Worst game sequel

Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. Up until that point, 3D Sonic had been pretty good. Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and (To a lesser extent) Sonic Heroes were all enjoyable. Then Sonic 06 came out as quite possibly the most incomplete game ever released at full retail, and the name of 3D Sonic has been cursed ever since. Luckily, Sonic Unleashed came out two years later and was great, (Yes, it's great. IGN be damned) but it's still hard to get over how terrible it truly was. What's even more terrifying is the fact that I got all the achievements for it. I'm still not sure why.

Honorable mentions:

Star Wars: TFU 2 (A step back from the first game in every concievable way)
Halo 3 (Bland, repetitive campaign and unbalanced multiplayer)
Perfect Dark Zero (The game just plain sucks)

Any Crash Bandicoot game after Crash Bash. This goes double for the racing games.
Oh snap :p

For me worst sequel to a game has to be...Shadow Hearts: From the New World.

I can't think of one, but if I must pick one, I'll say Unreal Tournament 3. I'm not that afraid of change when it comes to games, and almost always prefer the sequels.

Oh right, just like in the previous thread like this, I forgot all about Dawn Of War II. That's a load of crap, after Dawn Of War.

I was recently told by another student in my dorm that pokemon games arent "true sequels" because they are never the same zone and im having a tough time to argue that point while yes they arent in the same area but you couldnt establish some of the evolution without prior exsistance of the earlier games.

I'm not one to jump onto bandwagons, but having finished Dragon Age 2 about an hour ago I have to say it was the worst gaming experience I've had for years. Sure, Origins had it's flaws and to be honest I've never really liked the gameplay, but still it managed to keep me interested for well over 50 hours. DA2 not only failed to keep me interested, it actually made me feel more and more unentertained and at certain points (Anders, I'm looking at you) just outright annoyed.
I could say something about you playing through a game that you say is the worst gaming experience in years, don't like it, annoying, not entertaining, not interesting...

How consistent. But nah, I'm not going to say anything.

Ultima 9. It was supposed to be the capstone of the greatest RPG series of all time, instead it was a buggy, awful mess.

I still haven't forgiven EA for that one.

Dragon Age II springs to mind, I haven't played either but apparently people won't stop going on about it.

In all seriousness Alundra 2 was awful compared to the first.

DMC2 was pretty fucking horrible, as was Munch's Oddysee.

A more recent example is MGS4.

Every Silent Hill game after The Room. Even The Room itself is debatable.

(Thanks, Tommy Wisseau, for making me think of something completely different every time I try to talk about the Silent Hill series.)

Although I may have to agree with Other M.

I wouldn't say it is the worst, but Crackdown 2 comes to mind for least changed. It is set in the same city with basically the same things you were doing in the first, only now there are sometimes zombies in it.

I have to say worst I have played recently is Lost Planet 2, such a let down as the first one was a pretty decent game.

Fable II and III

Fable (and fable tlc) is a brilliant game and then they took the foundations of what could have been a fantastic gaming series and fucked it right royally up!

Oblivion, which was an endless slog through template-built locations with no plot or characters. Plus a broken leveling system and scaling.

Hell, if it had been pretentious and written by Belgians it would probably qualify as a high-brow art game.

MGS2 was great until the plot, one of the worst in video gaming, caught up with the gameplay.

And while I haven't played it myself, I hear Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is considered a war crime in some parts of the world.

Oh god, forgot about DMC2. The series should never have been taken away from Kamiya, but at least the other sequels had the courtesy to be decent.

I'm also going to pre-emptively say the DMC reboot will qualify for this thread.

No, no, no! Christ, what is with these comments. It takes more than one flawed game to ruin a fantastic series. I really wish this melodrama would stop.
I get it, it sucked, I know. But one game does not ruin the series that brought us Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, classics. No offence by the by, I understand your rage, I just dislike people taking it so far.

Anyway, on topic, I think the worst I've played was Metal Gear Solid 2, it was likely the worst of Kojima extenuated, still some great elements and Metal Gear Solid 3 made up for that, love that game.

I found Genji: Days of the Blade to be a terrible sequel... I really enjoyed the First one and I was excited for the second game... Boy was I disappointed. The combat was okay with it's switching the characters on the fly but rest was pretty bleh imo. Crab Battle, anyone?

Oooohhhhh...

Perfect Dark Zero, also known as the 'hey, let's ignore the entire plot of the first one and use the names in an entirely half baked product we've been forced to make because the contract says so but we have no idea what to do because all the head creative staff have left and we don't really care,' game.
The depth and attention to detail in Perfect Dark was staggering, it's still a big game now. The lack of any kind of attention in Zero was equally staggering, so staggering it emphatically killed of Perfect Dark as a potential series and any inkling of Rare still being a relevant developer.

Anything involving Crash Bandicoot or Spyro post Sony buying out the franchises from Naughty Dog and Insomniac respectively.

Oh stop being so melodramatic. Metroid will be fine, just so long as Nintendo hand it to a developer that actually gives a damn about making a Metroid game (hint hint, Retro Studios). One thing's for sure though, they won't be giving it or anything else to Team Ninja for a while...

I agree. Resident Evil has always been an inconsistent series but the quality from 4 to 5 dropped like a bag of cement.
