Wisdom Teeth

Okay, guys, I had my wisdom teeth taken out six days ago, and I feel like I have a million questions. The bottom ones still hurt (not dry sockets, they're not that bad). I'm still struggling to open my jaw (curse you, small mouth). And it's still kind of a chore to chew. Would you guys say this is still normal?

Anyway, how many of you have had your wisdom teeth taken out? Share your stories! (And by the way, how long did it take for the holes to close up completely?)

Since I, and many other people here, are actually doctors/dentists with years of experience, I'm going to go ahead and tell you you're fine. Don't worry about it. Pain after a week of this kind of procedure is perfectly normal....

Seriously, pick up the phone, and call your Dentist. This isn't a difficult thing to find out.

I appreciate it, but I just like hearing others' experience too. My doctor can tell me the same thing, but I like to know from what others went through. It's just kinda how I am.

Pudding and soup. Don't chew gulp it down. Don't suck (straws, cigarettes, etc. Sucking is like a guarantee to develop dry socket. Just take your pain meds as directed.

eh so far only one of my wisdom teeth have started to come though, i can imagine getting them taken out hurts alot considering you must have some pretty big holes in your mouth

Your gums* might be infected, but I just realized somethin... it was a long ass time ago I lost mine, I now recall having pain medication for the first week or two after the surgery. I want to say I didn't take them after a week. I know I had a bunch left over.

I've had my wisdom teeth come through, my top jaw has room for them, my bottom jaw doesn't, But I have the dentist with a passion, so I really don't want to have to go back to him. I also cracked a quarter of my tooth off on a Chinese takeaway last week, but it only hurts when something hits the exposed nerve, so I'll take the pain LIKE A MAN. I really, really hate dentists.

Edit: oh, and I have to ask, What are dry sockets?

Don't worry, I do too. I can handle surgery anywhere else except my mouth. Dentists scare the crud out of me.

It's when the blood clot doesn't form right or falls out too early where the wisdom tooth was removed. It basically exposes the bone and nerve underneath to the air, and I've heard the pain is just horrible. I had a friend that got one, and she said the pain shot up to her ear and eye too. I guess it's easy to fix, but it hurts like hell if it happens.

I think your problem is normal.
One time my friend Dave shows up at my house after getting his wisdom teeth out. He's a short, skinny kind of guy, and he's wearing this big knitted sweater. I opened the door and his face is so puffy he looks like he gained fifty pounds overnight. I almost started laughing.

Had all four taken out at the same time under general, woke up, ate, drank... a couple hours later and the anaesthetic wore off... and... nothing. There was no pain whatsoever, except some wooziness (sic - yeah, that's not pain... sorry) when I walked around a bit too quickly. Went to work the next Monday (op on Friday) and my supervisor called me a twat all day.

Granted, I was eating soup and liquified rice for a week and it took abour two for the voids to close.

Yes. It took a week or two for me to fully recover, but if they did a good job, it'll be a full recovery after then. I recommend pasta and apple sauce! Also ice cream, it's god for numbing up the stitching.

My expert advice is to place gobstoppers in the sockets. That will return your mouth to 100% utility.

You'd've thought so, but no. They erupted when I was sixteen and were left to grow for about seven years. When I looked at the X-rays at the dentist's I was almost horrified. All four were growing forward, pushing my teeth up and making my jaws more cramped than they already were.

When my sister was over (had her wisdom teeth out at 18 and was in a lot of pain for about a fortnight) shortly after she just looked as though she wanted to swing a bat at my mouth.

Holy crap, are you superman or something? It sounds awful, and then, to be totally okay after? Yeah, I wish that were me. Mine were pretty normal, so I'd be feeling great if mine had healed like yours.

I recommend drinking sage tea, eases the pain and helps the wound close faster.

Ugh, my sister's came in horizontal too. It took her forever to heal from hers.
I might have to try the sage tea. Can you get it at just the grocery store or something?

Not really from what I hear. I've been told that if you have them, they'll eventually cause problems. Either they'll cause an infection or make all of your other teeth go really crooked. I'm sorry, that's probably not helping very much. :/
Mine didn't even come through, and you could only seem them on the x-ray, but my dentist insisted that they come out now to prevent any problems later. So, I doubt any dentist would really let you keep them in.

I had only one wisdom tooth removed before I went to college. I wanted to be put under during the process because... yeah. So I was lying in the chair and they gave me the gas. I blinked, and asked them when they were going to do it, and they told me it had already been done. My mom got me out of the chair and I kept insisting that we hadn't done anything at all, but they kept saying my tooth was gone. Finally, I told my mom we had to go back during the car ride back, and she handed me a little paper bag that had my wisdom tooth in it. I looked at the tooth for a good five seconds and then said "This isn't necessarily MY tooth."

After that, it was pretty uneventful.
