The Black Magician trilogy had a sort of disappointing ending. Not the worst ending ever. But it felt kind of rushed.

After all the build up for the villains, Akkarin just pegs it, the cliche "take my power" scene commences and then Sonea just kills the Ichani. Then that's it. The epilogue gives it a sort of decent ending, but I felt rather cheated with the final battle. Something of an anti-climax.
Yeah I never understood their reluctance to take the power from the arena I can't really see any down sides and it would have allowed them both to survive.Though I suppose it isn't really an ending now because there are new books in the series.

Oh god. I know. I fucking loved Fallout 3, and lost my shit when I realized my level 20 character with 60+ hours put into it was lost forever because my stupid ass saved inside the Project Purity control room.

What has been the most dissapointing ending toa game/book/film to you? For me:

Game: Final Fantasy X-
I like FF games for the story. Everything else is a bonus. Say what you like about it I do not care but I loved X until the end. I like cleché happy endings. Luckly X-2 fixed it. Just a shame the rest of it was shit.

Movie: The Matrix Revolutions.
Neo is Jesus. They should have just ended the movie with Keanu Reeves giving the screen the middle finger and him shouting Fuck you at the viewers.

Book: I cannot think of a book I read that had a bad ending but I hated the ending to the last Codex Alera book, First Lord's Fury for one reason. It was the last in the series. And it was soooo good that I wanted more.

Edit: Fixed spoilers so people will not ***** about me revealing the ending to a 12 year old game and a 10 year old movie.
I can't remember the name of the movie, but that one where there's a rich person that's bored with his life and meets his brother after a long time. His brother tells him to go to a company that will make his life more entertaining. They screw with him the whole movie and in the end he's alright with it. I would have killed someone.

Anime: Kampfer: The 11th episode builds up a cool fight between the big bad and everybody then episode 12 is this weird Christmas episode. What a fucking disappointment, I figured that maybe the next OVA would resolve things but nope it's basically a retread of episode 11.

Hell Girl Cauldron of Three: The big twist is ok but in the end the whole plot is made pointless by the fact that Ai's Successor completely fucks it up and Ai's right back to being the Hell Girl. It was a stupid ending to a season that in all honesty should have not existed.

Games: Wild Arms 1, It's ok except for one thing, Cecilia decides to forsake all her duties of her recovering country to go on adventures with Jack and Rudy. It would be fine except she's had an adventure already and should be helping her ailing country that would benefit from a figure to rally around like a princess who saved the world.

Oh God, where do I start. Does anyone remember game called Pariah? Mother of all shitty cliffhangers. Not that it was particularly interesting to begin with.
Oh god, THAT game... I'm actually on the fence with that one, seeing as how
Mason(you) was the only one that had managed to emotionally connect with Karina (the girl), and his death made her so upset that all her mystical powers finally burst out of her. It makes sense that she would be upset over his death, and her cry of despair made me feel pretty sorry for her.

But then again, I still don't like how the ending was just so... boring. You crash, you die, girl is sad. The end. It was just so anti-climactic.

Now that I think about it, I don't really see the cliffhanger in the ending. I mean the ending is pretty self-explanatory as to what happens to the main character.
Oh dear God I just went back and re-watched that ending.
Because scene fades to black I never realized he actually shot himself. Later on I missed his body on the floor and went straight to that explosion and white screen. Left me wondering WTF just happened. It was a long time ago though.

Turns out it wasn't a cliffhanger. Just poorly executed ending. Thanks :)

The worst ending to a game is easily MGS 4. Whilst Fallout 3 and quite a few others have been worse story-wise at least they don't take 2 hours of desperately boring cutscenes to get it over with.
Drebin gets drunk and depressed, the little girl meets an equally sickening little boy, and then we are treated to something we never ever get to see in MGS which is a massive over an hour long cutscene in which convoluted nonsense plot is divulged to us as slowly as the rotting of a mummified corpse. Thats all I remember and im not about to drag myself through all that again to memorize more so yes I agree with you entirely!

Also two old men fighting, what a climax!

Red Dead Redemption

no, seriously fuck that game

fuck that game for ripping out my heart and stomping on while sadistically yelling at me and telling my all my hopes and dreams are doomed to fail while punhing me in the face and making me cry

fuck that game

It should have ended right after the barn scene. If they had done that it would have been an awesome ending. What made it absolutely hilarious was when the RDR logo flashes on the screen after the last mission. I was just like....seriously?

Game- Uncharted Drake Fortune. Before I start let me say that I love the Uncharted series it is great but:

The ending of the first game was hella bad. It was anti-cilmatic and poorly explained and every character reacted to it poorly. They kind of just shrugged their shoulders and walked away. I am if a giant black swarm of unexplainedness was turning people in to the monsters from I am Legend, I would have SOMETHING I mean ANYTHING to say about it.

As far as book and Movies go I would have to think about it for a while. I don't come across to many of those that I didn't like beginning to end.

Ooh, I just watched Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant.

