Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

I wouldn't care aslong as he wasn't prancing around in leather thongs calling everything fabulous. Or to put that differently, aslong as he is a believable character which also happend to be gay, not some kind of flaming avatar of gayness. but I would probably make that argument for any aspect of a character.

Even in a heavily story-driven game or RPG ... hell even an FPS in which he/she is talking all of the time about being that orientation, I wouldn't care. In fact it would change things up and inform the current gamers of the GLBT struggles.

I'm saying informative, not bash you over the head with it... That could just become annoying.

Yeah, I made my Fallout:NV character gay, though admittedly, more so because it's more effective to flirt with guys then girls, because there are more Male NPCS. I didn't have a problem with it at all though, and I just laughed when my friend started making jokes about it.

Yes, as long as it wasn't the one characteristic that defines him/her, they'd need a good background and personality (Which for the record with a requirement of mine for all characters gay/straight). For example if it's a hardbitten and cynical private eye in a noir science fiction future who investigates crimes in Old New York and lives his male life partner who is a bi-polar painter in a run-down loft, with a clunky robot butler. That game I'd play.
Slightly off topic: If you'd really like that example, you should watch the movie "Killer Condom" from Troma studios. It has almost that exact premise including a gay protagonist and although it's a bit of a parody and not having a big budget, it's was one of the best movies I've seen.

I wouldn't play Duke Nukem if he was gay. It defeats the purpose of a proudly misogynistic protagonist.
Duke Nukem had to have been gay. No one not DEEP in the closet could have overcompensated that much.
Exactly.

I feel like gay men would actually fit so much more perfectly in any game with overly macho characters. It would sure explain why they are so fucking obsessed with masculinity.

Uh... I fail to see how this would have any bearing on the game.

I mean, why even mention he's gay unless you're going to make a sexual scene or appeal to stereotypes.

The game comes first and foremost. In some situations it really wouldnt matter. An atypical brown and bloom filled shooter, it wouldnt make a difference because it has zero impact on the mechanics and the narrative in most shooters is so small that it would barely have enough room to be expounded upon in a 7 hour game. (besides who plays shooters for the story?)

Now a more narrative driven game like an RPG, that Im a little more on the fence about. Then it depends how it is done. If its a non bioware game where sexuallity is seldom an issue in the first place, and your not constantly being beaten over the head with it, then as far as I am concerned, its fine. Now if its something that keeps coming up over and over and over again, then no. It would become entirely too distracting and end up disolving the narrative down to that facet of this virtual persons existence.

Arguably this can already occur. Fable is the perfect example. You are free to screw whatever you like in fable From begining to end if you want your char to be gay, its gay. Thing of it is, games are extremely progressive when it comes to this subject. You see more liberal and tolerant views when it comes to homosexuallity in games. Almost to the point of being too progressive, Or being progressive just for the sake of being progressive. If you look at games being representative of our culture, then already the attention homosexuallity gets in games is either right on par or even just a little bit over considering that homosexuallity makes up roughly 10-20% of the global population. You look at the level of games where homosexuallity is touched apon and it prolly hovers at a similar percentage.

Cant think of one game in particular, but it wouldnt bother me... actually, part of me thinks it would be funny to see my protagonist hitting on the antagonist... IDK why...

Well, yeah. I'd probably be more likely to play a game with a gay protagonist, to be honest.

It's just more interesting, and it wouldn't give me any trouble with immersion. In video games I'm practically pansexual for reasons that continue to elude me.

[sub]Not to mention the fact that I'm also not a space marine or a witch with shotguns on her legs.[/sub]

No, I don't need to know the sexuality of the character because it really shouldn't come into play unless I choose so. Forcing any relationship on the player is just stupid. Forcing one differing from my sexual preferences is just alienating.

I certainly would. Games are not meant to mirror my experiences: I don't have any cause to carry a gun, explore underwater dystopias or liberate post-nuclear wastelands in my daily activities. I play games for (among other things) escapism and to experience (albeit in a limited fashion) other points of view.

It may not be openly acknowledged, but chances are we have all played "gay characters" in games:

According to one report, 13-15% of the population of San Francisco is gay, so if you've played Homefront, you might have played a gay character.

Homosocial activities aside, if you've played madden (or ncaa football) chances are you've played/controlled a gay character. While I've never heard about any "outted" players, if the estimated percentage of americans who are gay is 2-3%, odds are very good that 50 of the 1696 players are gay. That number does not consider the additional eight players on nfl practice squads. I have no idea how many players there are on ncaa teams, but I imagine that it is more than the nfl allows.

I don't really care as long as I don't have to act out any sex scenes. I would feel a little uncomfortable even if the character was heterosexual in a sex scene. Mainly because I'm afraid someone may walk in the room when I'm playing and see it. Awkward.

I'd go with probably. Personally I prefer protagonists with no real predetermined sexuality, as it allows the player to project their own sexuality onto the character, I'd say this is one of the things Mass Effect series (and I've heard Dragon Age as well, but I can't admit to ever having tried that) does well.

That said, something like Duke 3D, I'd probably find pretty unnerving, but I think it'd be the same case if Duke was a heterosexual woman as well...
