Look up a book called 'Convict Conditioning' by Coach Paul Wade.Stupid title maybe, but the information contained is priceless. All bodyweight exercises.Only 6 major exercises to master, and your encouraged to take your time slowly building up tendon and joint strength before attempting the harder stuff.

Gyms are a rip off.Its a well known fact that the majority of people who join a gym stop going after 3 months. They basically bank on that fact.If every person who joined turned up on the same day there'd be lines for every machine, bench, sauna and vending machine.

Not to mention they hold up muscle bound gym rats who could have only achieved that mass by juicing up on steriods as the pinnacle of fitness.Theres something seriously wrong with that.

Anyway, the only advice I have is work hard, don't be stupid, and consult a trainer if you can afford it.
You don't have to go this far. Ask a friend to help you. If they won't help you, consult the internet. The internet is much more accessible than trying to fit into someone's schedule. The only issue is that you have to rely on you to stay motivated.

Granted, if you can and want to buy a trainer's time, then go for it. Just be flexible, and if you feel like they're going too fast or too slow, don't be afraid to replace them. (And don't fire them because you're lazy. That's bullshit. If you buy the trainer, stick it out. They'll help you stay motivated.)

I exercise at home. I do a military-grade exercise called the Terminator (my friend showed it to me once he was home from bootcamp) and I do pilates.

ok here is my question, do you work out ie.exercise if so do you go to a gym or just do things like push ups and jogging

i for one don't like going to the gym to work out mostly because i would be a beginner there and i CANNOT stand the feeling of anybody looking down on me(not viewing me as an equal)
and partially because i would prefer muscle being built off of function instead of the other way around so i keep to doing push ups sit ups crunches all that at home as well as doing basic jobs without machine assistance like chopping wood and walking instead of driving

any tips or advice are welcome
If you decide to go, go with a friend.

I just do push ups and sit ups one day. The next day I do shadowing boxing. I walk 4.5 miles every day. I would Cut wood but no one will let me cut the tree in the backyard down.
it helps that i have a good few friends that are martial arts/workout nuts so even if i have not read much or asked any pros i still have a good idea on what and how to work different muscle groups just from being in conversations i would personally love to get myself a punching bag first and foremost to build on my striking strength

Depends on how active you are. (tip, get a pedometer and see how much you walk in a day. 10000 steps each day is good, if not you might want to think about joining the gym.)

As for me, thanks to my job I do 15000 to 20000 steps a day. More than enough to keep me healthy.

Tip: No one looks at you at the gym unless you are a girl with big old boobies or doing the awkward leg spreading machine...

ProTip: Just move the weights up by thirty pound to fifty pounds after you are done lifting and leave if there after you are done.

Anyhow, I go to the gym when I can. If not I go running. It's really more efficient for me because I live in fairly urban area so I can't exactly chop wood all the time...

Oh yeah. and go to the gym with a friend!

I go to a Planet Fitness($10 a month, can't beat that). Honestly, they have all the shit you need to get a good workout. And I really don't have to worry about those stupid "no grunting, no dropping weights" rules thats enforced by the pansies in the other PF's, since the employees that work in the PF I go to generally don't give a flying fuck.

Also, lol at feeling "shame" or people "looking down" on you. I consider myself self conscious, but when you're at the gym, you workout at your own damn pace, and don't give a crap what anyone says. And those big jacked dudes? Yeah, most of them are actually cool, and will answer any question you have about working out if you ask them.

its not the looking that even bothers me its the feeling that somebody there could be looking at me thinking whats that loser trying to do here. i know that its an accepting atmosphere and all but i just dont like the feeling of it i just want to get into decent shape so i at least dont look like the gyms token fat guy

also i live on the side of a mountain(plateau) so jogging while effective is not my real forte i do like hiking though and hiking up a mountain gives me a good reason to carry a knife

also our entire rec centre gym and all is just finishing up a huge renovation because the government funded it to help the economy so im hoping to be up to using some of the newer equipment

When I started going to the LA Fitness, I was worried about the same thing. But trust me, nobody looks down on you. At least not from my experience. Don't let that little fear of people stop you from going to the gym because once you get results it feels great.

I usually go down to the gym at least every other day, or whenever I feel like it (haven't felt like it much since I've got this bastarding cold however, can't wait to shift it and get back!). I used to have a huge weight problem (I was a huge weight problem) so I've worked out fanatically since I was sixteen or so.

