Everybody's favourite respectful political debate simulator is due out in around one of your human days or so, containing precisely zero lootboxes, mini-buys or sexy shelobs. So already it stands above certain other AAA releases of this season. There is a measly single review available so far though, which is provided in text format below. TL:DR is 9/10 score...like the first, but better.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus does not seem a game from 2017. It's an oddity in an industry that is currently obsessed with open-worlds, micro-transactions, and always online play. It has none of those, and this sequel to 2014's fantastic Wolfenstein: The New Order just sticks to its roots as a first-person shooter.

Wolfenstein 2 begins immediately after the events of previous game in the series. Set in an alternate universe where the Axis forces won the Second World War, you're back in the role of series protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz, and are tasked with setting up a revolution in America, to fight against the Nazi regime that was set up after the dropping of an atomic bomb in Manhattan.

Despite the '2' in its name, you don't need to play Wolfenstein: The New Order to understand what happens here. A cut-scene at the beginning fills you in on the events of the last game well enough. Like the last game, you'll gun down a seemingly endless number of enemy infantry, apart from super soldiers, and giant robots. There's an outrageous set of weapons to use, ranging from triple-barrelled shotguns to flamethrowers spewing fireballs, each of which feels unique in terms of weight, handling, and recoil. They're distinctive, loud, and a treat to use. Most of them are also capable of being dual-wielded, allowing you to wreak twice the havoc. Dual-wielding in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, much like in the previous game, isn't restricted to two weapons of the same type either, making it possible to use a shotgun in one hand, and a submachine gun in the other.

The core gameplay in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus will feel familiar to anyone who played Wolfenstein: The New Order. The shooting is satisfying, with human enemies exploding into puddles of blood, while exotic weapons like lasers simply melt through the opposition, both human and robotic. There's a welcome attention to detail with bigger, ironclad foes losing parts of their armour as you rain down a hailstorm of bullets on them.

Some new weapons, such as the diesel-powered grenade launcher, are a treat to use and the star of the show has to be the humble hatchet. It's much easier and faster - as well as visually gratifying - to chop down Nazis by lopping off limbs before severing off the head. These axe attacks are, indeed, the star of the show.

But developer MachineGames wasn't satisfied with leaving things as they were. As you play Wolfenstein 2, you'll realise that you have options at your disposal that open up new traversal and killing methods in a level. Early on, you'll slam down on grates to get to an objective, and later you can slam into sheets of metal to open new pathways. You can use stilts to get to vantage points if you choose to, and these abilities complement the gunplay well. Aside from opening up new pathways, ramming into the game's heavy armoured Supersoldaten stuns them for long enough to hit them with a barrage of shotgun shells, for a quick yet fulfilling kill. With the use of your various abilities, the levels really open up to you. Be it taking down an entire squad of Nazis on a rocket train, riding a fire breathing mech through the streets of New Orleans, or exploring the nuclear ruins of Manhattan, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus never ceases to amaze in its scope, scale, or opportunity to raise hell in the way you choose.

But perhaps the biggest reason to keep playing Wolfenstein 2 is its story. There are plenty of twists and turns in addition to a host of moments that make slicing and dicing computer generated Nazis seem like the most peaceful thing in the world. Without spoiling much, we can safely say this is one game that deserves its 18+ rating. By the end of it, it's easy to feel Blazkowicz is more human than most of the game's cast, instead of being just your average video game killing machine. He's backed up with a host of colourful characters including Super Spesh, a one time lawyer now conspiracy theorist; Grace Walker, a US resistance leader; and of course the crew of the first game - Bombate and Set Roth to name a few.

The voice actors are tremendous across the board, though the game's antagonist, Frau Engel voiced by Nina Franoszek stands out, making the role of the psychotic Nazi leader come to life with a sense of aplomb akin to Vass from Far Cry 3 or Visari from Killzone 2.

We had only a few concerns with Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. It's a great looking game, standing right next to Id's Doom with some of the best visuals we've seen so far this generation, but it would be nice to have some options - like choosing between frame rate and resolution, or simply giving users an HDR toggle. PS4 Pro and prospective Xbox One X owners would like to see if there are any tangible benefits to playing it on a souped up console rather than just having the box or the game's digital store page simply saying it's "enhanced" for either console iteration. Sure, most games don't have these options, but for a game like this, which is a showcase for the hardware you're playing it on, it would be nice. That aside, we noticed slight texture pop-in, wherein details on guns would show up a little slower than usual - hopefully this gets rectified with a patch.

Clocking in at around 15 hours, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is a big, booming shooter with a well-paced plot, slick levels, and great gunplay - package we don't see very often in 2017. October might be a crowded month, but this one game that needs to be experienced.

Pros:

Great story
Amazing voice acting
Gunplay stays fresh
Memorable levels

Cons:

Slight texture pop-in

Rating (out of 10): 9

Any further reviews including your own are all encouraged to share also of course. Is anybody already sold on the game either way or are there reasons not to be?

Shameful edit: Updated scores post-embargo...

Awesome. Can't wait to play it. I had high hopes for The Evil Within 2 but that game disappointed so I hope I will enjoy Wolfenstein more. I have it pre-loaded from PSN all ready to go. :p

The first review went up because it broke embargo which is tomorrow the 26th of October. After review outlets bitched about not getting game copies far enough in advance to review them in time for release, Bethesda gave out Wolf code early and these people broke embargo on it.

