Would You Pay to Twitter?

Twitter's [http://twitter.com/] co-founders are considering ways to generate revenue with the popular online messaging service, including the possibility of charging for some premium services.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference [http://allthingsd.com/d/], Twitter co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone said they will eventually begin charging fees for the company's services. "There will be a moment when you can fill out a form or something and give us money," Williams said. "We're working on it right now."

The pair didn't elaborate on which parts of Twitter might eventually require payment, although they suggested a service that would authenticate senders as a a possible revenue generator, citing as an example Dunkin' Donuts [http://www.dunkindonuts.com/] paying to ensure that nobody sends tweets using its name. Banner ads are also a possibility, although Williams sounded rather cool toward the idea, saying, "I think it's probably the least interesting thing we could do."

But as many popular online services have found, transitioning from a free service to any form of pay-to-use model is a huge challenge. Williams said that while they're hopeful to be generating revenues by the end of the year, the priority is to build a "long-term, sustainable business."

"There's a key difference between value and profit and we need to build value first," Stone said in a brief follow-up interview with the Wall Street Journal [http://online.wsj.com/video/twitter-founders-intend-to-generate-revenue-by-year-end/E269D477-780F-4594-89B4-49A1464CF06B.html], adding that growing the network, making it robust and adding features that users want are among the company's priorities.

"That being said, we do want to focus on generating some revenue by the end of the year to show people that Twitter is here to stay," he continued. "The goal is to begin iterating, to start showing signs of life in that respect."

With virtually every other source of online communication available free, the odds of Twitter charging for individual use are virtually zero. The real question seems to be whether it can add enough "value," and stay sufficiently relevant, to generate income in other ways. Not an insurmountable task, perhaps, but as ICQ [http://www.icq.com] found out, certainly not an easy one either.

Twatter would have to pay ME to make me go anywhere near it.

Edit - Why do Escapist staff like it anyway?

I always thought Twitter was a lazy form of blogging. Just get an LJ or whatever, people, honestly.

That said, I follow the hell out of Misha Collins' twitter. He just escaped Guantanamo Bay with 250 lbs of gasoline, a catapult, a bandaid, and some raybans.

I don't see Twitter as useful or fun at all... It's extremely narcissistic(and narcissists are jerks). And I'm not one of those people who reads too much into stuff - I just don't like Twitter. So if they starting charging, I'm pretty sure only the peer pressure of "I must belong!" would keep anyone. Sadly, there are many millions of people who would actually succumb to that.

And if you use Twitter for your own fun, good for you!

I use twitter to talk to friends (SKY SKY SKY SKY SKY SKY SKY SKY, KIM KIM KIM KIM KIM) but I wouldn't pay for it. I'm sure I could find some other way to talk to them like Skype or MSN.

Once something like this begins charging, another site will pop up behind it and eventually most of its fan-base will transfer to that. Sites like this and social-networking sites always seem to sell out and shrink. Just look at Friends Reunited or Myspace. Although I don't blame 'em. You would want to earn some decent money for your creation.

Well, I find that texting is superior to tweeting in every way, I get 20 extra charecters, I get to not let everyone else see what I say, and I get an assurance that the other person sees what I'm saying.

So would I pay to tweet, hell no, I still don't understand why anyone but congressmen trying to look hip do it.

I don't Twitter when it's free, so of course I'll do it when I have to pay ;)

[/sarcasm]

Really though, why can't they just be happy with getting revenue from advertising? It's not like that's a tough market to exploit, especially with celebrities 'Twittering' away all day now...

Nope. If it's free at rollout, making it into a pay service down the line would kill it. They'd have to shutdown and restart from scratch if they wanted to start charging.

I woke up from the haze of growing up in the 80s and 90s to discover this so called "twitter" thing and found out that all the kids these days were "tweeting." After discovering that it was not in fact slang for a new street drug, I lost all interest in the subject.

Seriously though, I hope they charge for it, and that then no one will use it, SO I NEVER HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT SUCH A STUPID THING EVER AGAIN.

I don't even use it when its free, hell they would have to pay me to use it, and it would have to be a lot.

Although, if they do start charging for it, all the people who are using it "just to fit it" which is like what, 90%, will leave and twitter will die.
