It's great that Windows XP is still going strong 10 years on, but I really like Windows 7. It's great for gaming (Since I can use DX10/11), easy to use, and it has 64bit support so I can use more than 3Gb of RAM (great since a lot of new computers ship with 4).

I hope they fix this stupid mistake soon.

I hope the guys writing Ubuntu get right on this, release an FOSS, working countdown timer for XP and suggest out that maybe it'd be worth giving linux a try since even Microsoft can't get their software to support their own operating system.
You're...not going to want the latest Ubuntu. Without spoilers from the beta (which is a beta after all) the new interface is made of horror and a fair amount of fail.
As it is now I'm still using 10.04 LTS since I'm a newbie. I believe you completely though, I think some of the UI design is going in a bad direction: Ubuntu had a distinct, African feel to it, which at first I hated... for about an hour. After that I thought it had a stronger brand feel to it than OS X or XP (the elephant skin texture I think is one of the best choices of packaged bgs for an OS I've ever seen). Ever since then much of it feels like a dilution.
The next release of Ubuntu, which is still in development, is using a completely new UI package so there are a lot of changes. It's a controversial move, but we'll see how it pans out.

It's says a lot about a company's Quality Assurance department when they don't at least double click the executable and see if something happens.

I've no problem with the project going in radical directions or courting controversy, but I do wish that there would be careful consideration of consistent branding. I know it sounds airy-fairy compared to say solid, well written code or excellent hardware support, but good design matters.

Window 7 was the best decision MS made this decade. It doesn't hog memory like Vista did (with Game Booster running, it takes up only about 400MB of RAM in the background of my PC as opposed to Vista's atrocious 1GB). It was a vast improvement over Vista and pushes 64-bit processing, and add in higher RAM allowances and a few nifty things like the slice tool and rotating background selection and you have a fairly good OS. Also, DX11 support.

Give up on XP already - it's a decade old and it's infrastructure was never built to be secure on the internet, which is why it relied so heavily on antiviruses. Hell, Win7 is <url=http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10444561-245.html>more heavily secured than even Macs.

Halvar Flake, head of research and CEO of Zynamics: "General state of affairs: Vista/Win7 has more extensive countermeasures against attacks and a codebase with presumably fewer security issues.

Rich Mogull, CEO, Securosis: Microsoft has done more in terms of its inherent security features than Apple has in the operating system.

Charlie Miller, a principal analyst at consultancy Independent Security Evaluators: Technologically speaking, PCs are a little more secure than Macs. Macs have a larger attack surface out of the box (Flash, Java, support for a million file formats, etc.) and lack some anti-exploitation technologies found in PCs like full ASLR [Address Space Layout Randomization]. This means Macs have more vulnerabilities and it's easier to turn a vulnerability into an exploit on the platform.

Tyler Reguly, senior security research engineer, nCircle: If you believe the hype and the flashy commercials the answer would be Mac. But if you take a look at the two platforms, and the mindsets of the companies behind them then the PC wins hands down. If you compare Windows 7 to Snow Leopard, then the simple winner is Windows 7. Microsoft brought in teams of security professionals to look at their code and find problems leading to a more secure product while Apple is often criticized for ignoring issues.

And what games aren't you guys able to play on Win7? It has excellent backward compatibility and there's a thing called DOSBOX.

Of course good design matters. Good user interface design is what puts computers in people's homes rather than in CS labs. I would describe myself as very proficient with computers, but I would be hard pressed to operate one successfully without a good GUI.

Typical Microsoft fail.

At first I thought it was an unintended glitch, but no, I saw where they listed the supported OS', and its not there. That's really pathetic.

So when countdown is up, how many of those XP users do you think will switch to Mac?

I upgraded to 7 a week ago and I would recommend it to anyone really. I was sceptical at first, sobbing while holding my copy of XP dear while I navigated the flashy new windows 7 menus, finding it impossible to find shit, but I am convinced now.

Windows 7: "I dont need that driver CD. I just installed all the drivers you need while you werent looking."
Me: "Neat."

Lets compare that to XP.

Windows XP: "Nope, not gonna work son. I dont want that driver."
Me: "But... Why? Can you give me an error or something to work with?"
Windows XP: "Look son, its not you, its me. I know these drivers should work flawlessly. But I dont feel like it today."
Me: "This is getting ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason in the universe for these drivers not to work."
Windows XP: "U mad bro?"
Me: *Now banging hands on table, screaming with rage* "WORK YOU PIECE OF SHIT! WHAT THE FUCK!"
Windows XP: "....." *Bluescreen*
Really? Because in my case it was closer to:
Me: *working on the photoshop*
Windows XP: *gasp* *pant* Can't... hold... out... much... longer!
Me: D: Come on! Hold out! Hold out!
Windows XP: *cough* Sorry... *spontaneously shuts down*
Me: D8 NOOOOO! I FORGOT TO SAVE!!!

And that poor computer couldn't be turned back on for like... half an hour or so...

Not many, I'm sure. A few? Probably. But not as many as will upgrade to Windows 7.

I personally plan on upgrading to Windows 7 when I purchase a new PC, some months (or perhaps a year or so) after I find myself a job after my upcoming graduation.

Hopefully I can find a job in this crap economy.

We can still use Windows XP can't we? Even after the date? Or are they seriously going to send a death code into our systems to kill XP :p

Whatever it is, I'll tell you this: you can have my Windows XP when you pry it from my cold, dead hands! Or, you know, on April 7, 2014. Whichever comes first.

Given that it's Microsoft I wouldn't put them past the death-code thing.

Honestly though, you'll probably still be able to use it, but you will get slowly forced off when they start to put out the new versions of their software that require Windows 7 or higher.

Of course you will be able to use it, it just won`t receive any updates and there will be fewer programs/games with windows xp support.
Today i got a chance to use a laptop with XP, and it quickly reminded me how annoying it was, a game crashed and there was no way to get out of that black screen.

So, what exactly happens when they terminate their support? Will there simply be no more updates and customer support? Will a kill-switch be activated, preventing the system from working? Or will a Microsoft operative show up at my house to take away my computer and kill me with windows-shaped shurikens? I MUST KNOW!

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, I just saw the post before mine. I'll still leave this here so anyone can tell me if a Microsoft operative will indeed show up...

That's just when they stop support, it will still work, but it won't get updates, so screw 'em. I'll keep using XP on my desktop. My primary computer is a laptop with 7, which I love, but I remain loyal. My dad has been using XP for so long now, he is part XP. I haven't updated my old computer for a while, still works.

So...they're going to stop providing service for the ONLY operating system that currently works and is completed?...so I'm gonna have to choose between the God Awful Vista...or the more recent Windows 7 that doesn't play most older games...Microsoft is just bending gamers over the table and giving us the good ol'one eyed snake because it will make us buy or switch to their newer products...Almost like how the Xbox is a fun console...yet it suffers from more accidents and crashes than my senile grandmother.

People's obsession with XP borders on ridiculousness. It's not THAT good. Windows 7 is fine. Upgrade to it.

I have some fond memories of XP back when it was all new and lovely but I prefer windows 7 in every god damn way