Oh for sure. I loved the last game and I'm super looking forward to giving this game a shot.

I didn't play the first one. Didn't really have any interest in it, because when I play shooters, I prefer to be part of a team--like in the old Call of Duty games--and not a one man army. Heard good things about it though.

But this one? I'm picking it up because of all the things you listed, O.P. No lootboxes, no microtransactions, no spitting in the face of beloved lore. And I would like to add that there is no multiplayer either. These guys wanted to make a single player FPS with a story, and damn it all, they did. And I want to support them for doing something that pretty much every other big name company on the planet no longer has the guts to do.

Well the game does have a season pass

Oh good.

Not the breaking of the embargo part, but the review copy part. I really didn't want to boycott this one.

And if that season pass is like BioShock Infinite's, I will buy it. I have no problem with DLC if it's adding to the single player story. If all the DLC that comes out is like that--like Burial at Sea was--I have zero complaints and even welcome it. However, if we're getting horde mode or challenge mode or whatever, then I will pass. And yes, I know Infinite had that as their first DLC too. I didn't buy the Season Pass for that game until Burial at Sea was revealed and almost released.

I will not, of course, be paying for the season pass until I have actually seen what the new DLC will be, and even then I might still not get it because this game might not impress me enough for me to want more. But right now, with everything else for single player games collapsing around us, I will support these guys for standing against the tide and saying, "Not us."

Oh, it's good? Great.

I'm picking up a Switch in the near future, so I might as well buy this for it.

Why not on PC, you ask? Because I no longer trust my gaming laptop to run new games anymore. Even on the lowest settings the goddamn MENU of Doom 2016 had a framerate of about 2 frames per second, and it'll be a little while before I get around to building myself a proper gaming desktop.

It's only about 2 years old too, so I don't understand. My previous laptop kept up for about 5 years.

So can someone explain why critics loved the story of the first?

I thought it was ok but they seemed to love it

Will probably pick up when its cheaper, exactly like what I did for the first one

I had to check the link to see if there was any more to the review but nope. Only Con is ?Slight texture pop-in? huh?

Sounds kinda fanboyish. If it?s overall better than the first though I?ll definitely check it out on a distant Steam sale. TNO?s gunplay felt good and they did a good job fleshing out the lore with different collectibles. It?s too bad the Tech 5 engine was so horribly implemented I couldn?t finish it. Got to a point where it just stopped loading. Go Megatextures. Although I think that was before I doubled my RAM so maybe I?ll reinstall to see if anything changed.

If not then maybe I?ll have a new rig by the time this ones discounted. Sad though when I could play games like Crysis 3 on my old PC with at least some high settings toggled, which not only looked much better but was also was far more dynamic. Oddly enough I could also play The Evil Within smoothly with mix of high and medium settings, and it?s also Tech 5. Guessing they optimized it quite a bit it the meantime.

It also sounds like the production values of shooters are approaching the kind detail that?s long overdue. Stuff like more realistic damage effects on targets goes a long way immersion-wise.

Terrible. I can't believe that's the same lady from the last game.
You mean it terms of aesthetic or the fact she threw grenades.

Oh, come on, like reviews are important anyway, they are really nothing more than ads, every game is great!!! Unless you have some guy on Youtube you really like (which may or may not be able to get a review copy anyway depending on their contacts), there's nothing much to gleam from reviews that you can't get from gameplay footage. It was just an stupid move on Bethesda's part to not give out review copies because reviews are just ads and free marketing that they choose not to take advantage of.

It was just a fun pulpy story with some decent-good characters, any competent writing in a game causes reviewers to gush over it because of the sad state of writing in the industry. Uncharted 4 won narrative of the year, the bar is really low.

I really want to support this game for not indulging in most of the bullshit that industry loves at the moment, like loot boxes and microtransactions. But I really didn't like The New Order, so its unlikely that I'll pick this up.

In terms of her suddenly being this ridiculous, over the top, unladylike character. I liked her before. It's sooo cringey. Trying way too hard.
Well that clip did look a bit like a delivery room when our first was borned and she had cord around her neck and unusual position. By the time it was done everyone in the room were half naked covered in blood splatter and entire floor turned into almost 'ankles deep' puddle of blood.

Don't know this game honestly but she looked pregnant, determined and protective. To me, that's very feminine.
Even if previously she has been depicted as mild lady, giving her character dynamic change like that doesn't seem over the top (granted entire scene is over the top but hey, video games).

Edit.
Oh and props for appranetly no predatory practices despite Bethesda being publisher. It can be done, Bethesda, it can be done.
I might actually buy this, since I opted against purchase of ME:SoW and SPFbW, which I planned to get.
Will have aa closer look. Thanks to the OP!

You don't say. A naked preggo dual-wielding machine guns tearing through a huge mecha dog while soaked in the blood of Nazi's in a haze of explosions and gun fire. It's..fucking metal!

I love it though. Better than the dime-a-dozen edgy grimdark approach that always falls apart due to terrible writing. Here it looks like the developers actually put in some effort and creativity.
