How about not pussyfooting around and just spam yourself items like a person? I unashamedly use TooManyItems when I play. I've got better things to do than turn balf the map inside-out finding resources. Like building things.
Classic mode, try that.

Yeah it's cheating, but it's your game. Play it how you wish.

Minecraft is one of those games where if you're cheating no one will care unless it gets in their way.

As it is I'm doing everything manually because I like suffering for my fun dammit!

Apart from getting your stuff back from the Nether glitch, yes, you are cheating.
I will usually get about 2-3 stacks of cobblestone or more before I get so much as a single diamond.
Wouldn't mining 37 stacks of cobble be quicker than 1 stack of obsidian?
In all fairness, though, if this helps you enjoy the game, then who even cares? It's not like you're ruining it for anyone or even yourself if you do it 'fairly', go for it! =D

I would say it's cheating, but nobody really cares.
To me you're just removing half of the game by giving yourself items.

I still get a little bit excited when I find a vein of diamond or obsidian after hours of searching, I wouldn't want to just spawn the stuff myself, unless I wanted to build something huge out of diamond or something.

I could be wrong, its been a while since I last played, but I thought you couldn't mine diamond with stone tools. Shouldn't you be trading iron in for your diamonds?

As for cheating... its your game, however you choose to play it is fine. Some people love the scavenging to get everything they need, some just want to build. Do what you feel is the most fun. That's the whole point of the game after all, isn't it?
