Homeworld was amazing, but has more of a cult following than anything else, which is a shame.

C&C was fun for hacking, but the game itself was... Eh. It was a great game, until Total Annihilation came out and I had something to compare it to.

And then the C&C 3(I think) came out with Supreme Commander... The nukes man... The nukes.

Dawn of War is one of my favourites at the moment...

Don't get the fuss about Starcraft to be honest. Command and Conquer and Age of Empires have always been great in my eyes. Sins of a Solar Empire is always a good one to at least try. It's quite a taste driven game though, given its relative slowness compared to other RTSs.

These whole "Will anything ever beat these old game" threads are stupid anyway, everyone likes what they like. It's just a subtle way of saying "I like these games best and if you don't you're wrong."

Dune: The battle for Arrakis on Sega Genesis was THE stuff back when it came out, trust me. Ah good old devastaters... And the music was awesome. Ofcourse the controls sucked, but what exactly did you expect.

I get a bit frustrated that a lot of RTS missions/multiplayer games (C 'n C can be notorious for this) ends up being the guy who can make the most tanks in the space of 10 mins and steamrolling them from one side of the map to the other...as Yahtzee pointed out in Halo Wars.

Generally speaking you are gonna need a big army in some levels but I've had enemy bases subjugated within moments of a small strike team sneaking around the back, smashing down the wall and hitting the lights (i.e. getting rid of powerplants)

OT: I haven't come across any decent RTS titles as of late however but I've more of a penchant for turn based ones such as Valkyria Chronicles, R-Type Tactics and Jagged Alliance where I feel the strategy element has less pressure over your head and forces you to think deeply about your next move

Really i didn't like them that much. I did really enjoy C&C3 and Starcraft 2 beta. But I preferred BFME and Rise of nations to those games. Personal preference really.

Dawn of War, Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology are my favorite RTS games. The former because of the periods of both hectic and tactical style gameplay and the brutal art style while the latter two was just plain simple to learn hard to master gameplay with great charm from it's pleasant graphics and (more so in the case of AoM) soundtrack.

Total War, while a top strategy game series is not an RTS, it's RTT (real-time tactics)

The early 90s/late 80s, back when noone heard of a "Pentium". But i guess there's just a huge chunk of nostalgia in that for me so i'm not exactly objective (though the new Dune games rocked from my point of view), either that or i just like the Harkonnen too much.
In recent news i heard of a game called "achron" an RTS in development by two guys that integrates time travel as a feature, sounds pretty awesome to me.

In my opinion Company of Heroes is the finest RTS currently on the market, despite Relics repeated attempts to destroy it with its insane balance team.

If Warcraft IV would come out, it would sound the victory bells before the demos would even be released.

That, my friends, is a fact.
This.

Well that depends on what you enjoy. 'Most' people say (or said, some of them are getting pretty old and so are the gamers who played it) the best RTS games are StarCraft, Red Alert and Age of Empires II. Ofcourse that doesn't mean there aren't lots of other enjoyable ones. People love Homeworld, Dawn of War, Total War, WarCraft and other C&C and Age of games etc.

That said, my opinion: better? I don't know. What made some of the old classics great was because the balance is just very good and history has shown that getting good balance is kind of hard.

My top 3 is:
1 AoE2 (yep)
2 Red Alert 2
3 Homeworld 2
Never was much of a StarCraft fan, and I just think RA2 is more fun than the prequel.

Well dawn of war 1 was quite good until the add-ons. The add-ons, even though kind of fun, just made it massively unbalanced.

Age of empires has always been pretty good, supreme commander was good if a bit slow. I enjoyed company of heroes aswell. Empire at war had it's moments but did suffer from a very small on screen population cap. C&C4 was abysmal, I don't know what they were thinking with that. So disappointing.

RTS does seem to be falling behind a bit in comparison to other genres, in my opinion anyway. Which is a shame because it's always been one of my favourite genres.

EDIT: forgot to mention, my favourite of all time has be total anihilation. If you haven't played it it's well worth at least trying it out.

Yes i think there was a video here somewhere, but I only saw it after a friend mentioned the game to me. And it either in Beta or Alpha I think. It will take some while for it to get released.

World in Conflict was one I really enjoyed, but I'll always have fond memories of C&C and Total Annihilation. Dawn of War was really fun as far as RTS's go too, but as I suck arse thru a straw when it somes to RTS, Ive not played a great deal of them since the C&C days. My bro however loves SC and WC3 DOTA (Whatever that is???)
