I recently upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon HD 4870 and i'm thinking about buying Crysis: Warhead, but i'm pretty new to computer gaming so I want to know if it is enough to run the game.

4...4...8...70....

Dude, you have the motherfucking computer god of graphics. You will be able to pump that baby on maximum!

Seriously, the 4870 is by far the GFX card of 2008. Makes my massive 9800GX2 erection feel like a rip off.

Thanks for the help. This is my first modern computer, and i'm so used to to having the slowest computer out of anyone I know, that it almost seems unreal to actually have a computer that can handle high quality games.

You can't handle modern games, you can devour them.

You are repeatedly luring me away from my 8800GTXs and leading me towards the 9800GX2s...... Should I consider making the change?

Don't ask me, look at the benchmarks.

I got an 8800Gt because they are cheap, can run Crysis on high, and perform almost as well as the 9800. Im an NVidia man so I know nothing about ATi.

If you have 600 bucks and you want a monster card that is pretty much on par with the 4870...yes...yes you should. I got one and i couldn't be any happier, this brick that eats babies as an alternative power source will make your PC a very happy gaming PC.

Mine came with my rig when i ordered all the parts. I think I payed 300 instead of the 600 but I was buying through a local shop so I got a good deal. I could not be happier, my last card was a Radeon 9250...yea...my last comp was like 6 years old. So I am happy that this new rig obliterates games, makes crysis my *****, and eats children as it has no soul.

Okay, i'm running-

Pentium 4 3.5ghz
1 GB Ram
ATI Radeon x300 SE

Yes, thats right, my graphics card sucks ass. Heres my question- if I update my graphics card, can I teach my computer to rape newer games in the ass? Or is a completly new system required?

If you need more information, tell me how to get it. Lets assume i'm clueless- because I am.

Get a better processor first. Without a dual core, you're screwed. Period.

You don't need a core2duo, just get any dual core if you want to be a minimalist.

So I need to buy a new rig, then? It was to my understanding the processor was the one thing you couldn't upgrade.

No, you can replace the processor as long as it is the same socket size. If it isn't the same size then I guess you'll need a new motherboard, and you'll need parts compatible with that motherboard, because...ya know, it's the motherboard. If it doesn't work with your motherboard, it doesn't work.

Actually, your wrong.

A 3.5 single core will run most, if not all modern games fine. It might struggle with CPU intensive games, but otherwise as long as it's paired with a good GPU and isn't choked by ram, there's no reason why he won't be fine.

Actually, the GTX 280 is the fastest single-GPU card currently available. The price:performance ratio doesn't really make it feasible unless you have cash to burn, and it takes tons of power, but it's an awesome card despite all that. There are faster cards available, like the Radeon HD 4870 X2, but those are also dual-GPU cards that run in SLI or Crossfire mode, generate more heat, take more power, and don't have quite as good driver support (as you're limited by SLI/Crossfire support for specific games and thus may not see any improvement over single-GPU cards).

As for CPUs, most modern games these days do take advantage of multi-threading, but fast clock speed and cache size still have the greatest effect on performance. Don't downplay the importance of a dual-core processor over a single-core one, but it's true that the GPU is going to have a way bigger impact on how smoothly your games run, especially at higher resolutions (i.e. 1650x1080 or above).

2 GB of DDR2 RAM, preferably DDR2 800, is pretty much a requirement these days for gaming as many games use over 1 GB. However, even fairly low-end RAM won't effect average framerates in most cases (if it does, it won't be in a very significant way) and will have the biggest impact on load times and stutters during gameplay.
