Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

Yes I would, I don't have anything against gay people in real-life, why should I in polygons?

(I prefer them to straight people frankly, at least gays don't make out by groping each other at the Metro and open their eyes slightly, looking around, as if to say "Hey look at me, I'm Rad". Christ, what a bunch of tossers.)

But anyways, yep, I would. Although if it's open world, then I still should be able to project my own persona (I'm straight, so I wouldn't be too excited in controlling a mute character a la DA and have only gay options as a MUST, I should have the options of decline also), but at the same time, if the game is a linear game, with a voiced character, then yeah, making a genuine character out of the deal wouldn't be any different then making a genuine character out of a straight guy.

Yeah I'd be all over that shiz with any game (so long as it isn't an RTS or JRPG...really can't stand those)...it would show the industry moving forward (unless done offensively, then I would not be on that shiz). I like playing games where the protagonist is a girl (mirror's edge anyone?) so why should it matter if I'm playing a homosexual?

Well as long as there isn't cutscenes where he is shoving his tongue down other guys throats, then yes I would probably play it.

Sure, of course i would. Be it male or female. But the story has to be good, otherwise, it's not gonna work for me.

My characters in Fallout 3 and NV are lesbians, at first I was doing it to disappoint daddy for leaving me alone in Vault 101, but I carried it over to NV just because I liked my old character from F3 and wanted to carry on playing as her. I tried to make them look as similar as possible, right down to their skill sets. I just imagine that the bullet to the head is what made her lose all the levels and skills I gained in F3 which is why she's got to re-learn how to lock pick and sneak around.

But yeah, if the game had a gay protagonist I wouldn't care all that much as long as they didn't focus on it too much. I don't want the character to be one-dimensional and have their sexuality be the only thing about them. I wouldn't care if you're gay, straight, male, female or none of the above, if you're going to be a boring character which only has a single personality trait then you're a boring character and I just don't like that.

Unless you're Duke Nukem, in which case it's kind of the point that he's one-dimensional, it would feel clunky if someone tried to crowbar in some kind of depth to him for no reason.

It depends really. If we're talking about a very feminine, over exaggerated persona than no, because most likely I wouldn't enjoy it. Although playing as someone similar to Freddie Mercury would be AMAZING. But I suppose what it all comes down to is the strength of character, in both ways. A weak character sometimes might not as well be there, in which case does it matter? On the other hand, if its a strong character well hey it should be fun and interesting. It's only if the character is just strong enough to be noticed, but pretty terrible that you'd really care.

Does not matter if the protagonist was gay. Does matter if he/she is an unlikable twat with no redeeming value, highly stereotypical to the point of offensive, or if the gameplay was generally shit.

Well let's see, Kingdom Hearts is already heavy on the bromance so I don't think the full transition would really bother me.

I'd barely notice in Halo, since we rarely see any romantic interaction between characters.

That leaves GTA3: San Andreas that might be a little different, but as long as I wasn't forced to pursue a relationship I might play it to.

sure i would as i don't see that stopping my ability to curb stomp bitches, i think it would be interesting if they made a main character of CoD gay just to see the reaction of all the little thirteen year olds.

I bet you already have and didn't know it :)

What, am I saying that gay people are the same as everyone else? Controversy!

Why does sexuality have to factor in at all? I have no idea of Alcatraz's (Crysis 2) sexual preferences, and if it got pencilled in, it would just be irrelevant and out of place either way.

Of course, so long as there's a reason for the character to be gay. Like, if they just say the character's gay and then never bring it up again and don't include that in the story, then it's pointless.

this really comes down to how well they define the character. if their main defineing point is their just gay would make a very flat and unlikeable charater to the mass public. to put in short yes i would play the game as the as the character is well rounded

I would play a game that had a gay lead, male or female, I'm even more likely to play one with a main character who's a transperson.

Yes. However, he has to be a white dude and he has to have brown hair. We can only take so much innovation at a time.

...how gay are we talking? Like, "Hi, I like to have relations with people who have the same love-gear as me in my spare time, but other than that, I'm just like you. We should hang out, and while we don't have sexuality in common, I'm sure that there's plenty that we do have in common."

Or are we talking the spastic, arm-flailing, weeping, "OH EM GEE guys! Jeremy hasn't called me back for, like, 14 hours! Who the hell does he think he is? I bet he's out with some slut from work! I should've known. He never tells me how he feels about me, and I totally caught him trying to pick up another guy at the bar the other night, but I wasn't going to let that happen, so I made sure to follow him there. As soon as I found out what he was doing, I made sure to announce my arrival in the most gauche and grating was possible. By the way, those shoes looks really stupid with that shirt, and those pants don't look very good on you. Blah blah blah blah blah, etc."

The former? Sure. The latter? Fuck no. I'd rather drill my skull out.

If you find the second paragraph to be offensive or in bad taste, oh well. This was an actual conversation that I heard when I was working at a gay bar in downtown Denver. You don't need to go off the handle telling me that I stereotype homosexuals. I understand that not all homosexuals talk like that. You, however, understand that a shitload of them do.
