What would Google even do if they ruled the world? Force everyone to work for Google?

Because that would be awesome.

creating a browser that is better than its competition's
Fixed it for you.

Hopefully all the competition they have at the moment will keep them from becoming a assholish monopoly for as long as possible.
Hahaha...Well, I think some Mozilla lovers are gonna get annoyed. I use Chrome personally, just seems faster and more convenient at times.
Oh well.

The real question is, Would it be a bad thing?

I mean, I've seen how they treat their employees.
I for one will be welcoming our new benevolent dictators.
A benevolant dictator is still a dictator, and Hitler rose to power with an iron fist cloaked in the velvet glove as do most of them throughout history.

OT: I would be more concerned if they weren't just another corperation. Yes, they happen to be the only one that maintains such a presence in cyberspace, but for longer than I can remember this country has been owned and run by the corperations that can buy off senators, congressmen, judges, and presidential candidates. So what's one more player on the field? Google isn't any less evil than any other corperation out there, but I don't think they're any more evil either.

The lesser of two evils is still evil though, and cornerationscorperations(wow, what the hell happened to my typing there???) never act for the betterment of society, only their profit margins.

Dictators do not stay benevolent for long.
Ever.

Google doesn't really scare me. I used the net well before Google mattered, and I can make due without a lot of their services.
As much as I like Google at the moment, we mustn't forget Sir John Dalberg-Acton's famous words.

"All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority." - ref. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dalberg-Acton,_1st_Baron_Acton#Religion_and_writings | third paragraph.

Are you scared of Microsoft today? I'm not. Would I be scared of a greater Google? Probably not. Greater to the point of mass control, well that'd be a different story, and I think people would realise it and not simply drop tools and bow obediently.

The ants? Space ants?

But yeah, power corrupts. It is a bad thing. The thing is, I really do enjoy watching them take a chunk out of Apple, so it's hard to not feel dirty at the same time.

Monopolies are bad. Domination is bad. It will lead to bad things.

Unless the ants do it.

Well at least someone gets a bloody joke when they hear it.
I'm starting to think I could have just claimed they were intergalactic alien ants and people would have replied with "where's your proof you pro-fascist freedom hater".

Google will not rule the world. Businesses don't know how to do anything aside from run businesses. Ergo, they do not rule, but are filthy rich.

Dont you know? Google has a secret coalition with the rest of the other big names on the internet. First youtube etc, "fell", but secretly this is just a ploy. Google, or the "Local Organization for Lots of Internets", (or LOLI) plan to own the internet as one big business venture. Soon individual websites such as 4chan, i can haz cheezburger, etc will "fall" too. You have been warned. P.S the chairman of LOLI is SKELETOR...

In all honesty, Google went from an internet search program to owning YouTube, a site used by millions, creating a browser that rivals its competition's and even a program for phones which seems to be winning over victims of the i phone 4 as seen with the transfer to the Samsung Galaxy.

This company is taking on Apple and Microsoft and is surprisingly coming up ahead.

What's next? 0_0
In short the answer is "no".

In more detail, the US goverment will prevent it in the USA and as long as we remain the dominant global market/economy it's going to limit the amount of power a group can assemble this way by simply catering to other countries with looser laws.

I'd remind people that Ted Turner tried to buy up a load of media companies and pretty much declare himself the lord of all information on planet earth. The goverment stepped in to prevent this. If Google, or any of these mergers, started to become that powerful or did away with all the competition the goverment would also step in and break them up.

That said, we might see Google having it's own country before too long. It's an off chance, but keep in mind that the whole "Egyptian Revolution" was largely started/coordinated by a 30 year old Google executive. Right now he seems to be the closest thing to a definitive leader the revolutionaries have (which is really, really scary). If the Islamics don't wind up taking over the country due to being the largest coordinated group (even if not an actual majority) I expect this guy is liable to be on any kind of a democratic ballot and probably has a chance of winning. Just think... Google with The Cradle Of Civilization, a true symbol for the information age. :)

Did you know that... 1 Google search takes the same amount of energy of a light bulb for 1 second

Interesting Fact: All of the Google searches use the same amount of energy that Los Vegas during night time
