Wow, a lot of "the glass is half-empty" types in this thread. Yeah I'll grant that a lot of the games coming out are sequels, but if you look at the best of the best, companies like Bioware and Bethesda rarely if ever disappoint (yeah I know plenty of you will say Oblivion wasn't as good as Morrowind but I loved it). I certainly have high hopes for this year and think it certainly could be the best year in gaming.

I guess what's really amazing to me his how much people can love a game and then clamor years and years for more, then when they finally DO get a sequel they go all "meh it's gonna suck." I can understand this given dissapointing occurrences like Deus Ex: Invisible War, but come on, there's no reason to lose hope and make judgments BEFORE THE GAMES EVEN COME OUT!
Well I think the thing about sequels is there won't be any really NEW experiences, though they will be REFINED experiences. That's nice, but not as nice as new IPs doing new things.

But since the Great Recession and the rising cost of video games people seem to be a lot more afraid of taking risks with new IPs. Not terrified, some new IPs, but not many hugely significant ones.

Yes a lot of games are sequels. But some of those games are designed to be sequels and others are just too good to be one time hits. Mass Effect is supposed to be a trilogy, Crysis too. What do you expect from The Elder Scrolls? A reboot? Of a game with such a tradition and lore? Also Arkham City? Did you play AA? Ending begged for a sequel. And I don't think anyone will be complaining about another great Batman game. Bioshock Infinite...well maybe that one shouldn't be called Bioshock. Dragon Age 2: just like every great RPG with great made up world it deserves to be explored deeper. Deus Ex HR: we waited too long for another one and now you're complaining about sequels. That's kinda sad. Assassin's Creed is another one designed as a series of video games. PC gamers are yet to get their hands on Brotherhood. I could go on all night but seriously, what's the point. All of the sequels deserve to be sequels (with the exception of Bioshock Infinite and it's talking protagonist) and most of you love their predecessors.

Oh look, here come the "hur hur sequels = cash-ins = suck" crowd.

Super Mario 3 was a sequel. Super Metroid was a sequel. Half Life 2 was a sequel. Metal Gear Solid 4 (or 3, or 2, take your pick) was a sequel. Resident Evil 4, Mass Effect 2, Majora's Mask, Uncharted 2, Persona 4, and so on? Sequels.

You go ahead and crap on those titles for being sequels. See how well that goes.

OT: This year definitely looks better than most; even though there are a handful of people who say that every year, this one looks like it will break my bank.

It looks to be better than last year, but, at the same time, the only new console device coming out is a 3DS and possibly a new PSP of some variety. Nothing else has been announced yet (to my knowledge) and no major innovations are being made. Just more games and a couple new handhelds. To me, just another year.

Thats unfair to say. We don't know what the future holds. It's all opinion anyway. Sure there are a few games I'm looking forward to. Much more then the passed few years. Brink, Portal 2, Mass Effect 3. Then there are titles that Im not a fan of or just didn't get into but I know are popular.

I would say it's a good year for gaming but not the greaest.
