Windows 8, Tablets Blamed For Record Drop In PC Sales

I'll admit, I did avoid buying computers from sites that forced Win8 as the OS. Not because I hate it as an OS, but just because I hate it as a desktop OS (it's a great Tablet OS). So it may be the push for the OS to be on desktops moreso than its existence on tablets. And to think, all microsoft really had to do was provide a win7 mode like they've done with pretty much every OS in the past, ever. I work with a lot of virtual machines all day and win8 makes me want to punch a kitten in the face every time it fails to capture keyboard commands (because, of course, virtual machines have trouble with that and navigating win8 with a mouse can be a little like performing surgery with a hammer).

The article says that "Obviously Apple isn't affected by the introduction of Windows 8, so what gives?". The author may not be familiar with the number of people that instal windows OSs on apple computers for a myriad of reasons.

So yes, poor windows OS choices can impact apple sales. But no, not as much as mentioned.

Tablets have become a completely legitimate media solution. If you don't play resource demanding video games or use hi-tech video editing software than tablets are a cheap and convenient solution that is only getting better. I'd be interested in seeing how tablets have really done overall. Honestly, if I weren't a gamer then I'd invest in tablets all day long. As is though, I'm stuck with my massive desktop.

No...in fact it's one of the best Windows releases I've ever encountered (at least from a stability standpoint). People are just mad that it has a new start menu and don't want to adjust to something slightly different (even though it's easily replaceable).
That's right if I buy a product I don't want to be forced to adjust to things I don't like. Actually I don't like to be forced to anything, which is exactly what Microsoft is doing by not making and option to boot directly to the standard desktop. I know that there are non-offical ways to get Win8 to do that but I fucking won't support that kind of attitude of a software developer ignoring something like this after so many people have requested it.

Besides the design practically screams HIPSTER!

You do know that it's just a different start menu, right? The desktop hasn't gone anywhere. At all.

I've read from different sources repeatedly(of course I didn't even try it myself because it looks like shit) that Win8 boots first on the Metro surface, I didn't say that the desktop is gone. Just that the first thing you see after startup is Metro. Hell there are even sites on the internet dedicated to conquering this problem. So, am I not right?

You're not wrong - I simply assumed you were misinformed as you seem to suggest there is some sort of major problem. If you don't want to open a program when you first boot in - click to the desktop. How is that even an issue? I honestly can't get my head around it.

That's it, you have to click to the desktop every single time you start your pc. To me, and many other people it seems, that's annoying. If I decided to never use Metro and just use the desktop than I'd still have to click it away every time. I honestly can't see a reason why Microsoft wouldn't build in an option so anyone would be satisfied.
That's of course not my only problem with Win8 I just mentioned it as an example why it feels to me that Microsoft is shoving it's new design down my throat instead of giving options.

I assume the reasoning behind it is when you turn on a computer, you're probably going to open something, and that's where most people are going to open something from. MS probably didn't consider an option to disable that necessary. As for why they didn't leave an option to get rid of the thing entirely and revert to the old start menu, I think they worked out a better alternative and just wanted people to move on and be done with it. There is absolutely no way they can please everybody...they could leave it in until windows 12 and people will complain when they take it out of 13. I mean people complained when they changed it from the pop out style folders to the expanding downward style, albeit not quite as much as this time. I think they just want to get it out of the way now so they can focus on something better.

And I doubt that it never occurred to them that people would hate precisely that.

Jup that's also what I assuemed to be the reason. The problem is just that so many people don't think it's better. Still I read that it actually sold pretty well, which is no wonder with the flood of advertisement, people just buying the newest version without even looking at it beforehand and the new facebook/dubstep/or whatever generation totally digging this kind of design. It definitely will be the last Windows I bought if the comming ones are like this. *Sigh* I know I'm getting too emotional over this.

It isn't bad once you spend a few minutes with it. When I first saw footage of it I couldn't find enough palms for my face but after trying it it's a lot quicker than the start menu once you've got your most used programs pinned in the right place.
