Historians are saying nowadays they weren't slaves.

Dunno if that means whips weren't involved, tho.
I read the same thing. According to a documentary I watched it was mostly built by contractors who lived in tilt-up villages. It sounds a hell of a lot like work-camps in modern times, where you go live at camp for 3 weeks working then come home for a week.

Accepting that they were salaried career tradesmen I assume whips were reserved for the ones who were 'nasty'.

Probably not, it sounds like not only were the workers on the pyramids well paid, they also had daily allowances of beer and if they died during construction they were buried within the shadow of the pyramid. Considering how they viewed pyramids that is a pretty high honor and an easy path into the afterlife.

Like less than 1% of the ancient aliens/chariot of the gods/ancient astronauts stuff is interesting. But it needs a better host than the guy from the History Channel.

At the very least that suggests it was still built by HUMAN hands
Until you have the thing about the Jews being space lizards.

Anyhoo, IIRC, you had a small permanent work crew at the pyramids, but most people were seasonal, farm labourer types who didn't otherwise have a job when it wasn't planting or harvesting time.

If I squint my brain a bit, it looks like the Ancient Egyptians were building the pyramids as an economic stimulus package to provide employment, and build infrastructure that would bring in revenue long term. In that tourists still go to see them today, they were wildly successful.

Also, why is it always aliens building the pyramids, not doing something else there? For many, many years they were the tallest buildings on the planet, brought in visitors from all over. If you were an alien visiting Earth 3,000 years ago, what would you go see?

Actually, now that I think of it, given that several human cultures independently built pyramids, perhaps pyramids appeal to humans, or perhaps pyramids are a good way of building that sort of thing. If it's the latter, that might apply to aliens, who will then make bad TV shows about how Ancient Egyptians built theirs.

No comment on the aliens thing, but pyramid shapes are really great ways to build vertically when dealing with masonry because in order to go high you need to spread the weight out over a wider and wider base. You can see that in buildings of the recent past as well - if you go find a masonry tower structure and look at the very bottom levels you'll find extremely thin restrictive hallways despite the impressive girth of the structure. That's because you're walking through what is effectively tunnels cut into a big block of solid stone and mortar that is being used to spread out the weight of the building above.

Ancient Aliens is one of my favourite hatewatches. While I'm conscious that it actually does a lot of harm to people and to scientific literacy, it's also very funny.

This.

There's probably also some preservation bias. A lot of ancient cultures built towers too. It's just that the towers fell down and the pyramids didn't.

What always got me the most was the assertion that it should have been impossible to build pyramids because they were too big and impressive, and how could they lift the blocks without cranes? In spite of the fact that pyramids are basically very fancy inclined planes - ie, the thing you build when you want to raise something up without having to lift it. If a person can think up the idea of a pyramid, they can conceive of half a pyramid with a lower slope to make it with. Made worse by the fact that they DID have cranes, it just makes more sense to use a ramp since its easier and doesn't really require maintenance.
Fun fact: Herodutus has a small section about Egypt in his book The Histories.

Do you know what it says about the Pyramids? They used construction equipment.

Yep. That goddamn simple. While not a primary source, he also didn't try to find any bizarre explanations to "How could these people have built these stone structures wider at the base then at the top?".

Yes well, these are the same people who are baffled at the idea of a perfect circle being made in a field of crop circles, declaring humans can't do something that precise....and two old dudes with a piece of rope and a wooden plank, demonstrated how a fucking PROTRACTOR works. But hey, beyond human capability...sure.

Not to mention, the people who started the crop circle thing keep telling everyone they did it.

I like to think that every day people send them links to the space lizard crop circle stuff and they have to pretend they think it's funny.

I see no way this isn't exactly what happens. Though given the age of those guys back when I first saw a show about them doing it, which was like 15 years ago, they are probably dead, or so old they aren't really hitting up social media.

Ancient aliens is a guilty pleasure, I must confess. I don't believe a single word of it, I do believe aliens exist somewhere but they've not only never been to Earth, they've never been close and my personal answer to the Great Filter is intelligence. Its Starship Troopers and Aliens all the way down out there.
But the idea a crazy haired Doctor of Sports Medicine(Yeah that's his degree) can look at a cave drawing of someone pointing at clouds and be like "Could it be that clouds are actually space aliens and they taught humans how to walk and chew gum at the same time?!" is just delightful.
Its like what listening to a Trump should be. A wild crazy loon with bad hair that no one takes seriously talking the most outrageous theories, everyone laughs at them and calls them dumb then shuts the TV off and goes for a walk.

Oh yeah the premise makes for great scifi premises when used well, the "precurser race" cliche, whatever flavor it is. But these people have little to no capacity for skepticism and critical thinking, and just assume it's true because....well I don't really know why, but they do. *shrugs* Idiots gonna idiot all day.

I do like the idea of ancient aliens, its fun and a little heart-warming knowing there's a race of Space Egyptians who truly never got over how cool pyramids look out there that didn't immediately enslave us or eradicate us and take our planet.
But like you said its Halo/40k/Star Trek lore at its core, not an alternative theory to evolution/anthropology.
Its amazing they can be like "Cave paint of clouds = aliens" and then scientists go "Actually some clouds do to low pressure system can form flat bases and round tops to look like saucers and at dawn or dusk if light hits them they can glow making lights in the sky" and then the Ancient Alieners are all "No, aliens."

It's basically a secular religion at this point. A lot of people are looking for easy answers and universal explanations for everything. Aliens give people comfort and they want all their problems to be solved.

I'm aware of the why, it doesn't make it any less stupid. And just like any variation of "invisible people in the sky", it's not good for them, because it leads them to justify crackpot thinking, and take actions based on irrational interpretations of information.

Possible. Even kings in the ancient era knew that bored, unemployed, poor people were high risk for discontent and riots, so giving them something to do was very popular. The fact that a grand building project also left a massive statement of how awesome the king was, even better. If it's a religious building, it makes the king look pious, as well.

Apart from the expense, it's a fantastic tactic.

Even the expense could be spun in their favor, in a sort of "if they have the resources to build a rather useless pile of blocks, imagine how much they have in total?" type thing.
