It's been a while since I got one, going on 2-3 years I think. I guess that means I browse my porn at secure sites. But then again, I don't use a anti-virus software so I wouldn't know unless it started doing something radical.

Worst virus I've had though... Probably the one that made some sort of system32 warning pop up when you were playing a game. Not sure if that's a virus though, never did anything other than those warnings, which didn't interrupt the game. You just had to close 200 or so of those warning windows when you finnished playing.

p.p: id it me or hackers and viruses were more active couple of years ago? Or the anti-virus programs are just better now?
I think the time you're thinking of was when computers were first starting to become really mainstream, and companies were deploying them en-masse without really investing in Internet security (like AV's and Internet filters). During that time, a lot of users didn't know that you shouldn't click links in suspicious e-mails or reply to a message from an "administrator" asking for your username and password.

Most people are just a lot more aware of the threat nowadays, and are taking better precautions.

Got one that crashed the whole computer and it wouldn't load up properly afterwards, sent it to the shop and in a week had it back with no data left at all.

Damn near got locked out of my computer by a virus that gets in through by clicking on a link your friend sends you an IM. Not know about the virus, I clicked the link, told my friend, and he went "oh shit, you got a virus." Sure enough, my im started sending my friends links without me knowing. We managed to make an administrator account on which we could use one of our restore dates.

My friend got the oddest I had ever heard of. It streamed British talk radio into his computer, and there was no task or operation he could close. He could only turn of the sound. After about a week a window finally opened.

Meh, I haven't had any bad viruses except for a spyware which didn't work, but self-replicated whenever deleted.

I can't wait for the first Mac OS virus to break out. That would be fun.

Haha, i work at a university in the Audio-visual department.

Somehow, our evening supervisor managed to download some russian super-virus that turned our main booking computer into some kind of server, and it began appropriating the computers of everyone who was on our network and had them doing....SOMETHING... no one ever figured out what it was.. Our IT girl picked up on the whole thing fairly quickly and locked the main booking computer off from the rest of the network. It took her 2 days to rebuild the PC from the ground up.

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and for some iteration of the same virus to develop on one of the computers it was controlling.

My worst was some annoying combined thing (hard to classify) that I had to remove partly manually. It slowed down the PC a bit, gave me some random ad pop-ups, fucked up the Task Manager pretty bad, and rebuilt itself after AV removal.

Other than that I haven't had anything. AVG+ZoneAlarm+Spybot+Opera has worked pretty well for me.

What did you do to it?.....no wait I don't want to know.
What he did to it seems fairly obvious. What I want to know is how the Mac got Herpes in the first place. Dirty little things they are...

Edit: Damn! Double post...

I had something similar to this. It would start up, but it would run real slow, then it would just stop. I had to send it back to the shop and get it replaced, luckily the warranty was still valid.

We had a recent virus outbreak at my work, and it's turning out to be a real pain in the ass.

We nicknamed it the 'Computer AIDS', since it spreads through thumbdrives and it disables your antivirus software.

Yeah, I know. I'm going to Hell for that one.

Anyway, my AV software was up-to-date enough to catch the virus on my home computer, but when it tried to remove the virus it wound up corrupting the registry (don't ask me how) and I had to reinstall windows.

I've had pretty good luck with viruses over the years and this my worst virus story that I can remember, but I know it's nowhere near as bad as some people's virus encounters. So what's your worst virus story, Escapist?

NOTE: To anybody who plans to say something like "I use Linux/Mac, so I don't get viruses! DURR HURR! Blatant ignorance and/or trolling aside, worst virus I've ever had was one which essentially stopped me from connecting to the internet...fun times. other than that just crappy standard ones.

Last count we had about 200 and something viruses. Only reason the computer's still alive is because the buggers are too busy going at each other.

There was the one my mate got where it would randomly download porn and bring up media player. That was not good.
I hope the reason it wasn't good was because it was bestiality (or some other sick practice) , because a 'virus' that downloads porn for you sounds like my kind of disease (lulz, awful pun).

Now now... There's nothing to be afraid of... Remember, this is the Internet. You only need to come to terms with what it really is. Afterwards you will be fine (or completely insane, but let's not dwell on that.) So you just have to start visiting the unmentionable dark corners of the Internet (viewer discretion advised,) and soon nothing will disturb you (or everything.)

That was a very evil virus. It wasn't even made for personal gain *gasp!*, just sadistic pleasure. On the other hand... Maybe it was trying to protect you (see the post and quotes earlier in the post.)

in Win95 my dad sent his PC to get some service (dont remember what for) and a month later a worm (you heard me right, a WORM) started eating the screen, kind of a screen saver, but my dad got locked out of the pc and rebooting did nothing, we didn´t knew english and knew less about computers

so he sent it again to the repair shop, they charged him and sent the pc back

one month later it happened again

it happened in total 3 months in a row, untill my dad got a hold of a computer expert who opened the registry and found a scheduled program to run every month in the same date at the same time, the damn guy he sent the PC first installed it on purpose to have us go back to him every month

weird huh??

also, i managed to get a hold of a virus in a floppy (yeah obsolete stuff) that corrupted all the files in any PC that it got installed, i got it off a friend´s house and installed it in all the computers in my school *diabolic grin*
I read "a virus in a floppy (yeah obsolete stuff) that corrupted all the files in any PC that it got installed" and the first thing I though was to kill my school's computer system with it.

Then I read the last line. lol