It was a pretty terrible ending, mostly because it didn't really end. It was like "okay, we're going to set up a franchise now by stopping a battle mid-fight and then walking away." We have to wait for a sequel that (1) won't happen and (2) I don't want to see because the movie itself wasn't worth watching.
Oh sweet mother of god this!!! The thing is it wasn't just a terrible ending, it was a terrible film on the whole, it's like they diden't even read the book i actually walked out of the cinema and demanded a refund.

Highschool of the dead and Mahou sensei negima are decent competitors for the prize.

As for games and movies...
Eh, I can't think of anything.
High School of the Dead is still going on. The Anime might not be renewed for a second season however. And Mahou Sensei Negima the manga JUST ended but yeah I have to say that the ending for it pretty much sucks.
Yeah, I was talking about the ending to the anime of hotd.

As for msn, there are still a couple of chapters to go, isn't there? Unless the raws are out, I guess.
Well, it'll still be pretty much impossible for that ending to redeem itself.
MSN I am pretty sure ends with
Tsuna waking up to find out everyone is dead but her. I am pretty sure that it says thank you for reading at the end of that chapter.

That would be The Game, starring Michael Douglas :)

As for a bad ending, I'd have to point out LA Noire's whole final act.

The game is pretty well built up until that point. After that it just seems rushed.

Neverwinter Nights 2 original campaign

Rocks fall, everyone dies. Literally. Conveyed by a narrator over a bad slideshow, no less.

It was sort of retconned in Mask of the Betrayer, but not enough even then.
I came into this thread specifically to see if anyone had mentioned NW2. Coincidentally I was just telling someone in the office yesterday that never got to play through the game due to a bug that they honestly didn't miss anything by getting to the end of it.

Then Eva appears with Chao Lingshen. Then there's a caption reading
"The long months and years were certainly not a waste!!
Negima will reach its conclusion in three more chapers!!"
So we haven't reached the ending quite yet.

Wizards (1977): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCwgQFOEHC0#t=5m

The picture itself I think is pretty mediocre to say the least.
But what really tipped me off was this anti climax showdown. It is probably meant as some kind of irony joke since his brother is the evil technocrat but honestly I think it is lame.
Not to mention at the very end Avatar gets Elinore which makes hardly any sense as the movie never bothered to establish a relationship of that sort between these two characters.

No one mentioned the ending to Lost yet?

Really any series could end that way, but it's almost as bad as it was all a dream ending. Besides that most things that really mattered like all about the island was answered in a rushed or disappointing way. In the end it showed that the ending wasn't really planned in advance at all.

GTA Liberty city stories. I don't think anyone minds if I spoil it, after saving your bosses life a couple of times and risking yours several, he pays you half of what he said he would, gives you a palm in the back and tells you not to be greedy.

I fail to see where only a happy ending can be a good ending. It doesn't need to be sunshine and daisies to be satisfactory. It was a gritty ending grounded in reality. It was never trying to make you feel good. Try telling a fan of Oldboy that the ending sucked, see what kind of look you'll get.

Not to mention it was pretty much the same ending as a the book.
I didn't say happy. I said satisfactory. You can have a sad ending that still satisfies the audience. You can have a happy ending that leaves the audience feeling unsatisfied.

I never saw Oldboy. I'm talking about this movie, not once did I mention Oldboy.

Now, following the book, that's fine, whatever. Maybe the book presented it better. I don't know. But I'm not talking about that either, so that also doesn't matter.
Than I'm confused as to why it seems unappealing to you. I guess if you were bummed out about it's presentation, that's understandable, but the way it did present the ending was why it was so haunting to me. The cinematography, the closing dialogue, the way they left the wife's death a cliffhanger. It was all so straightforward with no restrictions. It was vicious. It was evil. It was unsettling. Hell, it even explained the title in the closing monologue.

By the way you're leading it on, I can only see a "satisfying" ending to you as being the good guys win. It would have been acceptable, but without the main character dying, there wouldn't have been that message and overall theme of the darkness of man to close it out. In a way, the story would have meant nothing without it. Just another action movie.

And I'm aware you never mentioned Oldboy. I was merely using that as an example, as they are sort of related here.

I'm just going to sound off that for the most part the ending of Oldboy was pretty damn terrible. Not in a "this is depressing" way but more "really that was the villains plot and motive? REALLY?"

No Country for old men just didn't ever tie Tommy Lee Jones into the active plot enough to make his presence even make sense and killing the effective protagonist off screen took every bit of investment out of it. Effective as a statement about how violent lives don't necessarily end in interesting or cinematic ways maybe. Compelling cinema in and of it's self not even a little bit.

It just comes off as the main plot thread getting suddenly dropped and then a pointless side character having a revelation that adds very little. Might give the book a try though if it does tie it all together better.

The Dreamers series by David Eddings

The dreamers of the title are gods.At the end of the fourth book they suddenly decide "hey how about if we use our godly powers to make it so none of this bad stuff ever happened in the first place" and that's exactly what they do

Are you fucking kidding me?I read 4 books to be greeted by that shit
