my first gaming rig was an XP Pro machine I built freshman year of HS. I don't think I'll ever upgrade it, if for no other reason than old times' sake.

XP has not been properly supported since work on Vista began. MS will use every method to brute-force the users to buy their fermenting ****. Push the search engine: force Bing, limit internet security: make IE9 incompatible, games: make DX10 incompatible (though I don't notice much of a difference between 9 and 11,) there are more, but these are burned to my mind.

I may be using linux and hackintosh, or virtual OSX, in three years but not windows Vista or latter.

Meh. I'll be using XP until the end of time. Or until I buy a new computer. So, yeah. End of time.

Unless they want me to upgrade to 7 by giving me a free computer, because my current one can't even run the OS, let alone the stuff that needs it to run.

There are 2 reasons I switched to 7. The godawful tablet(as in tablet connected to a PC, not a tablet that is a PC as well) support (most full screen applications just couldn't start without uninstalling the driver) and frequent, seemingly random cases of BSOD. Later it turned out my GPU was the problem. Burned out completely several weeks after I turned in my final projects for university. I'm an architectural major, need at least a gaming-grade PC for uni. Windows 7 hid the problem, could have cost me a year.

The PC elitist with Windows XP are hypocrites. Windows 7 - 64 BIT is the shit.
There's only one problem I have with the 64 bit architecture. I love the 64 bit OS. It's so much smoother, but...

Nintendo needs to get off their asses and code 64 bit firmware for their USB adapter.

That's my problem. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, but it doesn't sound like it's a problem exclusive to Vista.

That's a pretty big fail there, Microsoft.
Go to 0:08. Spoiler tagged on the chance anyone around here doesn't know that GLaDOS ends up in a potato for quite a bit of the game.

The best part of this story is that you just can't make this sort of thing up. Like XP being declared crash proof during a press conference before being started up and going right to a BSoD. I don't root for these failures, but they can be kinds funny when they happen.

well I for one will be sad. Too many older games are not compatible or have issues with Windows 7 that I want xp to still run.
So bloody true. Max Payne is one such game, though some clever guy found a way to get it running on 7, not all will have this, and the more obscure the more likely they will go unfixed.

I didn't even realize XP was that old. I have been using until... last week, I think. It was very, very reliable.

My new rig has 7, though, and it haven't regretted it... yet.

Well.

That long until support is discontinued? I'd say that's pretty good, at least now I have a time frame for when to jump ship to a newer OS.

I specifically requested Windows XP instead of 7 or Vista because Vista doesn't like games in general from the things I hear and 7 is incompatible with many older games. Including Fallout 1 & 2 unless you do some techinical jiggery-pokery.

Still, I've heard that Virtual Machine thing works pretty good for when the time comes.

EDIT: I love how everyone is saying "The countdown is for showing that you have 2.96 years to upgrade to Windows 7. Completely skipping Vista along the way. Goes to show how poorly received that OS was. xD

It is longer than 1.76 years till 2014. We still have all of 2012 and 13. Did you mean 2.76?
No, I meant "random number" until 2014. It was a joke.

We can still use Windows XP can't we? Even after the date? Or are they seriously going to send a death code into our systems to kill XP :p
Sure. You can still use Windows 3.1 if you want, or DOS for that matter. You'll just be completely on your own with regards to any support matters, driver issues and so forth. But your WinXP install isn't going to spontaneously self-destruct or anything.

Been using 7/Vista for about two years, and haven't run into any gaming issues yet.

Upgrade, you old XP-geezers!

Shouldn't they at least stop selling it? My dad works IT at a school and he can (and does) still order new computers for them that use XP. It's kind of pathetic, but then so is the difference between 7's system requirements and how little it ought to take to run a reliable operating system.
