In all honesty, Google went from an internet search program to owning YouTube, a site used by millions, creating a browser that rivals its competition's and even a program for phones which seems to be winning over victims of the i phone 4 as seen with the transfer to the Samsung Galaxy.

This company is taking on Apple and Microsoft and is surprisingly coming up ahead.

Oh they own quite alot more then YouTube, they are buying companies on a weekly basis.
They pretty much own the internet(the list of their services is just to large), now they have their own browser, their phone and online shop, they are making an OS and they want to ship it with their very own laptop/pc, aiming to replace all software needs with online services.

Quite honestly they are becoming scarily big and while their business practices aren't from the Boby Kotick booklet of evil deeds it will be catastrophic when that one day changes.

Don't think any single company should get this big, but then alot of others would need to be cut down to size aswell.

It's a bad day when a company that has vehicles roaming the streets "accidentily" storing your wireless web search details gets that big.

On the plus side if they're pressuring Apple I'm all for it.

The real question is, Would it be a bad thing?

I mean, I've seen how they treat their employees.
I for one will be welcoming our new benevolent dictators.

I don't think they will want to rule the world, because then you have to deal with the people. Ruling the media... maybe, ruling technology and replacing Microsoft in our lifetimes, probably.

That one? Scary stuff.

The whole China situation, Scientology side taking (should have been uninvolved realistically speaking) and Google Buzz fiasco has me a bit worried about our whether our ever present, silent overlords are truely benevolent.

Knowledge is power, guard it well.

p.s Google if you are listening (not that I'm implying you are) I in no way, shape or form dissent so please don't disappear me.

If somebody would kindly set fire to everyone working at Facebook HQ and bury their corpses deep under a polar wasteland then I think Google will have a certain chance of ruling the world yes..

I think the difference between google and Microsoft is that google deals in information. I posted here before suggesting everyone go to see the sorted and collated information that google has on YOU right here http://www.google.com/history/?hl=en. If they weren't obligated to follow their motto of "don't be evil" I'd be worried that google will hold the position of Merovingian or Shadow Broker in the not-so-distant future. That being said, I still use all the most personal of google services because they are so awesome and free, and the allow me to do stuff like, share this fantastic voicemail with the world.

(I'm reasonably sure that this is a one way link, but if that link gives everyone access to my google account, would somebody please be so kind as to let me know?)

Eh, people need a good panic about nothing every now and then. Yes, google has alot of power, but then so does any big business.

Google pretty much controls the internet. They pretty much control every bit of easy-access information that arises. They can manipulate what we see and what we don't see as easily as by making web searches show some things over others, on Google, on YouTube, or on any other site under their control.

They've got us by the balls. But honestly, I don't think Google would ever abuse its power in any kind of negative way.

Dictators do not stay benevolent for long.
Ever.

Google doesn't really scare me. I used the net well before Google mattered, and I can make due without a lot of their services.

Are we including all unelected leaders of nations ever or just people who seized power militarily/politically?

Fixed it for you.

Hopefully all the competition they have at the moment will keep them from becoming a assholish monopoly for as long as possible.

I never said I was afraid of Google. I love that they're taking on Apple and the i phone. I bought a Galaxy S, but over the last 10 years Google has grown, A LOT. It's hard to believe.

I also forgot to mention they have Gmail as well but I think Windows Live might still hold that area. But with Android powered phones coming out that might change.

Hahaha...Well, I think some Mozilla lovers are gonna get annoyed. I use Chrome personally, just seems faster and more convenient at times.