I think it's natural to be a little nervous about going to the gym. If you feel like you're unfit then the last thing you want is people gawking at you when you're trying to do something about it. But the thing is, nobody is going to even look at you. Most people will be too wrapped up in their own excercise to care about what you're doing.

Also, depending on what gym you're going to, you'll always find at least one meat head grunting loudly with every rep and then slamming their weights on the floor when they're done. I once even caught a guy playing keep-up with a medicine ball, obnoxiously trying to impress one of the female employees with his football skills.

Except it was, y'know, a fucking medicine ball. Those things are too heavy to keep up with a kick. Not that he let that deter him. He just kept dropping it and then trying to carry on anyway, like that's what he had in mind all along. He got so desperate that he actually inadvertantly kicked it in her face as she bent over to pick up a mat. He left after that and everybody in the gym laughed at him, with damn good reason.

Y'see the point I'm trying to get to though right? There's always someone making a load of noise or an ass of themselves. So long as you focus on what you're doing and not what someone else is doing, you'll have no reason to be self conscious. It can be a lot of fun.

However, no matter how good you are at football, leave the medicine ball alone, yeah? If you see a sexy employee of the gym, go up and say hello or do what I usually do and try to cringe into yourself until you don't have to deal with that.

i do a mix of stuff, i used to be in the best shape of my life just playing soccer 4-5 times a week, but now i don't have time so i only play twice a week and then go to the gym or bike places otherwise

the reason why i go to the gym is they have alot better stuff than i have, and once i'm there it motivates me to do stuff because everyone else is there for the same purpose, although it is quite funny to see meatheads with the absolute worst technique get nowhere while i'm doing half the weight but getting twice the muscle from doing stuff the right way.

i would say a healthy balance of cardio and lifting is kicking my butt back into shape, usually i do 3 miles then do my lifting stuff as my body has already worked up a decent sweat.

yeah this, should've quoted you before, you have nothing to be self conscious about with the meathead guy there, he'll be doin reps with 50-60 lb weights and then drop them on the floor like he just conquered the damn world, so OP don't worry about being self conscious there.

I just get enough of a workout in my daily life, between swordplay with my Boyfriend and lifting heavy boxes at work and chasing after my animals all day, I manage to keep my shape quite well. As for you not liking people judging you at the gym, start by just doing things by yourself or practicing more labor intensive hobbies.

I know that feel bro. It was really hard to overcome when I started going to the gym. I might not have if it weren't for the niggling knowledge that I was paying for it anyway (rec center fees for my college). But two things have occurred to me since then:

1. Like visits to IHOP and Wal-Mart, you are never going to be the weirdest, fattest person that's come in that day. Someone will top you by a mile.

2. Most people in the gym are very aware of this feeling and many even have it themselves. They do their best to stay in their little bubble and don't even pay attention to what others are doing/look like. It may seem to be awkward doing curls with a 10lb weight right next to a guy pushing a 35 (I know this from experience), but I can promise you -- they just don't give a fuck. Everyone's got to start somewhere, and even big muscle heads and fitness gurus understand that. Maybe better than anyone.

Just 1 piece of advice: use the machines correctly. If you've never done it, try to watch someone else do it. Read the instructions on the side thoroughly. See if you're using the proper muscles to check if you're getting it. When all else fails, consult the people working at the gym. Nothing looks more ridiculous than someone rocking back and forth on the lat pull down and letting the weights clang against the rack when they're done.

Although, hiking is still pretty good. I wish I lived somewhere where I could hike regularly.

I bike EVERYWHERE.
I live at the top of a hill in my town, which is basically in the middle of a bunch of mountains (if anyone is familiar with BC, you'll know what I mean.)
Anyways, I bike to and from college every day, and pretty much wherever else I need to go. I'm definitely a lot healthier then I was a year or two back, when I constantly relied on my mom for rides. It's really nice, and I can get pretty much anywhere I want in town within 15 minutes.

I've been doing the insanity program for a while now and am glad that I no longer get sore after one of those workouts.

I tend to go to the gym three times a week, go swimming three times a week and teach martial arts three times a week. Of course these things overlap obviously because there are not nine days in a week.

Am I in shape? No, not really. :D
