why would my class blame our school? What do you believe they are thinking? Do you agree?

**From what I've heard, a few of the kids responsible for this don't even GO to our school. They wouldn't have even been there to see the reactions.

People, especially teenagers, like to create chaos. They feel good about doing it and "sticking it to the man". It's sad that those are the thought that run through the majority, but you can't change what people think.

Maybe they just wanted to know if they could punch through a concrete table. Oh, and as to those who actually broke the table, they were just stupid jerks.

How much concrete did they break through?

At the moment I'm just seeing it as quite an impressive feat.

Some people are just stupid. If they see something they think they can break they do it. It's not the school's fault at all. This just shows what happens when you try to do something good.

Honestly, it was pretty impressive. I think there were six tables in general. They were round, and reasonably thick. I was thinking they used a sledge hammer or something. But, they could have always used cooperation and just picked them up and dropped them. (At least they exhibited some sort of good quality- working together.)

But that still makes them cooperating jerks.

I agree with you're classmates. It was inevitable that they would be broken, you're school just wasted taxpayers money. They should have bought tables which could be taken inside.

Mindless vandolism is still mindless.

Unfortunately Children (I.E under 18's) can be very mindless...In fact ANYONE can be very mindless. I dont see the point to it.

The real shame? I live near a railway station. Over the Track is a road bridge, which is covered in graffiti (Mainly "Bollocks waz ere y2k9" etc) - Someone then skillfully sprayed the heath ledger joker's face on the bridge.

3 weeks later the council came out and painted over the joker, But left the stupid scrawl.

*sigh*

Some people are asshats, they like to destroy, or make people's lives as miserable as possible. Maybe because they have problems we don't know about, or they like to be complete morons.

These people either end up in jail or the lowest paying job our society has to offer. There is justice, it just takes a while to catch up.

My school has concrete tables too but they're cemented into the ground, I'm not sure why your school didn't take that approach.

Preps & jocks are automatically deemed douchebags where I grew up.

The damage was probably costly. The school should interrogate students with anger management problems & invest in some secutiry cameras. I went to highschool 10 years ago & we had security cameras installed, often hidden ones, but none in the bathrooms. That was the only place you could vandalize.

Our school does have security cameras. In fact, they caught two kids stealing a teacher's iPod two years ago. (Real nice, right? That teacher actually TAUGHT the kids. That must have been awkward for the rest of the year.) Unfortuantly, they never found the iPod, so the kids weren't punished, even though they HAD them on tape.

I think we only have cameras in the hallways though. As demonstrated above, they aren't fool proof, either.

*sigh* I can't wait to get out of this school.

Teenagers are already incredibly impulsive, give them something to smash to create drama and some sort of useless rivalry to aim it at and there's a good chance someone will break something.

That doesn't mean it's the school's fault of course, those kids are %100 responsible. I really can't fathom why someone would think it's a good idea besides the aforementioned insane thinking.

The same reason people troll. Some simply cannot resist the urge to anonymously sow chaos and discord. Sad but often the case.

I suppose the school could be partly to blame for placing expencive pieces in a nonsecured area.

My school woud have made the whole student body suffer by forcing us to sit in an assembly for 2 hours, reading a list of rules & reprimands, & then they'd probably bring back the security guards & metal detectors we had installed after 3 consecutive phoney bomb scares this guy kept using to prevent our school from participating in football events with other schools.

As a teacher this really pisses me off, So the school decided to make a better enviroment and then some kids go and smash it up, makes me wonder why we even bother sometimes.

I hope any kids on here who are still at school understand that its your parents who have to pay for this sort of thing through taxes you know. So when you set off a fire alarm, not only is that fire engine not there it costs the school money. Same for any other equipment or resources.

Its even more annoying when you get parents complaining that the facilities are not good enough, yeah because we had to spend money on fixing a broken computer/window (insert other resource here) or because some kid thought it was cool to lean back on a chair and break it, again that has to be payed for or would you rather sit on the floor...
