Hah! They just want to pump up their user numbers for the next year so people who "quit" will still be on the rolls until the end of next year.

This is like the way XM/Sirius bundled a year subscription into the purchase of most new cars a few years ago. That way their "user" numbers were artificially inflated so it looked a lot more popular than it really was.

A friend of mine was telling me about this. The first thing I thought of is, "Is Blizzard in trouble?" Now I know that's not true, but this seems like a lot to give to people who would most likely have already have kept their account anyway.
They have recently lost over half a million subscribers to WoW, does that count as being in trouble?
Good point. Though this doesn't really help them get those subscribers back. I guess its their attempt to keep the subscribers they already have.

I'm doing it solely for the mount. Always wanted a flying horse, but wasn't ever willing to pay for the Sparkle Pony.

Looks like blizzard is trying to prevent people from defecting to SWTOR......its the only reason to comeup with this plan.

Now thats desperation for you...

SWTOR & GW 2 just showed WoW how a modern MMO SHOULD look like. From the first glimpses at MOP (Mists of Pandaria) I'ld say WOW is now utterly done for. They really tried to do something different, but the changes in the talentsystem look DREADFULL from what I can see. Wow Pokemon ? Meh... nice idea, but Guildwars already did that several years ago. Also, how in merry hell do you explain why things on pandaria is even harder then the apocalypse ?

One year in subscription is a darn long time btw. I'ld never commit to a game for that long time.. especially not an mmo that could throw a "balance change" at you that ruins your experience at any point.

Most of us are already billing wow for a year, and are getting freebies out of it. I have no issues with well thought out bribes, sucked me back into it. If you were already billing wow then it's very much a freebie. It's in fact a discount plus freebies.
This. Most of the people I know who got this (including me) are those who would be playing for the next 12 months anyway. For Blizz, a free game (which, don't forget, will also get money in over time) is a small price compared to knowing in advance the minimum revenue they'll have for the following 12 months.

Spend $180 and get a $60 game free?

This is not the meaning of free that I am used to...seems to be more of the "expensive" version of free.

Especially as if you have paid to play on one, but you have to play on another...

What we're actually saying is "If you buy Diablo 3, we'll reduce your Annual WoW fee by a third"

Or, "if you promise to keep paying us, we'll give you a third back in the form of another thing you might like"

Or "We're worried you might stray onto a number of other very highly anticipated titles, so we'd like to offer you a bribe to stay with us"

But not really "free".
Pretty much, but not as bad as it sounds.

My wife just did the offer thing.

All that happens is they give you an agreement where you won't cancel your account for a year. You still pay the same monthly fee.

She wasn't going to cancel it anyway and now she gets a free mount and game out of it.

Too bad she doesn't like the Diablo games and won't be playing it.

As hard as it's going to be for me I guess i'm just going to have to slap it on my PC instead and play it for her.

Works out as a win win for both of us. She wasn't going to cancel her WoW account anyway and she gets a new mount and beta access to the next expansion. I wasn't going to pay for Diablo 3 but now I get it for free.

Win win.

I still think there's something fishy about giving away a $60 game for free to players of another of your games. It's like they don't really care about Diablo 3, and just want to use it as a metaphorical carrot to distract WoW players from converting to Guild Wars 2 or The Old Republic.

Despite all the problems with D3 being online-only, I was still planning on buying it, but after this move, I just feel like they don't really want to make money on this title.
Bliz has done this sort of thing before.

WoW suscribers in South Korea get to play Starcraft 2 for "free" so long as they keep playing WoW.

Apparently that move was a great success, so they're trying something similar on the rest of the world.

A nice deal if you are still interested in playing WoW for another year like some of my friends are going to do anyway.

Just not sure if it's really a great way to win back those fans like me who got burned out on the game after years and years of playing and just can't find a reason to play any more. Don't get me wrong Blizzard made one heck of a game but I just want to explore and battle somewhere different so Diablo 3 and a cool mount aren't much incentive to pay to be bored for a year.

Ha ha, a better incentive might be to offer the old original WoW before all the expansions and things like the Arena system. I kind of miss the simpler more care free days of vanilla WoW when it wasn't all about your gear so epic gear was something rare and wonderful to admire on the few people who could get it but it wasn't the be all end all of the game.

Will you fix your post ? I never said what you quote me on and that is quite offensive to do...

You mentioned players beeing bribed into playing D3... while i have no problem with the RMT-auctionhouses as I will ignore them and set diablos minions upon them if I ever get the chance, yes - thats exactly the goal here.
Get people who have been conditioned to enjoy grinding and clicking into a situation where they can spend spend spend and spend again all day long.

I'm seeing an ethical problem in there...

Or,
Continue to keep paying for a year, something you'd probably already would do, and as a bonus you'd get Diablo 3 for free, A chance for the beta, and a mount on every character you have and will ever make.

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad thing.

Just that it's got that little demon to sit on your shoulder and ward you away from games that you might have tried, just before a LOT of really good games are about to come out.

Oh, don't worry,
I'll still get Batman, Saints Row 3, Zelda, Ultimate MvC 3, Battlefield 3, oh yeah, and the lovely jewel called Skyrim.
I play WoW casually enough to be able to play other games at the side :D

But if you'd had to have bought Diablo 3...suddenly there's that doubt over continuing with paying for WoW...

Blizzard know how to make money.

While I usually worshpip everything blizzard touches, I am not planning to pay this much. I recently bought one month of game time, and I have to say I'm not enjoying WoW as much as I used to, and I'm not as thrilled about the panda expansion (which I will be forced to buy later in the twelve months) as the others. I will, however, buy D3 Collector's Edition.

Off-topic: I heard D3 Collector's Edition will give a few months of WoW game time, but who would play WoW when you just got D3??

True, but if you pay for something, you got to feel like you get something out of it.

The number of hours is up to the individual paying and will be different from person to person, but the more money you put in for something, the better the results. And $15 a month is quite a lot for a teen.

(unless, I guess if their parents are paying for it...)
