Would You Pay to Twitter?

Ad banners won't do much for them because the most dedicated Twitter users don't visit the Twitter site instead opting to use SMS, RSS, or some dedicated app to keep tabs on it. You could put them into the RSS for feed aggregators, but you couldn't send them through SMS and apps that do more than just blindly slurp the RSS are going to remove advertising. That pretty much leaves charging for some kind of service as their only option for making money. I think they might have something if they could convince the corporations that are essentially getting free advertising to pay for something, but I think even that is going to be an uphill battle.

And yes, I do use Twitter. Or at least, I have an account. I follow a few friends and coworkers and almost never post anything. I wouldn't keep using it if I had to pay for it.

I wouldn't twit ("to twitter") if i was paid to. Maybe if people get turned off twitter then the local free paper will stop going there for news articles.

Well the escapist has an interesting demographic... lots of people who don't get the need for constant social updates. I'm one of them as well. I can never see the point on facebook, twitter, bebo or the countless other sites. Still, it's not everyone's poison... My wife loves facebook but all I can see is a load of meaningless gibberish and vacuous 'which is your favourite emergency crash position' quizzes..

As a position of sanity though they've not mentioned charging for the core service. They're discussing premium services. Charging for the core service would be commercial suicide

As for why they need to charge? There's a whole load of investors who have been demanding a business plan off these jokers for the past year - they need to start making money or they'll cash in and leave. These services aren't free to maintain no matter how small...

Me, I'll stick with teamspeak, steam friends and the good old fashioned 'can you get us a coffee luv?' shouting down the stairs for my social networking :p
